Introduction

Let (X, ‖ · ‖) be a Banach space and C a subset of X.

Definition

A mapping T : C → C is said to be nonexpansive if

‖Tx− Ty‖ ≤ ‖x− y‖

for all x, y ∈ C.

First positive results

Theorem (D. Gohde, F. Browder, 1965)

Let X be a uniformly convex Banach space. Let C ⊂ X be aclosed convex bounded subset and T : C → C is nonexpansive.Then T has a fixed point.

Definition

A Banach space is said to have normal structure (NS) is forevery closed convex bounded subset C with diam(C) > 0, thereexists some x0 ∈ C such that

supy∈C‖x0 − y‖ < diam(C).

Theorem (A. Kirk, 1965)

Let X be a reflexive Banach space with normal structure. LetC ⊂ X be a closed convex bounded subset and T : C → Cnonexpansive. Then T has a fixed point.

Uniformly convex spaces are reflexive and have normalstructure.

Definition

A Banach space X has the fixed point property (FPP) if everynon-expansive mapping T : C → C, where C is a closedconvex bounded subset of X, has a fixed point.

Hilbert spaces, uniformly convex Banach spaces or, moregenerally, reflexive Banach spaces with normal structure havethe FPP.

Open problem

Does reflexivity imply FPP?

Page 6: Fixed Point Property in Banach spaces and some connections ...xiiiencmuva/charlas/xiiiMuVa_Japon.pdf · classical Banach spaces, Nonlinear Anal. 49, 141-145, 2002. T. Dom nguez Benavides,

The FPP is an isometric property.

The FPP is not preserved by isomorphisms:

The nonexpansiveness of the mapping (‖Tx− Ty‖ ≤ ‖x− y‖)depends on the underlying norm.

Open problem

If X is isomorphic to a uniformly convex Banach space(superreflexive), does X satisfies the FPP?

Given X a Hilbert space, does there exist some equivalent norm| · | such that (X, | · |) fails to have the FPP?

Page 7: Fixed Point Property in Banach spaces and some connections ...xiiiencmuva/charlas/xiiiMuVa_Japon.pdf · classical Banach spaces, Nonlinear Anal. 49, 141-145, 2002. T. Dom nguez Benavides,

Stability of the FPP

Given X, Y two isomorphic Banach spaces, the Banach-Mazurdistance is defined as

d(X,Y ) = inf{ ‖T‖ ‖T−1‖; T : X → Y isomorphism}

Given a Banach space X with the FPP.Does there exists some k = k(X) such that a Banach space Yhas the FPP whenever

d(X,Y ) < k?

Page 8: Fixed Point Property in Banach spaces and some connections ...xiiiencmuva/charlas/xiiiMuVa_Japon.pdf · classical Banach spaces, Nonlinear Anal. 49, 141-145, 2002. T. Dom nguez Benavides,

1 < p < +∞: If

d(`p, Y ) <(

1 + 21

p−1

) p−1p

then Y satisfies the FPP.

Let H be a Hilbert space. If

d(H,Y ) <

√5 +√

then Y has the FPP (E. Mazcunan Navarro, 2005).

The failure of the FPP

There exist some Banach spaces failing the FPP, such us(`1, ‖ · ‖1) and (c0, ‖ · ‖∞).

Every Banach space which contains an isometric copy of either`1 or c0 fail to have the FPP.

Question

If a Banach space X fails to have the FPP, does there exist anequivalent norm | · | such that (X, | · |) does have the FPP?

Could either `1 or c0 be FPP-renormable?

There exist some Banach spaces which are not FPP-renormable

First concepts

Definition (J. Hagler, 1972)

A Banach space (X, ‖ · ‖) contains an asymptotically isometriccopy of `1 (a.i.c. of `1) if there exist (xn) ⊂ X and (εn) ↓ 0 suchthat ∑

n

(1− εn)|tn| ≤

∥∥∥∥∥∑n

tnxn

∥∥∥∥∥ ≤∑n

|tn|

for all (tn) ∈ `1.

Theorem (P. Dowling, C. Lennard, B. Turett, 1996)

If a Banach space X contains an a.i.c. of `1, then X fails tohave the FPP.

Page 12: Fixed Point Property in Banach spaces and some connections ...xiiiencmuva/charlas/xiiiMuVa_Japon.pdf · classical Banach spaces, Nonlinear Anal. 49, 141-145, 2002. T. Dom nguez Benavides,

Let Γ be an uncountable set. Every renorming of `1(Γ) containsan asymptotically isometric copy of `1.

Theorem

`1(Γ) cannot be renormed to have the FPP.

Theorem

If X is a Banach space which contains an isomorphic copy of`1, then X∗ contains a copy of `1(Γ) for some uncountable Γ.In particular X∗ cannot be renormed to have the FPP.The space `∞ is not FPP-renormable.

