phase 1 : concept design
OBJECTIVESTo explore design concept options.
ACTIVITIESWe will explore design ideas and concepts and anticipate producing a range of ideas. Through a col-laborative process of evaluation together we will decide which are the most appropriate and relevant ideas to take forward into the next phase.
OUTPUTSketches and 3D visuals

SU Container restrictions
Dimensions for Diethelm SU Container above: (Still awaiting exact dimensions for Driessen SU Container)
Malton undertook some initial studies to establish the overall sizes for this product. We established that to allow six (6) servers to stack into an SU container (see diagram bottom right for overall dims of SU used), the maximum diameter of the product must be less than 122mm.
In regards to ensuring the product stores 1.5L of liquid; our size guidelines of a base diameter of maximum 122mm and height of 255mm (to fit within SU) will allow enough room to achieve this.
A ‘server’ model was created as a sizing template to; 1) guide us in our designs, and; 2) test inside the SU to ensure the size restrictions listed above were correct.
Screenshots of the ‘server’ template model are below.

tessellated vs standard packing
tessellated standard
During the studies carried out on the previous page Malton also explored how the differences in product layout inside the SU could have provided more flexibility in overall size. We felt that even when designing a shape to maximise space in a tessellated format, the product would on most occasions still comfortably fit in a standard format.
We concluded that due to the shape restrictions of tessellated stacking, along with the minimal advantage in overall shape this stacking provides, a standard stack would be preferred (base diameter of the product must remain under 122mm).
