Ramblings of a Parish Priest: Check out more at www.frdominic.com

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

On this feast day celebrating the Most Holy Body and Blood of our Lord, Jesus Christ, it’s clearer to me now more than ever how medicinal the Eucharist really is. Many of our people across the country (and even the world) have been deprived of the Eucharist since March. It’s the Eucharist that builds unity, offers peace, brings joy to our hearts, fans the flame of faith, and heals wounds caused by sin. When our lives don’t include the Eucharist, we can’t become who we receive in the Eucharist: Jesus Christ. I don’t think anyone will disagree with me that our world, and more so our country, really needs Jesus.

The power that comes from the Eucharist is a power that overwhelms our whole being. It’s a power that, if we submit to it, will convert our hearts into the Sacred Heart of Jesus (which we celebrate this coming Friday, June 19). Notice, the power of the Eucharist has nothing to do with worldly power; rather, the power of the Eucharist is a power to resist sin and accept grace from God, which is a free gift. If we want to stop sinning and become a Saint, then we need the Eucharist. Only through the power of the Eucharist will racism, violence, bigotry, hatred, anger, malice, sloth, pride, lust, greed, gluttony, and all other sins come to an end. Without the Eucharist, we are lost. Without the Eucharist, anything we attempt will be flawed and insufficient. Without the Eucharist, anything we have or do is temporary.

My brothers and sisters in Christ, cling to the Eucharist with everything you have! Come to adore the Lord in the Eucharist, make yourself available to receive the Eucharist as often as possible (with Sunday being the primary day), make sure your soul is in a state of grace so that you receive the Eucharist worthily (that means go to confession before receiving the Eucharist), and open your heart through daily prayer that you will receive all the graces God is giving you through the Eucharist. If we don’t go to confession, or pray, or read the scriptures, or do the works of mercy, then we are not allowing ourselves to receive all the graces possible that God is offering through the Eucharist. It’s like wearing a raincoat in the shower. Will we still get wet? Sure, water will find a way to break through the coat, but we won’t get clean. Showers are much more fruitful without a raincoat. Confession, daily prayer, reading the scriptures, and the works of mercy are how we take off the “raincoat” covering our heart. The “soap and water” in this analogy is the Eucharist coming to clean the sin off and heal the wounds.

I’m thrilled to announce that after three long months of only offering Holy Mass on the internet, we will be re-opening the doors for public celebrations of Holy Mass this Monday, June 15. We will return to our weekday schedule of offering Holy Mass Monday through Saturday at 8:15am. Our weekend Mass schedule will be modified a bit as we warm back up to public worship at Holy Mass: Saturday

evening at 4:30pm will be our vigil and Sunday we will celebrate together at 8:00am and 10:30am. This modified weekend schedule allows us to empty and disinfect the church in-between Masses.

Please note that we will only be able to let in 57 households at a time, with a max capacity of 135 people. Volunteer greeters will usher you to a pew (it may not be your regular seat) to help keep social distance. Everyone in Church will be required to wear a mask and use hand sanitizer when entering the Church. Holy Communion will be offered by the priest alone. You are asked to follow the markings on the floor when coming up for Holy Communion. Finally, please be aware of the assigned exits depending on where you’re sitting. We all thank you in advance for your understanding and flexibility.

I’m very grateful to all our generous volunteers who have made private prayer possible this first month of being open. If you are not in this “vulnerable population,” please consider volunteering and helping us out. The link to signup online can be found on our parish website, www.stedparish.org. I can’t wait to see you again at Holy Mass! I can’t wait for our Eucharistic community to once again offer and receive the greatest gift given to us by God: The Most Holy Body and Blood of Jesus Christ.

In Christ,

Novena to End the Coronavirus Pandemic

Novenas are an ancient tradition of prayer in times of great need. The practice traces its origin to when the apostles prayed for nine days between the Ascension of Jesus and the descent of the Holy Spirit. The rosary, too, is a powerful intercessory tool. If you find yourself with more time than usual during times of social distancing, you can

spiritually join with millions of Catholics by praying the rosary for worldwide healing. Pray the following for nine consecutive days:

O Mary, full of grace, patroness of this nation and Mother of the Church, in this time of worldwide illness we ask your intercession for the human family before your Son’s throne of grace and mercy. We ask for strength in adversity, health in weakness, and comfort in sorrow. We pray for all who have lost jobs or security at this time. May your Son watch over all who are sick and their caretakers, bring to heaven all who have died, and give wisdom to all who are seeking a cure to the Coronavirus. [mention your own intentions] St. Damien of Molokai, minister to lepers, pray for us

St. Anthony the Great, who healed infectious diseases, pray for us

St. Edmund, patron of victims of pandemics, pray for us

St. Frances Cabrini, foundress of hospitals, pray for us

St. Agatha, patron of nurses, pray for us

St. Luke, patron of doctors, pray for us

St. Joseph, patron of the dying, pray for us

All you holy angels and saints, pray for us

Help us, O Blessed Mother, to be filled with confidence in the tender compassion of our God. Calm our fears and help us to trust in the Divine Physician. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

A Note For Liturgical Ministers

Per the guidelines from the Archdiocese, the only liturgical ministers allowed are lectors and cantors. We are unable to use Extraordinary Ministers of Communion and Altar Servers so that we can keep social distance in the sanctuary.

It is our hope that in coming months as we move through the governor’s phases, that more liturgical ministers will be able to take part in our celebrations of Holy Mass.

As a reminder, our parish has GiveCentral electronic giving option available to use. Giving online provides our parish convenience and consistency during this trying time. Signing up for your GiveCentral account is quick and easy. Visit www.stedwardparish.org to get started. Alternatively, you can either mail your weekly parish contributions, or drop them in the mail slot at the door to the parish office.

Our regular offertory has dropped significantly. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
