THE OTHARMANN EMPIRE THE AEGYPTIAN LANDS

‘On their side are the resources natural and artificial of a mighty

Empyre, strength immeasurable, experience and practise in fighting, a veteran soldiery and a habituation to conquest.’

(Micheal B’Orc - The Illustrated Londinium Tymes)

The reams of Knowledge held in common by the races of Valon grow very thin and

unreliable when discussing the mysterious and vast reaches of the Othari and their

Empire. One of the few access points to this exotic realm, for foreigners, are the

shores of Aegypt and the lands of this Territory are ruled by a distant powerful

Sultan. What follows here is a summary of those things held by many to be truthful

in recent times.

From his magnificent palaces in the teeming city of Isstanbal The Sultan ‘Selheem The Magnificent’ rules his Empire absolutely. The bulk of the day-to-day running of Otharmann Provinces being organised by the Viziers, their authority is second only to the Sultan. The lengthy time of journey by camel train from Province to Province ensures a large degree of autonomy for a Vizier. Each Vizier has his power under Sultan Selheem's permission in his own lands, to ensure the collection of taxes and the defence of those lands. This authority extends to trade and the assigning of posts in the administration of his Province. In times of war the Vizier is also responsible for assembling the forces required to campaign. In the case of Aegypt, this territory on the fringe of the Empire is administered by the Vizier Al-Bulud. Under the Vizier come the Beys, or semi feudal rulers of Aegyptian descent, they each contribute and receive bribes differently depending on their influence. At times the streets of Aegyptian towns are filled with scenes of plundering and assassination if the position of the Vizier is weak. The rebel Halfling Warrior Beys bear testament to this. Loyalty to the Sultan is ensured by the presence of contingents of the Kings of Battle, Janissaries of the highest calibre sworn by oath and handsome pay from the great Isstanbal treasure house to their glittering leader. Aegypt under the dominion of Al-Bulud is one of the least densely populated parts of the Empire and one of the less settled by the Othari. After a brutal war of conquest during The Third Age of Valon – The Darke Age - the troops of the Sultan ‘Murhatt the Grim’

subjugated the Mamaluke Halfling tribes, under their leader Al-Gori, who had been squatting in the Aegyptian ruins for centuries. The capital of Aegypt is the city of Kairoh rising from the sands surrounded by the many oases that are a product of the labour of thousands. Little else is known of the settlements away from the river valley, out in the vast empty deserts the town of Babrezza, home to the training grounds of the Storm Riders, is the furthest point south to which the Othari will travel. Beyond that are scattered wild Halfling tribes of the Naal and a vast emptiness patrolled only in the sparsest way by the flying Warriors of the Sultan’s Storm Riders.

Othari Warriors and commoners alike have a long established respect for the ruins of Aegypt; some might call it fear by measure of the tales told to babes in arms. It was obvious to the original conquerors of Aegypt that the Halflings were not the architects of the gigantic Pyramids and colossal figures that surrounded the valley in the shadow of the mighty Nihile River. Few efforts have been made to open these tombs and other such structures and when asked of the few attempts carried out, all Othari will merely shake their heads in sorrow at the loss of life. As a result the City of Monuments, known by the Aegyptian Halflings since time immemorial as ‘Aalakads-naar’, is empty and it is forbidden to transgress the limits of the ancient Sultan’s domain. Around the time when the Law of Wylde Magick was annulled and the armies of the Ferach began their wars of conquest, the Otharmann Empire was facing its biggest external threat in living memory. Those Provinces of the Empire, which met the

outskirts of the Witchlands around the Blaake Sea, were invaded by the legions of the Star Wraith’s Undead. This clash of arms became known as The Defence of the Khans. The bitter struggle that followed exposed many weaknesses in the forces of the Othari and, on several occasions, major battles were lost before a single shot was fired. The ranks of the Sultans’ Army were riddled with corruption caused by the plundering and misuse of money among the various Viziers of the Provinces resulting in poor or non-existent training of their Janissaries. The corruption was at its worst in the units of hereditary Household Warriors many of these extended ‘families of fighters’ turned out to have no military background whatsoever upon arrival at the front. This corruption was so widespread that it threatened the whole Othari people and led Sultan Selheem to make two major changes in his way of ruling. Firstly to seek the counsel of all the other nations at war with the Star Wraith and to pay them to train Othari in the Continental Style of War. The result of this was the formation of cores of Askari soldiers, each unit being led by an officer from a foreign race. Secondly the Sultan created his personal army of Janissaries called The Kings of Battle, from the finest of the existing Janissaries in the old Army and placed them in number all around the Empire.

