Disaster body lists 404 flood-prone areas in Davao

THE local disaster coordinating body has listed 404 flood-prone areas in Davao City, including subdivisions, sitios and puroks.

But operations officer Pepito Capili of the Davao City Disaster Coordinating Council (DCDCC), in Thursday's interview at the DCDCC office at Central 911, was quick to add that there is nothing alarming regarding the city's condition.

Despite the normal conditions, however, Capili said they are "reminding residents in low-lying... or flood-prone areas to be watchful."

Capili said this in reaction to reports that massive floodings have occurred in some provinces in Mindanao, including the nearby Compostela Valley, Davao del Norte and Davao del Sur provinces.

Of the city's 404 flood-risk areas, Capili said 139 are in District 1, 138 in District 2, and 127 in District 3.

Under District 1, City Poblacion District has 40 flood-prone areas while Talomo District has 99. For District 2, Buhangin District has 61, Bunawan District has 40, Paquibato District has 25, while Agdao District has 12.

For District 3, Toril District has 38, Tugbok District has 42, Calinan District has 37, and Marilog District has 10.

Barangay Talomo Proper has the most number of flood-prone areas at 38.

"These are according to the seismological mapping. We recorded the susceptibility of the areas in the city, or the likelihood that water will gather in these areas as these are low lying," Capili said.

Capili said he wishes that Dabawenyos would "listen to authorities when advised to evacuate their areas when needed."

"There have been times like during the Jade Valley incident in 2002 na we advised people to leave their houses," Capili said, adding that these people said they were used to the water rising, some of them even unfazed by waist-deep floods.

Capili insisted, however, that once the water reaches eight or 10 feet, the residents have to be evacuated.
