A look at what’s new from theleading company in flexible andpliable conduit systems…
Our continued policy of new product development, inline with worldwide market requirements has resultedin the printing of this, our new product catalogue.
The global market for flexible conduit systemscontinues to move towards non-metallic systems, andthis is reflected in the many new products in thispublication. However, the more traditional metallicconduit systems continue to be very important forAdaptaflex, with new developments being introducedto widen the application of these systems.
Market Changes
Recently the most significant changes in our markethave been the introduction of new Internationalstandards, namely, the European Standard EN50086which specifies performances for conduit systems forelectrical installations, and the EC directives forelectromagnetic compatibility (EMC).
Since Adaptaflex has representatives involved in writingthese new standards, you can be assured that theproducts you are buying represent the very latest indesign philosophies.
For example, we introduce a whole new range of Hi-Spec products for specialised applications, wherefire and toxic fume risks are of particular concern orwhere electromagnetic interference (EMI) screening of conduit is called for. To help recognise these special properties we have introduced a set of symbolswhich allow you, at a glance, to see the varying degreesof performance.

Extended Adaptalok Range
Adaptalok, the non-metallic conduit system with ‘push-on’ fittings is now recognised as being the lowestinstalled cost system due to how quickly it can beassembled together. Now, to add more versatility weintroduce a unique range of swivel, brass threadedAdaptalok fittings with their increased strength makingthem more suitable when a high tightening torque isnecessary. Swivel elbows offer a particular benefit whenused with threaded entries, since they can beaccurately positioned after installation.

These versatile systems meet the limited dynamic or staticand weatherproof requirements of most industrial andcommercial applications.
Type SP is widely used in combination with rigid conduitand trunking, whilst halogen-free Type SN provides theenhanced resistance to solvents and abrasion over a widertemperature range.
The flame retardant, low smoke density and toxicityproperties of halogen-free Type LFH-SP complement FirePerformance cable where public safety is of concern, e.g.in Hospitals, Shopping & Leisure centres and UndergroundRailways.

Type PA conduits offer a range of pitches and weights enabling users to strike the correctbalance of mechanical strength and flexibility to suit most applications.
In addition, the flame retardant, low smoke density and toxicity properties of Halogen-free, low fire hazard (LFH) Type PA conduit complement the fire performance cableincreasingly being specified where public safety or the integrity of electronic equipmentare of concern.
More stringent Fire performance approvals, i.e. for Railway rolling stock or undergroundareas are met by enhanced low fire hazard (ELFH) Type PR conduit.
Robotic, rapid or continuous motion applications demanding high fatigue life and extraflexibility are covered by:
Type PI conduit, which is also used in low temperature environments.
Type PP conduit combined with Adaptalok Type PPA fittings provides a highly acid resistant, flexible system.

Adaptalok fittings’ simple push and twist mounting ensures highmechanical strength and IP66 assembly with Type PA/PR/PI/PPconduits, whilst unauthorised or accidental removal is prevented bythe necessity to use a screwdriver or tool.
Adaptalok fittings complement LFH Type PA & PR conduits forassured fire performance with Nylon versions constructed from thePA66 grade giving added mechanical strength over PA6 fittings.
Type PPA fittings combine with conduit Type PP to provide a highlyacid resistant, flexible system.
Adaptalok fittings are available in 2 basic forms, namely fixedthreaded fittings in a wide range of thread forms or those comprisinga polyamide (Nylon) body with an integrated nickel plated brassthread or coupling.
The latter type incorporate an inherent swivel feature allowing elbowversions (pages 18 - 19) to be positioned easily reducing thepossibility of damage due to sideways movement of the conduit.
Swivel Adaptalok fittings can be MADE TO ORDER – MTO – tomeet a particular specification of thread or coupling.

Super low fire hazard (SLFH) Type PK conduit offers superiormechanical protection and can also be used with Adaptalok,Adaptaseal or Adaptaring fittings. Alternatively, extremetemperature performance requires the use of Type PK fittings.
Overbraided SLFH Type PKTC conduit meets high EMI screenspecifications whilst Type PKSS conduit is overbraided toincrease the security of installations in sensitive or high riskPublic areas, e.g. in underground communications or lighting.
Overbraided enhanced low fire hazard (ELFH) Type PRTCadds high EMI screen to its Fire performance approval forRailway rolling stock or underground areas, whilst Type PRSSprovides increased abuse resistance in similar applications,e.g. station platform or CCTV installations.

