A Few Notes About Today’s CeremonyWPI confers undergraduate and graduate degrees at separate spring Commencement ceremonies. Master’s and PhD degrees will be presented during this evening’s exercises; bachelor’s degree recipients will receive their diplomas on Saturday morning, May 11.

This graduate Commencement is a reflection of the growing stature of the Institute’s graduate programs, which have expanded substantially—in size, diversity, and international recognition—since WPI awarded its first master’s degrees in 1898 and its first PhD in 1960. Today, more than 850 graduate degrees will be conferred.

Serving as honorary marshal is Yan Wang, William Smith Dean’s Professor of Mechanical Engineering and winner of the 2019 Trustees’ Award for Outstanding Research and Creative Scholarship. The baton he carries is the walking stick of WPI founder John Boynton. The ceremonial marshal is Winston Soboyejo, provost ad interim.

President Leshin wears the Presidential Medallion, with the WPI seal cast in silver and the names and years of service of all 16 presidents engraved on small silver plates that form links in the chain. Provost ad interim Soboyejo carries the Academic Mace, a 42-inch staff made from fluted cherrywood and topped with a circular silver pedestal on which sits a large silver medal with the WPI seal on each side.

Student speaker Doreen Manning completed a Master of Business Administration degree this spring. She earned her BA in English from the University of Massachusetts Boston. She has been involved in creating publications for three decades. Her career arch spans an internship at the Boston Phoenix to her own arts magazine to the WPI Journal, with a few stops in between. This mother of four is also a roller skater, runner, and aficionado of chocolate ice cream.

Processional and Recessional—Graduates begin lining up at 3:30 for the processional, which steps off at 4:30 (the ceremony itself starts at 5:00). Originating at Harrington Auditorium, the processional winds through the campus, crosses Earle Bridge, follows the sidewalk past Alden Memorial, moves onto the walkway behind Bartlett Center, turns at the Proud Goat statue, and proceeds up the center aisle under the tent.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, the marchers move down the center aisle and proceed as a group toward the Sports and Recreation Center. Guests are asked not to block the progress of the processional or recessional. It is especially important to keep the center aisle clear so marchers may make their way to and from their seats.

Auxiliary viewing location: Harrington Auditorium

As the processional begins, members of the faculty, attired in colorful robes and hoods, line both sides of Earle Bridge to pay tribute to the graduates as they cross the bridge before receiving their diplomas.

Photos and Videos—The pictures taken today will be treasured mementos. The following information should help our guests get the shots they want.

Photos during the ceremony: The area in front and to the side of the stage is reserved for official (badged) WPI photographers. Guests are not permitted in this area and may not stand in the aisles or around the stage area during any part of the ceremony (this will be strictly enforced). Please do not stand in the aisles to take photographs as you will block the view of seated guests.

Note: The professional firm Commencement Photos takes a photo from an optimal location near the stage of each graduate receiving a diploma. The company will mail proofs with an order form to graduates or their families. For more information, call the studio at 978-851-5924.

WPI records the entire ceremony from several vantage points. A live stream is available on the WPI Commencement website and the WPI Mobile app (see next section) during the ceremony. A complete, high-quality video of the ceremony will be available for downloading within two weeks at wpi.edu/+Commencement.

Photos after the ceremony: If you’d like to capture your happy graduate following the ceremony, we recommend the following locations:• The Stage Area: after the procession has left the Quadrangle,

guests are invited to take photos on or near the stage (with WPI banner and plantings in background).

Boynton Hall and Washburn ShopsCompleted in 1868, WPI’s first building is named for John Boynton, a prosperous tinware manufacturer who founded the Institute in 1865 with a gift of $100,000. Boynton Hall was one of the first buildings designed by noted architect Stephen Earle and was constructed of granite obtained from local quarries. The building originally housed classrooms and labs, where students learned the theory of science and engineering; they applied that theory next door in the Washburn Shops. The towers of these two buildings now symbolize WPI’s unique philosophy of education, the merger of theory and practice.

• Earle Bridge: Spanning West Street, the footbridge is decorated with flowering plants.

• Boynton Hall: WPI’s first building, with its granite exterior and clock tower, is located just across the footbridge.

• Higgins House: This WPI mansion, located directly behind the Rubin Campus Center, is surrounded by plantings and formal gardens that are in full bloom at this time of year.

Info at Your Fingertips—One of the best ways to get the information and news you’re looking for about Commencement week is to download the WPI Mobile App to your smartphone or tablet. You will find items to help navigate the campus, including campus maps noting dining and auxiliary viewing locations. You may even get a front-row seat to the various ceremonies by watching our live video streams. After Commencement, use the WPI Mobile App to stay connected to all things WPI. The app is available on the iTunes Store and Google Play, or you may download it at wpi.edu/+mobile.

Honorary Degree RecipientKevin O’Sullivan

Doctor of Science

Kevin O’Sullivan once said, “The world is run by those who show up.” Time and again, he has shown up for the City of Worcester, helping it improve the lives of its citizens, invigorate its economy, and stake its claim as a hub of science and engineering innovation. Once called the “godfather of Worcester biomanufacturing,” he recently retired after serving for more than 20 years as president and CEO of Massachusetts Biomedical Initiatives, an economic development organization that supports breakthrough research and commercialization in the life sciences and healthcare.

