Alma Flamenca Instructors
Kari Alba, Artistic Director
Kari Alba, “La Aceitunita,” the
artistic director of Alma Flamenca,
has been living and breathing
Flamenco for many years, ever since
she stumbled upon the Flamenco
movie “El Amor Brujo” on television
when she was eight years old. She pursued her
Flamenco training in Andalucía, the southern region of
Spain from which Flamenco emerged. Alba has spent
a total of 4 years in Sevilla, the hotbed of Flamenco in
Spain, mentoring with some of the best dancers as well
as attending the Teachers’ Specialization Course at La
Fundación; she returns every year to hone her skills
with the following most prominent flamencos such as
Beatriz Martin, Juana Amaya, Andres Marín, Matilde
Coral, Adela Campallo, Pastora Galván, and Mercedes
Ruíz. Kari Alba has been consistently recognized as an
exceptional Flamenco performer. She has performed
internationally and across Canada alongside such
notable performers as Manuel Gutierrez, José Cortés,
Juan Cortés & Ricardo Diaz of Flamenco Sur (Spain);
El Zantito, Zamná Urista-Rojas & José Ramirez (Spain);
Sabas (Mexico). Alba’s impeccable technique
combined with an ability to convey the deep emotion
and passion of the dance inspires audiences in Prague,
Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Regina, Saskatoon and
all over Saskatchewan.
Alice Kirchgesner, Instructor
Alice Kirchgesner joined the Alma
Flamenca school several years ago,
finding in Flamenco a new direction
for her love of dance and music,
which had been cultivated during
her 12 years training in ballet, tap and jazz. In
addition to extensive instruction from her mentor, Kari
Alba, and local workshops with Cristina Halls, Jessica
“La Moraína”, Manuel Gutierrez and others, Alice has
also trained in Sevilla, Spain with such flamenco greats
as Juana Amaya, Mercedes Ruíz, Pastora Galván and
Pilar Ortega. As member of the Amantes de Flamenco
performing group, Alice has performed in many
Flamenco productions such as Spain Meets Canada,
Ness Creek Music Festival, Dare to Dance, the SooRyu
About Alma Flamenca…
Alma Flamenca (“Flamenco Soul”) is dedicated to
promoting the highest quality of Flamenco and strives to
achieve a thorough and deep understanding of Flamenco
technique, structure and artistry. Our teachers are
prepared to give only the highest standard of instruction.
Each student is encouraged to achieve his or her
maximum level of performance, and may be invited to
audition for our semi-professional performing group
“Amantes de Flamenco”, with the instructor’s approval.
Alma Flamenca is a non-profit organization dedicated to
instructing, promoting and inspiring the art of Flamenco
in Saskatoon and Western Canada. Flamenco Dance and
Percussion (cajon & palmas) Classes are offered on a
weekly schedule, and Classes in Flamenco Guitar and
Cante/Singing are offered regularly throughout the year
on a workshop basis. Alma Flamenca teaches all
Flamenco styles, including: “jondo” (deep song), such as
Soleares, Tientos, Seguiriyas; “chico” (light song), such as
Tango, Tanguillo, Garrotín; “folklorico” (folk music), such
as Sevillanas, Fandango de Huelva; and “ida y vuelta”
(South American influenced) Guajiras, Columbianas.
Alma Flamenca is also responsible for presenting
Flamenco shows and workshops in and around
Saskatoon and Western Canada. Their most widely
know presentation is the Spain Meets Canada Flamenco
Festival, which unites Artists from Spain and Canada,
including Alma Flamenca’s own semi-professional
performing group, Amantes de Flamenco. Alma Flamenca
has also participated in the first “Canada Meets Spain”
Group Trip to Spain, in which students travelled to
Seville, Spain to learn Flamenco in its place of origin.
See reverse for classes & registration.
Dance Festival in Toronto, and other productions with
Flamenco artists such as Manuel Gutierrez, Zamná
Urista-Rojas, José Ramirez, and Cele “El Zantito” Garrido
Santos of Spain, and Peter Mole, Tosh Hayashi, Ali
Golbabai and El Pirouz of Canada. Alice’s dancing has
been praised for her natural connection with the music
and exceptional expression of mood and emotion. This is
Alice’s 4th year as an instructor at Alma Flamenca.
Classes & Costumes
Students are encouraged, although it is not necessary, to
attend classes for the full session, which runs 9 months
(October – June). At the end of the session, students have
the opportunity to perform in the annual Alma Flamenca
Student Expo, although participation is not required.
Regardless of whether students perform in the Expo, they
all require proper attire for classes – Flamenco
shoes/boots and, for women, a black flamenco practice
skirt (ordered from the school seamstress Brenda
Ballendine – [email protected] OR 306-374-6313).
Some second-hand shoes, skirts and costumes are
available for sale at the in-person registration, and
additional information regarding buying shoes and
costumes will be available. Proper, good-quality
Flamenco shoes can be most easily purchased from
Menkes in New York. You can preview the styles at
http://flamenco.menkes.es/index.php, but we strongly
recommend ordering in person over the phone to receive
assistance with choosing a size.
Call toll-free to New York: 1-877-227-5460.
All Beg/Int dance students wishing to perform in the
Expo and other events will require the standard costume
made by the school seamstress. This standard skirt &
shawl costume is used at least two years in a row for
Beginner & Intermediate. In the higher level classes
(Int/Adv and up), a new costume is needed each year,
which also must be purchased from the school seamstress
(Brenda Ballendine or Kay’s Sewing). However, previous
costumes continue to be used in a variety of shows.
