ContentsFlash storage is any type of data storage system that uses flash memory.
Flash memory is used in many devices including SSDs, laptops, tablets,
mobile phones, GPS devices, USB drives, video games and memory cards. It
is being used more and more in larger applications including All Flash Arrays
(AFA - solid state storage disk systems containing multiple flash memory
drives instead of spinning HDDs).
According to IDC, while the traditional hard disk array segment in EMEA is
declining in user spend, the flash market recorded huge growth. All Flash
Arrays sales grew over 75% annually and hybrid flash systems grew 7% year-
on-year.

Contents• Flash storage is more resistant to the bumps and drops notebooks often receive in
their mobile lives. The rugged nature allows the drives to maintain function through
these events, which saves data.
• Flash is compact and has up to 50% lower power consumption due
to the fact that there are no moving mechanical parts involved
• Flash storage provides much quicker read/write
access than mechanical hard drives

Contents1. It is not prone to electromagnetic interference which makes it more reliable when
compared to HDD.
2. Flash storage latency is 1,000 times lower than HDD storage.
3. Flash data storage requires less maintenance than HDD storage.
4. Flash storage consumes considerably less power and cooling resources because it
has no moving parts.
5. Flash storage needs significantly less floor space.
6. Provides much more I/O compared to traditional HHD with performance
improvements spanning from 10x to 100x
7. Flash storage drives uptime is usually 99.9%. HDD is far less – sometimes as low as in
the 80s.
8. Data reduction technologies do a better job on flash storage than HDD storage.
Whilst the purchase price of the HDD may be lower, when you add storage software
services, power, cooling, rack space, floor space, maintenance, reliability, availability and
serviceability into the equation, a more realistic total cost picture represented is delivered.

ContentsIMPROVED SPEED AND PERFORMANCE
• Increase application performance up to 20 times
• Increase database application throughput by up to 4 times
• Decrease application latency by up to 20 times
FLASH STORAGE BUSINESS BENEFITS
• Go to market quicker with faster performing applications
• Become ‘greener’ with up to 95% reduction in space, power and cooling
• Consume data at speeds of 12GB/sec, which is like downloading a Blu-Ray movie in 2 seconds
REDUCTION IN COSTS AND IMPROVED CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE
• Slash servers and database licenses by 50%
• Quick return on investment - all-flash systems yield payback in six months
• Deliver a consistent customer experience

Contents• Avoid up to 93% of traditional performance-related storage problems
• Improve user experience by reducing database latencies by 90%
• Increase application performance up to 20% for improved productivity
• Consolidate application infrastructure by at least 50% to reduce total cost of ownership
• Reduce database license costs by 50%
• Improve reliability
• Reduce floor space needed
• Reduce storage administrative time
• Accelerate databases with higher IOPS and faster response times
• Overprovisioning can be eliminated and costs are dramatically reduced by cutting space
requirements, power usage and cooling by up to 95%.
An IDC survey of 300 participants in North America found the top 3 most significant benefits of AFAs
are improved reliability, increased IOPS (Input/output Operations per Second) for key applications and
reduction in floor space requirements.
The industry is still at the beginning of flash memory adoption. IDC projects that the All Flash Array
(AFA) market will grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 46.1% from 2013 to 2018 and will
reach $3.3 billion by the end of 2018. The hybrid flash array market will grow at a CAGR of 8.1% during
the same period. Comparatively, the overall enterprise external storage systems market is expected to
grow at a low single-digit CAGR during the same period.
Flash storage is definitely becoming the way forward across all industries.
Conclusion: Why should you adopt flash storage?