During his tenure, MBI launched 126 companies, employing more than 800 people and contributing more than $760 million to the local economy. WPI has been a proud partner in that success. Under O’Sullivan’s leadership, MBI helped develop the university’s Gateway Park research and innovation campus, where the organization’s main offices are now located within WPI’s Life Sciences and Bioengineering Center alongside graduate research programs in chemistry and biochemistry, biology and biotechnology, biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, and physics. The synergy between the two institutions has made it possible for hundreds of WPI students and faculty to test their best ideas, forge connections with emerging companies, and bring life-saving discoveries to the marketplace.

In a life distinguished by service to others, O’Sullivan has championed Worcester from Main Street to the halls of the Massachusetts State House. From 1987 to 1994, he represented New England’s second-largest city as a state representative. His legislative achievements included successfully launching UMass Medicine Science Park; gaining funding approval for the Massachusetts Academy of Math and Science at WPI; leading an effort to reform welfare programs; and serving as the first House chairman of the Central Massachusetts Legislative Caucus. He also served on the House Ways and

Means Committee, chaired the Committee on Redistricting, and served as vice chairman of the House Ethics Committee.

In his post-legislative career, he continued to propel Worcester forward, employing his special talents for creating connections among individuals and organizations. He worked as a director for Friendly House, a social services agency

devoted to the city’s low- and moderate-income residents. He has also served as a community liaison for a project known as “This is Worcester.” Before joining MBI, he served as vice president and marketing director for the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce and the City of Worcester.

While helping the biotech industry flourish in Central Massachusetts, O’Sullivan has also taken a personal approach to helping his fellow citizens better their daily lives. He is a member of the Central Massachusetts Housing Alliance and an active supporter of Mass Academy,

Indian Lake Watershed Project, and Walk for the Homeless.Though he did not attend WPI, his passion for making a

difference and his “roll up your sleeves” work ethic makes him a kindred spirit of our university. The schools that can claim this native of South Norwalk, Conn., as an alumnus are Doherty Memorial High School in Worcester; Springfield College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in health, physical education, and recreation with a minor in community leadership development; and Clark University, where he received a master’s in public administration. Among his many awards and recognitions, he has received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Massachusetts Biotechnology Council and was named one of The Power 50 by Worcester Business Journal.

For his transformative impact on Worcester and the surrounding region, his longstanding and robust support for WPI’s students and faculty, and his inspiring example of what it means to “show up” and make this world a better place, WPI is pleased to confer on Kevin O’Sullivan the degree of Doctor of Science, Honoris Causa.

Honorary Degree RecipientFreeman A. Hrabowski III

Doctor of Arts

In a rousing and widely viewed TED talk, Freeman Hrabowski shares the remarkable rise of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, which he has served as president for the past 25 years. With Hrabowski at the helm, UMBC has emerged as a national leader in educating students from underrepresented populations and preparing them to take their place among the very best in science, engineering, and the humanities and arts. The secret to UMBC’s success? Hrabowski credits a shared and unshakeable pursuit of excellence. With a nod to the philosopher Aristotle, he says, “Excellence is never an accident. It is the result of high intention, sincere effort, and intelligent execution.”

By Aristotle’s measure, Hrabowski has provided his students, faculty, nation, and the world with a powerful example of lived excellence. Born in 1950, in a racially divided Birmingham, Alabama, Hrabowski learned his earliest lessons from loving parents, who nurtured his passion for education and encouraged him, always, to “work hard and be resilient.” Unwilling to settle for second-class resources in his classroom or his community, he became a young leader in the Civil Rights Movement. At just 12 years old, he joined the 1963 Children’s March in Birmingham, braving police dogs, fire hoses, and the taunts of those many times his age. He also endured a harrowing week in jail for participating in the peaceful protest.

Shaken but unbowed, he continued to pursue a life of intentional excellence, graduating from Hampton Institute with highest honors in mathematics. He went on to earn an MA in mathematics and a PhD in higher education administration and statistics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. During his long and distinguished career in academia, he has blazed a trail for African Americans and other underrepresented minorities to follow. He counts among his proudest achievements the creation of the Meyerhoff Scholars Program, which he cofounded with philanthropist Robert Meyerhoff. Like Hrabowski himself, the program is leading a national charge to increase diversity among future leaders in science, technology, and engineering.

Now one of the foremost academic leaders of his time, Hrabowski is often called on to advise national agencies—such as the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health—as well as universities and school systems on excellence in math and science education. President Barack Obama named him chair of the President’s Advisory

Commission on Educational Excellence for African Americans. He also chaired the National Academies’ committee that produced the report Expanding Underrepresented Minority Participation: America’s Science and Technology Talent at the Crossroads.

Awards and accolades abound for Freeman Hrabowski. TIME named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world; U.S. News & World Report ranked him among America’s best leaders. He has received the TIAA-CREF Theodore M. Hesburgh Award for Leadership Excellence in Higher Education, the Carnegie

Corporation’s Academic Leadership Award, and the Heinz Award for contributions to improving the human condition. Under Hrabowski’s leadership, UMBC has been recognized as a model for inclusive excellence by such publications as U.S. News, which has also named the campus a national leader in academic innovation and undergraduate teaching for the past eight years.

He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Society. A highly sought-after speaker, he has authored numerous publications. His most recent book, Holding Fast to Dreams: Empowering Youth from the Civil Rights Crusade to STEM Achievement, describes the events and experiences that played a central role in his development as an educator and leader.

For seeking excellence in his own life and inspiring countless young people to do the same, WPI is pleased to honor Freeman A. Hrabowski III—child civil rights activist, distinguished scholar, academic innovator, national leader, role model, and mentor—by conferring on him the degree of Doctor of Arts, Honoris Causa.