Theorem (P. Dowling, C. Lennard, B. Turett)

For Γ uncountable, c0(Γ) is not FPP-renormable.

Positive results

Theorem (T. Domınguez-Benavides, 2008)

Every reflexive Banach space admits an equivalent norm withthe FPP.

Idea of the proof

X has a Markushevich basis, then there exists a one-to-onecontinuous embedding

J : X → c0(Γ).

Take the norm:|x|2 := ‖x‖2 + ‖Jx‖2∞

(X, | · |) has the FPP.

Page 14: Fixed Point Property in Banach spaces and some connections ...xiiiencmuva/charlas/xiiiMuVa_Japon.pdf · classical Banach spaces, Nonlinear Anal. 49, 141-145, 2002. T. Dom nguez Benavides,

`1 is FPP-renormable

Some background

Since 1965, it was conjectured that FPP could implyreflexivity.

By James’ theorem, if | · | is an equivalent norm in `1, then(`1, | · |) contains a subspace which is “almost” isometric to(`1, ‖ · ‖1). Then, for a long time it was thought that forevery equivalent norm | · | in `1, the space (`1, | · |) could failthe FPP.

Lemma (P. Dowling, C. Lennard, B. Turett)

is an equivalent norm in `1 and (`1, ||| · |||) does not have ana.i.c. of `1.

Could (`1, ||| · |||) have the FPP...?

Page 16: Fixed Point Property in Banach spaces and some connections ...xiiiencmuva/charlas/xiiiMuVa_Japon.pdf · classical Banach spaces, Nonlinear Anal. 49, 141-145, 2002. T. Dom nguez Benavides,

Theorem (P.K. Lin, 2008 )

(`1, ||| · |||) has the FPP.

(`1, ||| · |||) was the first known nonreflexive Banach spacewith the FPP

The above shows that FPP does not imply reflexivity

The above shows that the FPP is not preserved byisomorphisms: (`1, ‖ · ‖1) fails the FPP whereas (`1, ||| · |||)does fulfill the FPP.

Sequentially separating norms

Definition

Let X be a Banach space with a Schauder basis. An equivalentnorm p(·) is a sequentially separating norm (s.s.n.) if for everyε > 0 there exists some k ∈ N such that

p(x) + lim supn

p(xn) ≤ (1 + ε) lim supn

p(x+ xn)

whenever k ≤ x and (xn)n is a block basic sequence in X.

Examples of sequentially separating norms

‖ · ‖1 and P.K. Lin’s norm ||| · ||| in `1 are s.s.n.

For Nakano sequence Banach spaces `(pn) with limn pn = 1,the usual norm is s.s.n.

Page 18: Fixed Point Property in Banach spaces and some connections ...xiiiencmuva/charlas/xiiiMuVa_Japon.pdf · classical Banach spaces, Nonlinear Anal. 49, 141-145, 2002. T. Dom nguez Benavides,

Let p0(·) be a premonotone and s.s.n. Define

p1(x) = supkγkp0(Qk(x)) (γk)k ⊂ (0, 1), lim

kγk = 1.

Then p1 is a (premonotone) s.s.n.

By recurrence: pn(x) = supk γkpn−1(Qk(x)) are s.s.n. forevery n ∈ N.

Theorem (A. Barrera-Cuevas, M.A. Japon)

Let X be a Banach space with a boundedly complete Schauderbasis. Let p0(·) be an equivalent premonotone sequentiallyseparating norm.Then (X, p1) has the FPP and so does (X, pn) for everyn = 1, 2, ....

Page 19: Fixed Point Property in Banach spaces and some connections ...xiiiencmuva/charlas/xiiiMuVa_Japon.pdf · classical Banach spaces, Nonlinear Anal. 49, 141-145, 2002. T. Dom nguez Benavides,

Let P(X) denote the set of equivalent norms in a Banach spaceX.

Theorem

Let X be a Banach space with a boundedly complete Schauderbasis. Assume there exists some p0 ∈ P(X) which is apremonotone s.s.n.Then for every n ∈ N, the set of P(X) with the FPP containsn-dimensional affine manifolds.

For instance, for every λi ≥ 0, the norm

p0(·) + λ1p1(·) + · · ·λnpn(·)

verifies the FPP.

A little bit of geometry

Which Banach spaces can be renormed with a sequentiallyseparating norm?

Theorem

Let X be a Banach space which a Schauder basis which admitsan equivalent sequentially separating norm. Then X has theSchur property and it is hereditarily `1.

There exist some Banach spaces with boundedly completeSchauder basis, non-isomorphic to `1 and with sequentiallyseparating equivalent norms.

Theorem (C. Hernandez-Linares,M. Japon)

If G is a separable compact group, its Fourier-Stieltjesalgebra B(G) is FPP-renormable.

There exist some nonreflexive and non-isomorphic-`1Banach subspaces of L1[0, 1] which are FPP-renormable.