Although the casualties were vast the huge manpower of the Otharmann Empire was a decisive factor against the Undead. Conditions in the desert were demanding for Zombies and Vampyres alike and Othari proved difficult to reanimate in the heat. The forces of the Star Wraith made some gains however and, despite a brief peace, the war continues to grind on. The notion of the Otharmann Empire as the Ailing Empire of Valon, which had been gaining credence since the start of the Black Powder Age, was proved to be premature. Though in military terms the Othari lag behind the rest of Valon, the majority of their troops still semi feudal, they have shown remarkable tenacity in ensuring the integrity of their lands against aggressors. Circumstances could have been very different but for the strength of will shown by Sultan Selheem and the reforms that he enforced, despite the threat of rebellion and civil strife these created in his Realm. As with all reforms there are those who do not wish to be changed from their ways. In the case of the reforms of the Otharmann Empire made by Sultan Selheem those powerful rogue Viziers who opposed the re-centralisation of power and the imposing of the scrutiny of the Sultan’s Janissaries in their Provinces turned into Mercenaries and Corsairs. These Corsairs and hired swords are a source of constant embarrassment to the Othari as they constantly proclaimed themselves to be acting for the Sultan, lending weight to any claim these traitors have to authority. Indeed, until the soldiers of Mordred and those of Albion set foot in Aegypt these ruthless profiteers were the only contact that the majority of races in Valon had with the ‘Otharmann’ Empire. These Mercenaries still use the Sultan’s flag when on their campaigns so that the brilliant white crescent moon and sanbid on a blood red background is known across Valon as an instrument of terror. These symbols adorn the standards of the Empire’s own Janissaries and the ships of the sultans fleet as well as those vessels of the Corsairs, though both are now mortal enemies. To use the name and flag of the Sultan falsely is punishable by execution. Among those most hunted for this offence is the traitor Abu-Saul Wohaar a former officer in the Army. As yet his Deserter allies in Obidiah's Army have protected him from the wrath of Sultan Selheem.

On the high seas the Otharmann Fleet along with the Corsairs are a constant thorn in Mordred’s side. Sultan Selheem has also instructed his vessels to hunt down the Corsairs and at times to assault the ships of the line belonging to other nations who come too close to the coastal Provinces. Although the organisation of the Otharmann army varies in each Province it can be said to compose of the following troop types on almost every occasion. These rules complement and in places replace those in the Slaughterloo Rules. IRREGULAR INFANTRY This is a new troop type it represents Warriors of skills but without training in manoeuvre. At all times the Unit must try to be as

spaced out as possible (as wide as it is long) they cannot arrange in any formation (except square) and they count as a column for shooting purposes. The robes of these Warriors are a variety of bright pastel colours, blue, purple, red and white though some do have specific uniforms.

BOWS

The table below is for use in Slaughterloo where units armed with Bows are concerned. The standard Infantry Bow used by the Othari is the first line on the table and all Cavalry Units armed with bows, unless otherwise stated use ‘ Horse Bow’. (NB. All codes in the following pages refer to Slaughterloo codes. The Othermann Empire miniatures are now also available in Flintloque codes. See www.alternative-armies for details.)

