flipside's pepcon presentation - migrating content into the digital platform
DESCRIPTION
This presentation's objective is to educate and empower Philippine educational publishers who are or have yet to convert their content into ebooks. It includes advice regarding the technology, ebook formats, how to distribute in the e-textbooks in the Philippine market, and recommended ebook apps. This deck was meant to be delivered during the 1st Philippine Educational Publishers Association (PEPA) Conference on Sept. 19 at SMX. The typhoon Fung-Wong (or Mario in the PH) prevented me from delivering it live. However, this deck was also distributed to the participants during the event and to the members of PEPA. I am now making it available for everyone's reference. May it be useful to you.TRANSCRIPT

ADVICE PROS CONS
SELL IT ON ANY AND EVERY EBOOKSTORE
It’ll be everywhere, minimal distribuIon cost.

If you want to sell your ebook only to Filipino general consumers…

ADVICE PROS CONS
SELL YOUR EBOOK ON AN EBOOKSTORE THAT TARGETS FILIPINO CONSUMERS (e.g., Flipreads, Buqo, etc.)
Homegrown ebookstores have payment methods other than credit cards. Mostly only one format: EPUB
Local ebook market is not mature yet = ROI will take a while
If you want to sell your ebook to a captured audience (e.g., school clients, etc.)

What DRM doesQuestions Answers
Can I send my ebook file to a friend?Yes, you can send the file, BUT your friend won’t be able to open the file bec. it’s under your account.
If I have more than one device, can I also have a copy of the ebook in those other devices?
Yes. You can have a copy of the ebook in a maximum of 6 devices, as long as all these devices are under your account.
How long do I keep my ebook? You get to keep your ebook in perpetuity, unless the publisher stipulates that the ebook license expires at a certain time.
Can the DRM be broken?Yes. All DRMs can be broken, if you really want to. But few people willingly break DRM if convenience and price are addressed. Sh

A Note About Interactive Ebooks (EPUB3 format)
ShiOing to Ebo
oks
File Format Pros Cons
EPUB 3
• Is an internationally recognized interactive ebook format
• Can support embedded audio & video, interactivity such as drag-&-drop, tapping, coloring, etc.
• Can be fixed-layout or reflowable
• Not yet supported by ACS5, but will soon be supported by ACS6.
• The only readers that support most of the features are iBooks and Kobo, both of which are retail stores. Purchase has to be through a credit card, and local textbook publishers do not distribute through these stores
• Very limited available content. Most local and intl. publishers have not converted into this format yet because of issues with distribution.
