It was a busier than usual summer for your Society. In addition to hauling water into our home gardens, many of us were doing the same thing for 3 different municipal gardens and various sections of the front Fieldcote gardens. What a dry summer! It also affected the landscaping that we judged for the Trillium Awards. Even our number of entries in the Flower, Vegetable & Photo show was reduced this year. Our Society held 2 unusual events this summer. First, was our highly successful Dream Garden Tour and Tea as a fundraiser for the Fieldcote Museum expansion fund. The Society turned over 90% of the ticket sales to Fieldcote and presented Curator, Lois Corey, with a cheque for $5500. (photo p. 6) A huge THANK YOU to Mavis Baker and her committee and to Lois Corey and the Fieldcote Museum staff. Our Second big event was at the OHA Convention in Kitchener. Our long-time member, Sheila Oddy , was presented with their Award of Merit. (see p. 3) Congratulations to Sheila for a well-deserved honour. Our regular monthly meetings resumed on September 20th. I hope you enjoyed speaker, Paul Knowles. Our next meeting is October 18th with speaker Dr. Greg Thorn, on ‘The Secret Lives of Mushrooms.’ Bring a friend and join us! In 2017 we’ll lose five of our directors or co-directors. Three volunteers have stepped up to replace some but we’re always looking for new faces and talents. (See p. 6 for a list of the volunteer opportunities.) Don and Donna Foster have been with us for 30 years in a variety of positions. They’ll be greatly missed when they move to Brantford in the spring. This will be the Society’s 56th year. Please contact me if you’re interested in assisting with our 2017 activities. Bob Wilt

FlorascapeHello Fall!

Our long-time member, Sheila Oddy, was presented with their Award of Merit.

‘In an English Country Garden’ FLOWER, VEGETABLE AND PHOTO SHOW

2

by Lorraine Held, Co-Director

“In an English Country Garden” was the title of our Annual Flower, Vegetable and Photo Show and Afternoon Tea on Saturday August 20. We had 141 excellent entries, although our numbers were certainly down from last year likely due to the heat and drought this summer. The OHA judges and the photo judge were impressed with the quality of our members’ efforts and enjoyed the Tea with the volunteers. Sixty-six guests visited and enjoyed the Tea and the awards presentation. Many thanks go to Councillor Lloyd Ferguson for making the time to be with us and for assisting in the presentation of the trophies listed below. Betty Howitt and her committee received donations of 38 door prizes and 10 raffle prizes from 36 community donors. (list p. 3) We thank them all for their generosity. Rosemary Anstey and her well-organized team prepared sandwiches and desserts for the Tea and did a great job of serving them to our guests. Many thanks also go to the volunteers who helped prepare for the show, set up the hall on Friday evening and helped with the take down at the end of the day. Special thanks to all who entered specimens in the Show in spite of the extreme gardening conditions this year. (And special thanks to Co-Directors of the Show, Lorraine Held & Betty Howitt, and Social Director, Rosemary Anstey, for their tireless efforts. editor)

Sheila Oddy given OHA Award of Merit (as submitted by Bob Wilt for OHA Trillium Newsletter, edited) Every Society needs at least one Sheila Oddy! Over the years Sheila and I have volunteered together on many tasks. Sheila is always thorough and accurate but I’ve also learned that she is artistic and a knowledgeable gardener.

In just 17 years with our Society, Sheila has done just about every task asked of her: secretary, treasurer, co-president, membership archivist, co-director of both the Trillium Awards and the Flower, Vegetable & Photo Show. And Sheila has also shown her considerable photographic skills by speaking to our Society about the gardens that she and her husband have seen around the world. You name it Sheila has done it!

Sheila has adapted to the newer technologies too. She consistently surprises us with her manage-ment of copious amounts of data but also her deft artistry in creating posters, booklets & programs.

But at the core, Sheila is an avid gardener along with her husband, Ted. She has donated hundreds of plants to our Plant Sale. Again, if your Society has a Sheila Oddy as a member, you’ll be fine. She can do anything! Congratulations, Sheila, on a well-deserved award!

Municipal Gardens submitted by Sue Groleau Thanks to our crews of gardeners that kept our gardens going in this harsh summer. Garden clean-up will take place on a day at the beginning of October. If you can help please contact Sue Groleau at 905-648-2964

ANCASTER HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY NEWSLETTER INSERT OCT., NOV., DECEMBER 2016

Trillium Awards 2016 Submitted by Carol Howe & Sheila Oddy

The Trillium Awards Ceremony were to be held in the grounds of Fieldcote Museum on August 16th but a forecast storm necessitated a change to the Old Town Hall. The committee quickly swung into action with emails, phone calls and hand-delivered letters to get the word out. Thanks to everyone for their patience as one of the largest audiences ever crammed into the old town hall. 325 properties were judged; 125 Trilliums awarded with 26 going to first time winners. Two Diamond Trilliums were awarded. Receiving were Marian & Jim English and Joe & Lesa Saur. We congratulate them on keeping their garden looking beautiful for us all to admire for 15 years. The residents of Ancaster are giving more and more effort to maintaining a high standard for our community. The cut off mark for an award this year was 91%. The Awards were presented by our Councillor Lloyd Ferguson and former Mayor Bob Wade. Thanks to the 46 judges (9 of whom were new this year) for their time and efforts. Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to keep their properties beautiful in spite of the hot, dry summer.