SPEARS

When a unit armed with spears is charged, they strike simultaneously with the charger and all models in the spear unit count as 1.5 points in combat. After the initial contact that enemy Cavalry make with the Spear armed unit, treat Spears as Muskets with Bayonet. This advantage – value of 1.5 points - is usable only in the first instance the unit is charged. OTHARI

JANISSARIES–

SPEARS - 57500

Regular Guard Infantry armed with spears & shields (Min. 8 - Max. 20 models in a Unit). These are the Sultan’s own Janissaries and are few on the battlefield but they make their number count! Janissaries are found together, usually in their own Division and while it is not unknown for them to mix with other Troops, it is rare. These Kings of Battle are glorious in their black breastplates with gold trimming, they have coloured cloth bound around their helms. The rest of their uniforms are white, pure like their loyalty.

OTHARI JANISSARIES – BOWS - 57501

Regular Guard Infantry armed with bows (Min. 8 - Max. 20 models in a Unit). They are few on the battlefield and the finest bows in Aegypt! The Kings of Battle are glorious in their black breastplates with gold trimming, they have blue cloth bound around their helms. The rest of their uniforms are pure white.

HOUSEHOLD WARRIORS - SPEARS - 57503

Irregular Infantry armed with spears (Min.9-Max. 25 models in a Unit). These are the Warriors of a single extended family bringing their own arms to the field. The quality of the equipment depends

on the wealth of the family. These troops form the bulk of the Otharmann Empire’s Army. They wear clothing of their own choice; in bright pastel colours. HOUSEHOLD WARRIORS

SWORDS -57504

Irregular Infantry armed with swords (Min.9- Max. 25 models in a Unit).

When these units use a Charge Move to enter combat they add a +1 to melee. The finest Household Warriors fight with the Sanbid and Scimitar: true Othari weapons of war! These troops are deadliest when charging. They wear bright pastel colours.

Irregular Infantry

(16-36 models in a unit).

You MUST have at least one of these Units in your Division. Three sergeant models have to be nominated from the Unit to keep the Al-Hazrad in order every time you roll for officers. THE ASKARI - 57511 NOTE: Askari are troops trained by Officers or Advisors from outside of the Otharmann Empire in the Continental style of warfare. Each race of trainers brings a different style and point cost to the troops they produce. Askari uniform consists of black tunic with cuffs and collars of a colour chosen by the Unit leader. Headwear is a cream colour and lower robes are various bright pastel shades. (Units have 12-24 models unless Light Infantry when 6-12 models) ORC TRAINED

OTHARI FLYING CARPETS

THE STORM RIDERS - 57530

Cavalry (Unit size

6 - 12 models) Their Carpets are precious and richly decorated while the clothes

worn by the Riders are coloured entirely at the unit leader’s choice and are usually garish.

Othari Storm Riders are elite troops mounted on flying carpets. They are armed with the same bow as some Horse Archers. They have limited range, but can be lethal closer to the enemy. However, it is in Melee that the Storm Riders excel. They are treated as if they were Light Cavalry in most respects. It takes two casualties to remove a model, they count as two attack points each in Melee, and can be used as rear guards if all other forces are in retreat. Fire from this unit is treated as normal, firing at one attack point per model, using Horse Bow ranges as above. Firing at the unit suffers no unusual penalties, as they do not count as skirmishers, and can be targeted normally by most ground units. In Melee, they count as two attack points each, and the square formation is ignored, as it provides no protection from air-borne Cavalry. Ground based units may only engage them in Melee if they themselves are attacked by the Storm Riders, or if the Storm Riders are still engaged against another ground based unit. Aerial units may attack them as normal. Storm Riders can disengage from Melee with a ground based unit after one turn of Melee.

OTHARI CAVALRY - HORSE

57532 & 57533

There are two types of Othari Horse Cavalry.

(Cavalry Unit size 6 -12 models). These are the Riders who mock the enemy by seizing their mounts. Fast and cunning, speeding into battle, these Riders are beginning to challenge the superiority of the Gnoll Riders. Much to their chagrin! It is rumoured that the Sultan himself rides a horse!

Uniforms are robes in many pastel colours, white horses are much sought after.

