European Regulation EC 261/2004 stipulates that airlines must pay up to €600 to all passengers that experience long delays, providing it was not caused by ‘circumstances beyond their control’. This regulation also covers flight cancellations, overbooking’s and denial of boarding.
EC 261/2004: WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR YOU? The Regulation of Flight Delay Compensation (EC) No 261/2004 is European law which sets out the rules regarding the assistance and compensation to passengers in the event of long delays, denied boarding or cancellations.
When are you eligible to claim compensation?The following 4 points will help determine your claims validity:
Was the flight within the last 6 years?
Did the flights take off or touchdown take place on an EU airline?
Was your flight delayed more than 3 hours?

Which circumstances are not extraordinary?
You CAN claim compensations for delays due to:
Lateness of Airline staff, e.g. cabin
crew or pilots

Which Circumstances are extraordinary?
You CANNOT claim any compensation for delays occasioned by circumstances that are beyond the control of the airline such as:
Acts of sabotage or terrorism
Security risks Extreme weather conditions
Political or Civil unrest
Hidden manufactures

Industrial action (strikes not related
to the airline)

How much can you claim?The compensation amount depends on the delay dura-tion and the distance flown, irrespective of the cost of your ticket:
