Why Video? Why Video?

• Video is king (of Instructional Technology anyway…)

• The distribution of video assets has blown open on platforms such as YouTube and MySpace — an estimated 13 hours worth of video get uploaded to YouTube every minute.

• The opportunity both to a) prompt the systematic distribution of high-quality video and b) make that distribution take place in truly “openly” accessible environments using open has yet to take place.

Cisco Systems says that in 2012, Internet

video traffic alone will be 400 times the

traffic carried by the U.S. Internet

backbone in 2000. Video-on-demand,

IPTV, peer-to-peer video, and Internet

video are forecast to account for nearly 90

percent of all consumer IP traffic in 2012.

• Relevance of medium -- the upcoming generation of our Extension end-users “sees the world” through video

• Cost is forcing us to virtualize our efforts more

• Video production and hosting is accessible to everyone regardless of skill and comfort level. Obtaining quality content is now the more challenging task. This is where Extension’s advantage is most apparent

• Balancing accuracy and authority of content (academic) versus need to reach audience more quickly and with an informal voice

• Video is flooding virtual communities (Facebook, Ning, etc.)

• OSU already has the infrastructure available to support video

• Many of the topics we focus on lend themselves to video