THE DERVISHES - SWORDS - 57508

Irregular Infantry (8-20 models per unit) NOTE: There can be only one unit of Dervishes in a Division due to their fanatical nature and lack of cooperation with others of their kind. These Warriors can masquerade as another Infantry Unit of the same or more figures (and must use that Unit’s movement rate etc), when fired upon or when engaged replace that unit on the table. This replaces their ability to hide in other units. These Warriors wear little, some have short trousers, most no shoes. Normally bareheaded, occasionally wearing turbans They are armed with a very sharp pair of Sanbid Swords or with a single curved scimitar.. CAMELS LANCES – 57534

Cavalry (Unit size is 10 models maximum). NOTE: Camels have two attack points in melee and require two wounds to kill. These Riders from the desert sit atop their notoriously foul tempered camels and look down on the world. Some of the tallest Cavalry on Valon these Lancers are good Warriors and while more at home guarding trading caravans they can prove decisive. Riders are always in white so that they are not stepped on!

Irregular Infantry (16-36 models). ‘Tiny and terrible foes’ sums up the proud Aegyptians. After centuries of domination these Warriors retain their own identities and while weak at a long range, their vicious short swords (bayonets) make them lethal close in. They despise the apparent barbarity of their cousins in the Albion HEVC and carry themselves with more dignity. In flowing robes sometimes hooded these fighters are always dressed in bright light colours.

AEGYPTIAN HALFLING LANCERS - HOUNDS - 57536

Light Cavalry (Unit size is 8-12 models maximum). Riding Saluki Hounds and armed with lances these small fighters protect themselves with shields while closing with the enemy. Dressed in turbans with flowing robes of different pastel shades these units are a common sight in any Halfling formation. The hounds should suffer no movement penalty over loose sand, which would slow horses.

AEGYPTIAN HALFLING - KITTENS

CATAPULTS

Light Infantry (6-12 models). The ‘Kittens’ or the Missile Light Infantry of the Aegyptians are armed with Catapults. Named after the creature whose sinew and carved teeth are used to manufacture their Catapults, these Warriors fire lead shot on their foes. The same shot used by the Matchloques of the Janissaries. Dressed normally only in a turban and loincloth and wielding their Catapults, the‘Kittens’ deliver a nasty scratch.

KHAMSIN –”

THE FIERY WIND FROM THE DESERT This warrior had been known to me once but he is known to me no more as I am not of the Desert people. Khamsin’s tribe of wandering nomads were destroyed and scattered by foreign forces that had come to Aegpyt in search of ancient gold. These foreigners knew his name but have since forgotten it as they forgot what they had done to his people. The tribe returned to the sands that spawned them, not he though he lived on for revenge. Foreign troops appeared in the morning lying dead in the sands, the night whispered his name. So the peasants started to call him the “Khamsin” which is the name that’s given to a vicious wind from the deep deserts that kill Othari and animals alike and has been known to be so strong it will destroy houses and level villages. Khamsin survived the destruction of his tribe and because of his skill rose to command a number of loyal Othari soldiers, who like Khamsin had lost faith in the Vizier and perhaps even the Sultan himself. He is a warrior beyond compare a general beyond reproach and a killer without hesitation. He’s becoming a demi-god to some of his men especially after he has been seen to shrug off sword blows and arrows have bounced of his chest, as if it was hard as iron. Khamsin is a true Otter he prides himself on this lore and skill in arms. His only comfort his hatred for foreign forces that destroyed his tribe and family (they were mixed mercenaries of many nations in pursuit of hidden gold contained in tombs out in the reaches of the sands) he see the foreigners to be a pox and a plague on his land so he’s decided to lance their boil!

FLINTLOQUE RULES Khamsin is a Veteran/Guerrilla armed with a sword, Ferach duelling pistol and bow (plus antique breastplate hidden under robes raising his defensive factor to 3 but he still has 2 wounds like a normal Othari) - Khamsin costs 40 pts Hatred of the traitor Abu-Saul= If Khamsin is fighting in a skirmish in which Abu-Saul Wohaar is involved he must fight the Deserter over any other opponent and will attempt to close for Melee combat with Abu-Saul as quickly as possible. Hatred of foreigners = Khamsin will not fight on the same side as non Othari or Halflings. When fighting against non Othari or Halflings all draw close combats count as first level pushbacks. Excellent general = After both sides have been deployed Khamsin can redeploy once again. (following the same deployment rules as before). Ancient hidden breastplate = The Breast plate worn by Khamsin is a family treasure but it is damaged from a previous engagement and after taking a ‘hit’ in combat the player commanding Khamsin must roll a D10 on a roll of 1 the breastplate is shattered and his Defence Factor drops back to 2.

