MESSAGE FROM THE RABBIThis month we celebrate Sukkot. Sukkot, according to the Torah,

comes just after Yom Kippur. Originally a harvest holiday, Sukkot is the most joyous of holidays. Sukkot literally means “huts,” or “temporary dwellings.” We build these to commemorate how our ancestors lived as they left Mount Sinai, where they received the Torah, and wandered through the desert on the way to the land of Israel. These were also used by our ancestors who dwelt in that land. Farmers during the harvest season built these huts so they could spend the night in their fields without having to make the journey back to the towns and villages in which they lived. Sukkot ends with Simchat Torah, the celebration of finishing the Torah and beginning it again.

As our ancestors traversed the wilderness of Sinai, they learned how to behave in such a way that G-d would agree to travel with them. When the Israelite people ultimately built their Temple in Jerusalem, King Solomon completed it on the holiday of sukkot. This was a house in which G-d could dwell among us, assuming we behaved in such a way that He would agree to do so.

In his book, Sinai and Zion, Jon Levenson contrasts these two mountains, Sinai (where we received the Torah) and the Temple Mount. Both are symbolically crucial to the Jewish people interestingly, Sinai never receives the kind of building attention Zion does. No one constructs a temple there. No permanent shrine or marker is erected on the very spot

G-d gave the Torah to the Jewish people. Sinai does not even fall within the ancient boundaries of the land of Israel, even as these change over the millennia. And yet, as holy as Mount Zion is, as holy as the city of Jerusalem is, we’ve never forgotten Mount Sinai. Most Near Eastern cultures built temples to their gods in their capitals, and the Bible tells us that Solomon took his inspiration from the Phoenician cult. However, G-d did not give the Torah to Solomon upon the completion of the Temple. The City of Jerusalem was the ancient center in which we expressed our devotion to G-d, but Sinai was the place that G-d showed Divine love for us. Perhaps because Sinai represented the initiative G-d took in reaching out to us, rather than the other way around, the ancients did not think it appropriate to alter the site in any way. What could humans do to improve on G-d’s chosen place?

Sinai, our wanderings in the wilderness, and the temporary structures in which we dwelt all provided our ancestors with an important model for how to be Jewish when the Temple no longer stood in Jerusalem. Even without Solomon’s Temple, we could reach back into our past and find a way to maintain our Jewishness. No glorious architecture, just a profound appreciation for G-d’s presence everywhere, even while dwelling in the most barren of places, even while living in a sukkah. Let us never forget that G-d can be found everywhere if we are willing to let Him in.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENTDear FJCC Congregants,

As we enter the High Holiday season, we are at the threshold of many dynamic changes at the FJCC. On Yom Kippur we will rededicate and rename our sanctuary in memory of Rabbi Jaffe. The “Jaffe and Kalafer Families Sanctuary” will reflect the commitment Rabbi Jaffe made to each of us, our children, and our community. Our bond with Rabbi Jaffe will be further honored by the Rededication - Yizkor pledges you have made in his memory.

Welcoming Rabbi CohenRabbi Eric Cohen has been with us six weeks, and we

are all getting to know each other. He started his first night leading us in Tisha B’Av services, and then we welcomed him with a community-wide barbecue, saw him dress up as a Jedi at our Star Wars Shabbat, and drummed with him at our drumming circle for Kabbalat Shabbat. Rabbi Cohen has met with our Hebrew School, Bat and Bar Mitzvah children, and Hebrew High School students. Please feel free to reach out to Rabbi Cohen to get to know him and to share with him your vision of our evolving FJCC.

The FJCC Youth GroupOur Youth Group is newly invigorated with a group of

dynamic students. The focus of the FJCC-YG will be on Young Judea (YJ) programming for children in grades 2 through 7 and United Synagogue Youth (USY) Programming for young people in grades 8 through 12. The Youth Group will hold elections for their leadership positions, and you will soon see descriptions of the responsibilities of each. All students will be invited to self-nominate, and elections will be held. The Youth Group will create its calendar of events combining regional USY and YJ activities as well as unique FJCC youth group plans. We hope to hire a Youth Group advisor in the next few weeks. Please join us in congratulating our Youth Group on the work they have done this summer to get our youth activities moving ahead.

