This year’s Fleet WeekGrunt Run will be held onOct. 13 and will have attend-ees pushing their bodies to thelimit, in more ways than one.

The Grunt Run, whichis held at Naval SupportActivity Hampton Roads,Northwest Annex, will haveparticipants experienceobstacles, rough terrain, climbs, swamps and otherchallenges under the watch-ful eye of their personal drillinstructor.

“This run will take peopleout of their every day com-fort zone of normal physi-cal training and force themto push their bodies to the

limit,” said Glenn Nelson,MWR Athletic and FitnessDirector and Grunt Run racedirector.

The course is more thanfive miles long and willconsist of mud crawls, wallclimbs, an ammo can carry, barrier jumps and a few othersurprising obstacles.

The run, which attractedapproximately 500 peoplelast year, entailed variousplanning components, suchas developing a planningteam, setting up meetingdates, assigning differentareas of responsibility, set-ting up marketing, designingartwork for the flyers and T-shirts, and establishing vol-unteer requirements.

“Basically an event suchas this requires a lot of plan-ning and team work,” saidNelson.

The run is free for themilitary community with-out a T-shirt purchase; themilitary community with aT-shirt purchase is $15; thegeneral public without a T-shirt purchase is $20; and thegeneral public with a T-shirtpurchase is $30. Participantscan run individually or aspart of a co-ed team.

“This event creates an op-portunity for some familyfun,” said Nelson. “In addi-tion to the actual run, we willhave a rock climbing wall, corn hole and bouncing ride. Most of all, this event givesbase personnel a chance toconnect with other memberswho are stationed here.”

By Vice Adm. Richard W. HuntDirector, Navy staff

As we celebrate our Navy’s237th birthday, our historyand heritage forms our iden-tity, telling us who we areand what we stand for. Ourcore values of Honor, Cour-age and Commitment havebeen passed down from ourfounders, who charged theNavy with the solemn dutyto serve as the “shield” of ourrepublic. The first real testour Navy faced was duringthe War of 1812. This warbegan at sea when UnitedStates ships were ordered toheave to upon the high seasand U.S. citizens were force-fully taken, or impressed, intothe crews of another nation’sships. The great battles thatfollowed proved the fightingmettle of our Sailors and thecutting edge of our ship de-signs.

These battles establishedboth free trade and free navi-gation as critical nationalinterests of our country – in-terests that endure to this day.The warrior characteristicsof cunning and boldness ex-hibited in 1812 inspire ourSailors of today’s Navy asthey continue to serve aroundthe world. The War of 1812served as a critical turningpoint for our Navy.

On this 237th birthday ofour Navy, we have the honorto serve in the greatest mari-time fighting force the worldhas ever seen, but we do sowith humility, continuing tobuild upon the frameworkthose fighting Sailors forgedbefore us. History teaches usthat with great power comesgreat responsibility. From thegreat captains and crews whofought single ship actions in1812 to the commerce raid-ers of the Civil War; fromthe convoys of World War I

to the major fleet actions atcoral sea and midway; fromthe blockade of Cuba in Oc-tober of 1962 to the Riverineoperations on the Tigris andthe Euphrates, our Navy hasboldly and proudly put ourshoulder to the wheel. Wehave championed peace andwe continue to shield the re-public. Here is to 237 yearsof proud naval heritage andmany more!

VIRGINIA BEACH

For visitors who enjoyedthe opportunity to see alocal naval installationduring last months’s NASOceana Air Show, anotheropportunity to visit a Navybase and enjoy anotherfamily-friendly event isjust around the corner. Theannual Fleet Week ChiliCook-off, being held atDam Neck Annex this year, takes place on Oct. 13, from11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Theevent is open to the generalpublic and offers some ofthe best tasting chili on theEast Coast – with more than20 military teams compet-ing for top honors.

This year’s event coin-cides with the 237th birth-day of the Navy. Admissionand parking are free for thecook-off, although therewill be small charge for thechili samples.

Although conflicts withschedules at the Oceana’sMain Gate Park and otherFleet Week Hampton Roadsevents meant moving the lo-cation, NAS Oceana Com-manding Officer Capt. BobGeis felt strongly he shouldhost it again this year.

“This has been a greatevent, traditionally held atOceana, and we would liketo continue to show our sup-port to the public and havethe public enjoy Dam NeckAnnex,” he said. “It’s a greatevent, it’s a fantastic venue. We will provide the sameaccess [to the public] as wehave at the Main Gate Park.”

The Chili Cook-Off will

be held at the FairwindsSoftball Park, field 1, acrossfrom Navy Federal on DamNeck. The new venue isa roomy location for theteams and offers a picnicarea for visitors to sit andenjoy their chili samples, along with a playground forchildren.

“It’s a highly-desired lo-cation,” said Geis.

The Chili Cook-Off isbeing sponsored by the JetObserver, the official Navynewspaper of NAS Oceana,Dam Neck Annex andNALF Fentress.

“We’re excited to onceagain support our troops andtheir families by sponsoringthis year’s Chili Cook-off,”said Laura Baxter, publish-er and general manager ofMilitary Newspapers of Vir-ginia. “The Chili Cook-Offis part of Fleet Week here inHampton Roads. It’s a long-standing tradition.”

Commands wanting toearn some extra money fortheir MWR funds have theperfect opportunity withthe Chili Cook-Off. Thebest tasting and most origi-nal chili will earn $300 forfirst, $200 for second and$100 for third place; thebig dipper award for the

most samples sold will earn$300; and the team withthe most showmanship cantake home a prize of $200.There is no charge to enterthe competition.

With the event takingplace near Halloween, teams in previous yearshave gotten into the seasonwith everything fromthe ghoulish spirit of themonth to “Roadkill Chili,”making the competition forthe showmanship award asfierce as the competition forthe best chili.

“It’s a great opportunityfor healthy competition,”said Geis about the com-mand teams which competeyear after year.

For the teams with earlyrisers, the cooking areaopens at 6:30 a.m., butteams are only allowed amaximum of four hours tocook up their own specialstews. And nearly every-thing must be cooked on-site. The exceptions canbe mixing and grinding of

spices and canned or bottletomatoes and pepper sauces.

While each team mustbring their own cookingitems, such as pots andpans, they will receive a$200 gift card to Farm Freshto purchase all of their in-gredients.

Baxter urges teams to useevery dollar of those giftcards to stock up on ingredi-ents, mentioning how in pastyears teams have run outof samples long before thecompetition formally ended.

“If you want to taste somegreat chili, you need to headout to see us. As a previ-ous judge, I can tell you it’sextremely hard to choosewhich team has the bestchili,” she said. “That’s whyI’m glad we give out eightawards and almost $2,000in prize money.”

Each team will provide aquart of chili for the panelof 10 judges to begin sam-

pling at 1 p.m. The winnerswill be announced near theend of the event.

“There’s always a greatsmorgasbord of flavors,”said Geis, who has servedas a judge for several of thecompetitions. “Stews overthe years have includedsecret ingredients of veni-son, unique varieties of to-matoes and spices, choco-late and “mystery meats.”

In addition to all the chilisamples, MWR will offerreasonably-priced conces-sions on-site. There willalso be a large children’sarea with fun contests, in-flatables and more.