USAK MANZARRA

THE DISTANT DEATH BRINGER

It is often the last sound heard by an Elven soldier in the Aegyptian sands, the whip crack of a lead ball impacting on flesh. As the Ferach body falls lifeless to the yellow grains, his brothers in arms look around and aim their muskets at an assailant unknown. Another of the Elves falls, his neck destroyed by an impact heard a second later, now panic reigns and the soldiers fire their muskets blindly into the dunes around them but it is too late. Usak Manzarra has struck and silently vanished once more into the endless desert. Manzarra is a veteran of the Otharmann Campaigns against the Undead, the wars known as the Defence of the Khans, his family killed and re-animated by stinking zombies in the heat of the Blaake Sea region. After the disastrous defeat of the Sultans Army at the battle of Rinmick, Manzarra developed his unique way of fighting. To strike from a great distance. Originally a member of a Dervish Unit Manzarra realised that though he was a brave and skilled Sword’s Otter he could not hope to defeat all the Undead that lurched endlessly toward him and his fellows. After narrowly avoiding the fate of the rest of his unit he shamelessly dropped his ancient scimitars and ran for safety. To defeat the Undead he would need a Jeziel, and not a normal one either, one of supreme distance in its range. His chance came in the form of a dead Ostarian Jaeger, for it was true that the misguided Dogs were at that time in league with the Star Wraith, the Dog clutched in his lifeless hands one of the most strange weapons to be found on Valon. It was a hunting rifle a weapon hardly seen outside Eastern Valon, especially in the realm of the Sultan, it had jammed and become fouled in the swirling sand winds, it owner cut down by multiple arrows. Manzarra knew the value of the weapon in time, he enlarged its bore and protected its mechanisms from the ravages of the deserts. Now its power and distance in killing has made Manzarra a worthy ally and terrible foe, his Jeziel is as famous as he is and has a name all of its own. The Othari call it the ‘Byrrat Vifty’ in honour of very large rounds which it fires, equal in size to the golden Byrrat Vifty coin given to Assassins as pay. It is a creation of dedicated skill and sweat, necessary to remove the Empire’s enemies and preserve its owner. Though Usak Manzarra blends with the mass of the Othari Warriors he is a creature of fate, enemies of the Sultan will die never seeing the face of their destroyer.

Byrrat Vifty: The Weapon of Usak Manzarra. This weapon can only be used by Manzarra and if he is killed it is lost. Manzarra must be stationary for a turn before firing otherwise increase range by one banding. The weapon takes two turns to reload after each shot. THE CURSE OF THE JEZIEL. Due to the nature and uniqueness of the Byrrat Vifty, its ammunition must be made by Manzarra himself, a time consuming process. As he is always in combat he often runs out of shot and must rely on flight or additional arms given to him by the unit of which he is a current member. After every shot (not including the first) roll a D10 on a roll of 1 or 2 he has no more ammunition for the rest of the scenario, this roll is made before the reloading process begins.

THE OTHARI IN FLINTLOQUE FLINTLOQUE POINT & WEAPONS FOR OTHARI

THE OTHARMANN CAMELRY (FLINTLOQUE) (ADDITIONAL RULES)

Sand - Camels may ignore penalties for movement over scrubland, light sand and only move one column to the left if moving over deep sand. Horses – Due to the foul smell of camels, any non-Othari horse which comes within 20cms of a camel ( for the first time only) must make a Morale roll. This roll is carried out exactly as if the rider was ‘hit for the first time’, with all normal modifiers. OTHARMANN CAMELRY JEZIEL The Janissaries and Camelry of the Otharmann Empire are equipped with incredibly long muskets, known by them as a Jezeil. Cut off from many of the civilised nations of Valon, the Othari use of black powder has been slower than that of other nations. The longest and most powerful Jeziel is the Camelry Jezeil used by riders in the Sultans Camel Cavalry. This firearm is so long that it may only be used by a specially taught warrior when mounted on his camel as the barrel must rest on a special leather pad on the camels head, needless to say after a few shots the camel is extremly angry! The user of a Camelry Jeziel suffers a 15% modifier if targeted at night by an enemy, as the burning match will show the rider clearly in the dark. This weapon takes two Turns to load and must be stationary when loading AND firing.