Interfaith ActivitiesMembers of our shul come from many faith traditions. It

can be challenging to merge one’s faith background with Jewish life. Rabbi Cohen will lead the first of our interfaith group meetings on Sunday, October 15, which will focus on contributions our non-Jewish members can make to the FJCC community. Members and non-members of the FJCC are welcome, so please reach out to family and friends who might like to participate.

Thank YouWe deeply thank Josy Kestenbaum, Jeff Marshall, and

Alisa Grossman for organizing and inviting us to participate in hosting families during our Family Promise week. They helped us do our share to support those in our local community who are less fortunate than we. Many thanks to Jocelyn and Helen Pollack for helping to save lives through the blood drive they brought to our shul.

Mazel TovMany mazel tovs are in order. Mazel tov to Rachel

Rosenberg and Samantha Cass on becoming B’not Mitzvah. Mazel tov on the births of grandchildren: to Adah and Alan Radzin on the birth of their granddaughter Violet, to Mona and Dein Shapiro on the birth of their grandson, to Lois and Dan Gross on the birth of their granddaughter Carmel.

Center SeriesOctober’s Center Series programming includes Shannon

Sarna, the author of Modern Jewish Baker, who will give us a challah baking demonstration on Sunday, October 8; the kick-off of our basic Hebrew reading class on Wednesday, October 18; and a talk by Bernard Beck, author of One American Dream, on Thursday, October 26.

With best wishes for a sweet, healthy, satisfying new year for you and your family,

FLEMINGTON JEWISH COMMUNITY CENTER to Host Shannon Sarna, Author of Modern Jewish BakerThe Flemington Jewish Community Center will host a

baking demonstration and tasting by Shannon Sarna, author of Modern Jewish Baking on Sunday, October 8, at 1:00 PM. Shannon is the editor of the popular Jewish food blog, “The Nosher.” Her take on traditional Jewish foods is modern, multi-ethnic, irreverent, and fun. Admission to the event is $10, which includes the demonstration and tastings. The cookbook is available for purchase and will be personally signed by Shannon. Please register at https://tinyurl.com/ycq3ovql or call 908-782-6410.

.Sarna begins her instructions in Jewish baking with detailed guides to the techniques behind seven essential recipes—challah, babka, rugelach, pita, bagels, hamantaschen and matzah. She then presents traditional recipes with a decidedly modern edge, like spinach artichoke dip pull-apart challah, white chocolate and peach rugelach, roasted garlic infused pita and birthday cake babka. Her work has been featured in Edible Brooklyn, Parade, Modern

Loss, Vinepair, Tablet, and Buzzfeed. Sarna lives in South Orange, NJ, with her husband, daughters, and two rescue dogs, Otis and Babka.

The Center Series, a programming initiative of the Flemington Jewish Community Center, brings readings, lectures, films, and musical performances, to the community, with all programs open to the general public. Upcoming events include a children’s performance of The Tortoise and the Hare by the West Side Woodwind Quintet in conjunction with the FJCC Nursery Crafts Fair on Sunday, November 5, at 1:00 PM. HEBREW SCHOOL HAPPENINGSI write this message as we are preparing for the High

Holidays. The students returned to school most excited. It was nice to hear the chatter in the hallways. We taught Rabbi Cohen a few of our tricks during Rabbi time in the sanctuary. The children made Rosh Hashanah cards for the residents at the Hunterdon Developmental Center and Independence Manor. During school in the coming days we will be making decorations for the sukkah and learning songs for Simchat Torah.

We will be fostering a new activity this year called “the passport” in which we send suggestions home to encourage

living Jewishly outside the Hebrew School classroom. We hope to build a Jewish connection in everyday activities.

Our first tzedakah project will be to collect money for victims of hurricanes in Florida and Texas. All tzedakah collected will be sent to Jewish Federation of Somerset, Hunterdon and Warren Counties who will match our contribution before sending it to Federations of North America to be distributed to areas of need.
