A fully qualified herbalist, Chloe willshow you how to make pleasant tasting andmedicinal teas, and she will explain how to storeherbs for year-round use. Join Mark Williams of GallowayWildFoods.com for aday hunting fungi in the forest. Over two locations,you will be taught how to find, identify, sustainablyharvest and cook the finest wild mushrooms available– including ceps, chanterelles, hedgehog fungi and,with luck, even more exciting species like currymilkcaps and cauliflower fungi. The day will be splitinto two locations to allow you to learn about avariety of habitats. You will also look closely atpoisonous species and you should leave with theconfidence to gather fungi for yourself. Includes a wildfungi cook-in in the forest. Garrocher Market Garden produces bountiful crops ofdelicious home grown herbs, vegetables, plants andfruits. Sheltered by trees and set amongst deep wildifeponds the garden sits in an old sand quarry. Around athird of this one acre garden has so far beencultivated with the remainder a beautifully naturalspace. Angela of Garrocher is opening the doors toher garden for the first time during Flavour Fortnightand she invites you to explore her work in progress. As well as Garrocher’s herbs, seasonal salads and freshveg, there will also be a collection of chilli plants fromGalloway Chillies and a display of Chloe Bruce’s herbalteas. Parking at the garden is limited but there is asmall car park at the Balloch Wood Community Ponds.Sturdy shoes are recommended. Please note that thisis a working garden - there are no facilities at thegarden and some of the paths are uneven, so pleasetake care. Due to the depth of the ponds and thenature of the garden please refrain from bringingdogs, and while children are welcome to accompanyan adult, they should be closely supervised at alltimes.

This behind the scenes tour will start with a visit to theViewing Gallery overlooking the factory where Creamo’ Galloway produce ice cream and cheese. You’ll hearabout the production processes and try a small taster.A walk around the old and new farm buildings,including the new milking parlour, will give you aninsight into this working farm. On the tour you’ll hearhow a new style slurry tank - an anaerobic biodigester- will become part of the new set up too, harvestingthe methane produced by the slurry and using it togenerate electricity and hot water. The route is suitablefor those with buggies or wheelchairs. Children under12 must be accompanied by a paying adult.

With one of the most spectacular and productivekitchen gardens in Dumfries & Galloway, Caroline andDavid Lawrie of The Schoolhouse at Ringford areopening their garden to the public for the first time forFlavour Fortnight. The 100 foot garden includesspinach, lettuce, courgettes, cucumbers, carrots,potatoes, french, dwarf and green beans, broccoli,sweetcorn, shallots, sweet potato, cabbage, rhubarb,plums, apples, pears, pak choi, mint, blackcurrants,raspberries, strawberries and blueberries. David’sgardening skills are entirely self taught, and he’ll chatabout his methods of cultivating a rich harvest,including the use of propagators and tunnels. With somuch of the produce used in The Schoolhouse pickedfrom the garden a few hours before it is served, thedishes on the restaurant menu pack a seriousnutritional punch too. Nutritionist Lorna Willock will jointhe tour and will give a short talk about the nutritionalbenefits of eating such fresh and vibrant foods.

In this interactive evening you will enjoy ashort tour with farmer Robin Austin where you willlearn how Barstobrick cattle and lamb are raised toachieve excellent quality and welfare standards atcompetitive prices. Back at the visitor centrerestaurant, Barstobrick butcher Clark Gracey will give ashort butchery demonstration before you sit back toenjoy what you have learned with a 3 course menushowcasing Barstobrick meat. John Lockwood is one of a very small number of peoplein Scotland who make their living keeping bees and he’llexplain how he goes about producing his honey.