THE USE OF BOWS IN FLINTLOQUE

The Bow is an ancient weapon that has existed for an eternity before the advent of musket and even the earliest matchloque jeziels. It is a cheap and reliable weapon and in the hands of a skilled Othari it can be quite deadly, its rate of fire being appreciably faster than the process of biting cartridge and using a ramrod. Though a bow has a rate of fire faster than a musket its hitting power at medium and especially longer ranges is weaker than a lead ball. Undead and larger foes such as Zombies and Ogres have been known to continue to fight in battle against the Othari even though their torsos look like porcupines under the hail of arrows! When using a Bow in Flintloque these additional conditions to the rules apply. A miniature using a Bow may fire one shot per Turn, EVERY TURN, as the speed of Reloading a bow is much faster than a musket. The ranged fire of a bow is treated exactly as that of a black powder weapon, such as aimed fire, except for this rule.

THE EMPIRE’S CONDITION It is now the case that the Otharmann Empire is facing some of its greatest ever threats. The Undead continue to press on against Othari lines in the vicinity of the Blaake Sea testing for weaknesses. These engagements are very costly in terms of troops for both sides and serve to tie down a vast amount of material that, unknown to the greater part of Valon, could be put to great use elsewhere. For the Othari the Forces sent to combat the Star Wraith have meant that other Provinces such as Aegypt have been left vulnerable. As a result of this weakness the Province of Aegypt is in a state of turmoil. Native Aegyptian Halflings have seized this opportunity to revolt against Othari rule and had been holding their own in battle until the arrival of the Ferach at the Port of Allakzandrea. The Mamaluke leader, Aheli Bey, wishing no conflict with the Elves sent Emissaries, as did the Vizier Al-Bulud to convince them to leave Aegypt. Both parties

were ignored and many ignominies piled on them before being sent back to their peoples in shame. Then the Ferach campaign to conquer the Province began. Battles of the initial weeks went well for the forces of Mordred his Marshals columns easily defeating the antiquated arms sent against them. Kairoh was captured and partly burned in a protracted siege that saw some very vicious fighting from street to street. It was then that the luck of the Elves began to run out.

ABERCRUMBY & MENETO The Elf transport fleet, lightly protected by a few fighting vessels, was caught at anchor by Albion ships of the line and destroyed; trapping the Ferach Army in Aegypt. Although a few regiments escaped Field Marshal Meneto resigned himself, after the Battle of the Nihile, to his predicament and continued to push south in search of his objective, the Rusetta Stone. Rumoured to reside in the ruins of Rhaased in Aalakads-naar the Rusetta Stone is supposed to possess the power to translate the hieroglyphs of the Ancient Sultan and release Magicks not seen in millennia.

Among the few to escape Aegypt and return to Armorica were a group of surveyors, artists, botanists, and zoologists carrying the manuscripts of a great work written on the order of Mordred. The ‘Descriptions de Aegypt’ is soon to be published and will reveal the secrets of this exotic land to the rest of Valon. Askari and Veteran Janissaries then began to arrive in numbers to engage the Ferach Army, stopping its advance at clashes such as the huge Battle of the Pyramids. These Warriors gathered from great distances by Sultan Selheem have ensured the survival of the Province at least for now. The arrival of an Albion expeditionary force under General Abercrumby has also been a source of constant pain for Meneto and has seen him defeated at encounters such as the Battle of Abbuker. Although the Sultan is displeased at the presence of the Orcs on his land he is prepared to use them for the moment.

The war for ultimate control of Aegypt continues and Sultan ‘Selheem the Magnificent’ is determined to be victorious.
