Summertime! What’s more American
than the 4th of July and fireworks?
(Add in some apple pie, ice cream
and golf and we’re all set!) Colby’s
favorite part of summer is that his
bedtime is later. He likes to negotiate
the time based on it getting dark out-
side. For some reason the same
negotiations don’t apply in the winter.
July 4th is his favorite night because
he gets to stay up past dark and
watch the fireworks.
As parents we try emphasizing to Colby
that preparation is as important as suc-
cess. our goals being to have him work
hard to achieve his goals. Colby invoked
this thought process to tell me he should
start preparing for the late night fireworks
by staying up past dark in advance of
July 4th. He’s a pretty good negotiator
when he wants to be, but i wasn’t buying
it. That is until he came up with a good
preparation idea….night golf!
Colby’s rationale was that night golf
closely resembled fireworks. Glowing
orbs would be launched high into the sky
to oohs and aah’s. i had to agree with
him, so off to RiverCrest! We waited until
the Bagroom Staff had left for the night,
and then grabbed an electric cart so no
one would hear us out there (other than
our oohs and aahs.) Colby wanted to
drive the cart (which he may or may not
already have experience doing), but since
it was dark outside i took the wheel.
We skipped the first hole to avoid being
spotted from the nearby houses. We
began our late night adventure on Hole
#2, a Par 5 measuring 528 yards from the
tips. Since we couldn’t see anything
anyways, i didn’t tell Colby we were play-
ing all the way back. All we could see
were our golf balls, a rough outline of
trees on the left and the mound on the
right. We decided on a friendly 9-hole
match for breakfast the following morn-
ing.
Colby took a practice swing which nei-
ther of us could see. For a little games-
manship, i told him his swing never
looked better! With the endless confi-
dence of a 7 year old, he thanked me
and stepped up and striped it. it’s pretty
cool to see a glowing golf ball flying into
a pitch black sky. We both let out appre-
ciative oohs! After i teed off we drove up
and quickly found our golf balls. it’s
amazing how easy it is to find a glowing
golf ball at night!
Knowing the course we could approxi-
mate where the green was and how far
away we were. We both ended up just
short of the green, my ball in 3 shots,
Colby in 4 shots. Still unable to see
where the pin was located Colby walked
up to the green until he found it located
on the back left of the green. He came
back and relayed the location to me. i
chipped first and hit a nice shot in that
general direction. Colby went next and
hit his shot a little thin and the ball went
racing onto the green towards the pin.
His ball came to an abrupt stop after
making a clanging noise, letting us know
he hit the pin (another ooh from Colby, an
aah s*#t from me!)
When we walked up to the balls on the
green we found my ball a foot from the
hole, and Colby’s ball leaning up against
the flagstick but still above the lip of the
hole. Colby blurted out, “That’s a par for
me!” i told him not so fast. under the
definition of Holed, a ball is “holed” when
it is at rest within the circumference of
the hole and all of it is below the level of
the lip of the hole. The good news for
him, under Rule 17-4 Ball Resting
Against Flagstick the player may move
the flagstick and allow the ball to fall
below the lip and be considered holed.
However, if in moving the flagstick the
ball rests on the lip on the hole and does
not fall in, then it is not considered holed.
So Colby lightly pushed the flag away
from the ball so the ball would fall in the
hole, which it did for a 5.
Surprisingly, Colby did not give me my
one foot putt to halve the hole. He
removed the flagstick and his ball from
the hole. i stroked my putt and picked it
out of the hole as it was still rattling
around. Colby, then told me that i broke
a rule, my ball should not be considered
holed because it was not “at rest” below
the surface of the hole since he could
hear it still rattling around. i was ready to
launch my own fireworks at that point!
But i invoked decision 16/5.5 which cov-
ers this exact situation and says that the
ball is holed. The words “at rest” are in
the definition to make clear that if a ball
falls below the lip and thereafter bounces
out, it is not holed. But since this ball did
not bounce out as i was picking it out of
the hole, it was deemed to be holed.
We had a fun night of launching “fire-
works” all over the golf course. It was a
great way to prepare for the real fireworks
on the 4thof July! Colby ended up win-
ning the match, but he still needs more
practice staying up late as he was sound
asleep one minute into the car ride home.
He quickly went from aah’s to zzz’s.
Happy 4th everyone!!

MEDIAN BALL CHIPPING WITH A TWIST
• Today we are going to play with 11 balls but you can use as many as you want as long as
it is an odd number.
• Play the shots from the same spot.
• drop the ball each time and play it as it lies, choosing places to play from that give you a
variety of difficulty.
• To make the game more difficulty hit the shot onto the green from a variety of distances
and from a variety of lies: deeper rough, fairway, first cut. For another level of difficulty
choose a variety of clubs to complete the game.
• once you have played all eleven shots, take away the five balls that are closest to the hole.
• Measure the distance of the next closest ball to the hole, the median ball and record it in
your practice session log.
The twist in this game is that you have to putt the ball from the median distance. if you
make it you can quit the game. if you don’t make it you have to start over. The game is not
complete until you make the median golf ball into the hole with an up and down.
it is important that you perform your full pre- and post-shot routine for every shot. Read the
lie for each shot and carefully determine the required club, trajectory and landing spot. Take
your time to visualize the shot, try the right amount and react to the target. use your post-
shot routine to actively build your self-image and learn from your mistakes.
When playing this game, you should be paying full attention and trying your best to shoot a
low score.
A median ball distance of less than 3 feet is excellent. More than 6 feet is poor, and you will
save a lot of strokes quickly by working more or harder on your short game. The idea of
having to make the putt is to add some pressure to the game and perform under that pres-
sure. Give it a try and let me know how it goes!!!
Always record your score in your practice session log, and try to beat your best score each
time you play this game. The competitive edge is crucial if you want to improve your game!