CONDUIT CUTTING TOOLSKWIKCUTSWINGCUTROTOCUTCUT-VICE
ToolsKWIKCUT
Kwikcut is the ideal cutting tool for non-metallic conduits (PA, PR, PI, PP,KFL, KFS, KFM & XF) up to 32mm.
CONSTRUCTIONKwikcut comprises a Teflon coated tool-steel blade supported in a toughnylon handle.
CUTTING INSTRUCTIONSPlace the conduit between the cutting blade and lower support, squeeze thehandles and rotate the conduit for a clean, easy cut.Spare blades are available.
SWINGCUT
Swingcut is a versatile vice and saw combination tool which facilitates aneat, square cut for liquid tight and pliable conduits between 10mm and32mm. Six to one leverage advantage provides a strong cutting action.
CONSTRUCTIONMade from diecast and hardened steel, the Swingcut comprises a clamp, saw blade (at right angles to the clamp) and operating handle.
CUTTING INSTRUCTIONSPlace the conduit in the vice and secure. Move the operating handlebackwards and forwards whilst applying increasing pressure to thesupporting handle.Hardened captive spring loaded retaining pins make blade replacement easy.Spare blades are available.
ROTOCUT
Rotocut offers a simple but effective method for cutting 20mm and 25mmS, SS, SP, LFH-SP and SN conduit types.
CONSTRUCTIONIts rugged diecast body incorporates a recessed guide, clamping pin, squeeze lever, blade and cutting handle.
CUTTING INSTRUCTIONSAdjust the clamping pin so that the conduit is just held in the recess.Squeeze the lever and body whilst rotating the cutting blade. When theblade appears on the inside of the conduit, release the pressure andremove the conduit. A simple twist will then separate the two parts. Wherethe conduit is covered, the covering can be cut prior to separation.Spare blades are available.
CUT-VICE
Cut-vice offers the ability to produce a clean cut for conduit sizes 16mm to40mm.
CONSTRUCTIONIts rugged diecast body incorporates an integral handle and conduit guide. An adjustable clamp secures the conduit to the body.
CUTTING INSTRUCTIONSPlace the conduit along the vice body and tighten the clamp. Holding theconduit and integral handle together, insert a hacksaw blade into the guideand cut. For braided conduit, wrap adhesive tape around the cutting point to securebraid. Remove tape after cutting.

PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS
The following pages enable you to selectAdaptaflex products which best fit the purposeintended and are designed to help meet yourproduct liability obligations over the lifetime of theinstallation.
To select the most appropriate Adaptaflex systemfor any given application match the performancecriteria required to the relevant tables on thefollowing pages.
Performance criteria used in this table are:
Bending to EN50086 Flexible and pliable conduits can be bent by hand.Flexible systems may flex frequently throughouttheir life and are suitable for both static anddynamic applications.Pliable systems are intended only for staticapplications.
FlexibilityDependent on ease of bending and minimum bendradius without failure.
Fatigue LifeThe recommended maximum number of flexingcycles to avoid failure, dependent on temperature, bend radius and frequency of movement.
Torsional CapabilityDegree of resistance to conduit damage caused bytwisting.
Minimum Dynamic Bend Radius @ MinimumTemperatureThe recommended minimum inside bend radius atthe minimum temperature to EN50086. Fatiguelife in dynamic flexing applications is dependentupon bend radius, frequency of bending, temperature and the chemical environment.
Minimum Temperature to EN50086The minimum operating temperature defined bythe bending classification.
Minimum Static TemperatureThe recommended minimum operating temp-erature in static mode.
Maximum Temperature to EN50086The maximum operating temperature defined bythe bending classification.
Maximum Long Term TemperatureThe recommended maximum operating temp-erature in static mode.
Ultimate Compression StrengthFinal resistance to deformation under compressiveload.
Ultimate Tensile StrengthA combination of final conduit tensile and fittingpull-off resistance.
Abrasion ResistanceAn indication of resistance to rubbing against othermaterials.
UV ResistanceAn indication of suitability for external applicationdependent on resistance to degradation caused byexposure to UV ie. sunlight.
Non-Flame Propogating to EN50086Self-extinguishing within a given time once a firesource is removed.
Halogen FreeGiving off < 0.1% Halogen acid gas when burnt.
Fire Performance (see key on page 35)Systems combining various levels of high flameretardancy, low smoke density and toxicity in theevent of fire are classified as Low Fire Hazard(LFH), Enhanced Low Fire Hazard (ELFH), InherentLow Fire Hazard (ILFH) or Super Low Fire Hazard(SLFH).
EMI Screen @ 1MHz (see on page 41)
are classified as EMIScreen, Enhanced EMI Screen or High EMI Screendependent on capability to reduce electromagneticinterference (EMI) in the frequency range 0.1MHzto 1000 MHz.
System IP Rating to EN50086 (see definitions on page 39)The resistance of an assembled system to theingress of solids and liquids, dependent on thecombination of conduit and fittings.
The point of entry into adjoining equipment mayrequire independent sealing to maintain the systemIP rating, see sealing washers on page 32.

CHEMICAL RESISTANCE
To assess the chemical resistance of an assembled system:
■ from the Materials Key, compare the material of the conduit &fittings selected, against the main chemical of concern in this chart.
■ the least suitable material determines the overall chemicalresistance of the system. Phone the Adaptaflex Infoline for otherchemicals, concentrations and temperatures.

