The next few days are supposed to bring some of
the hottest temperatures of the year across the
country. Parts of the west coast are expected to
reach over 110 °F on Thursday while the east coast
reaching the mid to high 90's. When the outdoor
temperature is that high, it is important for people
to remember the dangers associated with it. Here
are the top five things to remember when
temperatures are approaching dangerous highs.
1. Never leave children or pets in the car. For information on the deadly impacts, check out the blog here.
2. Although an iced coffee may sound refreshing on a hot day, the caffeine in it will raise body temperature and make it harder for your body to keep cool. Alcohol also raises the body's
temperature and should be consumed with caution in the heat. Instead, stay hydrated with
water and other hydrating liquids.
3. Dark clothing absorbs more heat than lighter clothing, so dress in lighter colors to stay
cool.
4. If you must be outside, try to work in the mornings and evenings, avoiding being out in the
hottest part of the day. If it is unavoidable, take regular breaks in the shade.
5. Recognize the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Heat exhaustion Symptoms can range from headaches and muscle cramps to nausea, dizziness and even fainting. Heat stroke
symptoms include rapid pulse and high fever in addition to headaches and nausea.