Information based on nominal 20mm conduit size
In 1995/96 the new European standards for flexible and pliableconduit systems (BS EN 50086-2.3 & BS EN 50086-2.2)were published by BSI.
This is the first European standard for such conduit systemsand has been written to conform to the Low Voltage Directive(LVD) and the Construction Product Directive (CPD).
EN50086 is a performance standard which identifies keyproduct characteristics (detailed below). For each of thesecharacteristics there are recommended tests with associatedperformance classifications.
The adjacent table and key allow you to check productsuitability in line with the EN50086 performanceclassifications.
Compression Strength (Performance Classification 1)Resistance to deformation under compressive load.
Impact Resistance (Performance Classification 2)Resistance to brittle fracture and deformation under impact.
Minimum Temperature to EN50086 (Performance Classification 3)The minimum operating temperature defined by the bendingclassification.
Maximum Temperature to EN50086(Performance Classification 4)The maximum operating temperature defined by the bendingclassification.
Bending to EN50086 (Performance Classification 5)Flexible and pliable conduits can be bent by hand.Flexible systems may flex frequently throughout their life andare suitable for both static and dynamic applications.Pliable systems are intended only for static applications.
Electrical Properties (Performance Classification 6)Metallic systems defined as electrical conductors or insulators.
System IP Rating to EN50086 (Performance Classifications 7 & 8)(see definitions on page 39)The resistance of an assembled system to the ingress of solidsand liquids, dependent on the combination of conduit andfittings.
The point of entry into adjoining equipment may requireindependent sealing to maintain the system IP rating, seesealing washers on page 32.
Corrosion (Performance Classification 9)Metallic systems defined by their resistance to corrode underexposure to water vapour.
Tensile Strength(Performance Classification 10)Resistance of a system to a short term tensile load at ambienttemperature.
Non-Flame Propogating to EN50086 (Performance Classification 11)Self-extinguishing within a given time once a fire source isremoved.
Suspended Load Capability (Performance Classification 12)Resistance of a fitting to a high continuous tensile load atmaximum temperature.

IP RatingsThe degree of ingress protection is indicated by two digits followingthe letters IP. The first refers to protection against the ingress of solidobjects, the second refers to protection against the ingress of water.
Cable Carrying CapacityUK wiring regulations, BS7671 recommend that the total cross sectional area of the sum of the individual cables shouldnot exceed 40% of the cross sectional area of the conduit. The nominal cross sectional area of single-core, stranded,PVC insulated cables is provided as a guide only. Other cables may have different dimensions.

Example: Is SP20 suitable for five 4.0mm2 & two 1.5mm2 cables?
■ The total cross sectional area of the conductors is 5 x 14.5mm2
(for 4.0mm2 conductors) + 2 x 7.6mm2 (for 1.5mm2 conductors) = 87.7mm2
■ The cross sectional area of SP20 is 3.142 x [ Inside Diameter ]2 = 224mm2
2■ % of conduit cross sectional area [ (a) ] x 100 = 39.1%
(b)This is less than 40% therefore this conduit is suitable for this combination of cables.
The easiest way of installing cables into flexible & pliable conduit is to simultaneouslydraw in the cables with the conduit in straight condition before installation. UK wiringregulations prohibit the use of flexible or pliable conduit as an earthing conductor. Pleasephone the Adaptaflex Infoline for further guidance.

As a worldwide supplier of conduit systems, Adaptaflex has an expanding portfolio ofinternational approvals obtained from the various organisations indicated below.
The table shows the relevant approvals obtained for each conduit system.
Since approvals are constantly being added, audited & updated, please phone the AdaptaflexInfoline for the latest details.
GlossaryFire Performance
Adaptaflex has introduced a set of symbols to help the user specify conduit systems forinstallations where fire performance is of particular concern.
Each symbol encompasses a range of properties relevant to the high specification materialsused in the construction of the conduit.
They are in an ascending scale of performance from Low Fire Hazard (LFH) featuring zerohalogen through to Super Low Fire Hazard (SLFH) featuring zero nitrogen. In addition,Inherent Low Fire Hazard systems (ILFH) are classified as being all metal systems.
For more detailed information on fire performance classifications, see the key on page 35.

The European Directive on Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) 89/336/EEC requires any electrical equipment/installation to be constructed so that if neither produces Electromagnetic Interference (EMI), sufficient to interferewith radio and telecommunications equipment, nor is itself affected by EMI.
All conduit systems are considered electrically passive since they do not produce or are affected by EMI. However,Adaptaflex has introduced a new range of “Screen Systems” which offer a cost-effective alternative to individuallyscreened cables within applications where cross talk has no adverse effect.
Additionally the user gains the mechanical advantages of a conduit system and a simplified means of modification;e.g. addition, substitution or replacement of cables in an existing cable run.
The graph below shows the results of different types of 20/21mm diameter screened conduit, with its appropriatefittings, tested by ERA Technology, to IEC96/2:93 (Radio frequency cables Part 1). Tests measured attenuationin decibels (dB) over the frequency range covered by the EMC Directive, 0.1 to 1000MHz. The test data allowscomparison with other screened conduit systems, and cables tested to IEC 96-1.
