F lor Ecuador tendrá nuevos re-tos: fundamentalmente acom-pañar a nuestros productores,

Dear readers,
F or Ecuadorian floriculture, 2015 will be a year of challenges, challenges and opportunities, es-pecially in the consolidation of the main export
markets. Flor Ecuador will face new trials: mainly, supporting our producers in different international markets with timely information and broadcasting the qualities of Ecuadorian flowers.
The international scene and the economic crisis suf-fered by our second largest export market prompted a disappointing end for our exports, which fell by 1.2% in 2014. The dynamics of the Ecuadorian flower industry is tested: it will have a significant support from the Government which, to some extent, will help the companies’ liquidity, but investment must also be encouraged, as this is critical and should not stop. The United States is our largest trading partner, purchasing 42% of our exports. Therefore, we are working to constantly improve the quality of our products in such a demanding market. We must continue to focus our efforts on improving costs within the entire value chain of our product, and to this end, we hope to establish new sustainable parameters in the regulations of Flor Ecuador Certified, parameters that will contribute to improving costs and to the social and environmental sustainability of our business.
Thus, the sector maintains its view to achieving con-tinuous improvement and to keep contributing to the Ecuadorian society through corporate responsibility. This issue touches on the importance that this sector gives to the improvement of the socio-environmental conditions of its workers.
Flor Ecuador Certified is the guarantee for global consumers that the beauty of the Ecuadorian flowers that they purchase has been achieved in compliance with legal, social and environmental regulations. The certification becomes our challenge and commitment to our customers for broadcast and mass production. I invite you to learn more about this certification in the different issues of this magazine, as well as on our website www.florecuador.com.

The socio-environmental scope of FlorEcuador Certified® entails that those who bear this certification have met the following objectives and requirements:
FlorEcuador Certified® is validated by internationally qualified third parties, such as SGS, Bureau Veritas and ICEA Ecuador. In order to ensure the impartiality of the audit, meeting international ISO standards on au-dits issues that are regulated by the Ecuadorian laws, these certifiers are accredited by the Ecuadorian Accred-itation Service (formerly OAE) under the Guide ISO / IEC 17065: 2012 “Conformity assessment - Require-ments for products certifying bodies, processes and services”.
Currently, there are 173 farms in the FlorEcuador Certified® program, of which 102 are certified farms and 71 are in the certification process. This represents 60% of hectares of flower production in Ecuador.
We hope that with the structural changes that have taken place in recent years with regard to the certification, both flower growers and the international market look for an alternative of sustainable flower production, in compliance with envi-ronmental, social and labor laws.
Beginning last year, we opened the certification to non-members of Expoflores in order to encourage re-sponsibility and unity in the sector, so that we are acknowledged not only by our quality but also by our awareness of environmental, social and labor issues.

second half of the year: exports fell by 17%, mainly due to the 30% fall of the Russian market in that period. The worrying economic situations of both Europe and Russia, together with the appreciation of the dollar, lead to a contraction in exports of Ecuadorian flowers.
In particular, the final balance for the year shows that the Russian market was the most affected. Ecuadorian flower exports to that market fell by 9% in FOB value and 6% in tons. Meanwhile, the European market presented a final balance reflecting a 2% decrease in tons, in contrast with a 5% growth in FOB value in 2014.
When reviewing the balance for 2014, based on the above figures, we find that the flower sector faces a change of scenarios in the international arena, with a higher concentration of export volumes to our main markets and – at the same time – seeking replacement markets for our exports to Russia.

We were motivated to visit this farm as soon as we knew that they had won the sixth place in Great Place to Work® out of the 16 best companies in Ecuador, and it was is the only com-pany in the floriculture sector to re-ceive this award. Their CEO says that his team, which strives permanently, deserves all the credit for this honor.
GPTW is a measure of the work environment that is based on the perception of employees about their colleagues, bosses and the company. The Work Environment Index for La Rosaleda was 91.7%.
The team who greeted us told us that they began to focus on the work environment and to ensure the welfare of all its employees in 2007. They themselves feel as if they were working at home.
¿How did they accomplish this?
Although they are aware of the work that lies ahead, they say that one of their secrets is teamwork and sharing problems.
The support from supervisors and managers by listening to people in order to understand-instead of just relying on their perceptions – made it more feasible seek strategies to feel comfortable and at ease.
“Now people are proud of the com-pany, they are not afraid to ask their boss if they are doing their job right. There is a better relationship between staff and workers.”

The relationship with the community is also very important. As neighboring communities are low-income neigh-borhoods, the farm offers free bus transportation from the nursery of the farm for the children in the com-munity. Also, the physician not only sees the employees of the company, but anyone in the community who needs him.
For Expoflores and all our partners, it is a challenge and a responsibility to keep the reputation of the Ecua-dorian flower sector up; this has been earned through the efforts of many years of work, of countless people who give their lives with dedication and commitment to see this activity flourish.
Our congratulations to La Rosaleda and its entire team for this achieve-ment, and we invite other flower farms to remember that for a business to be sustainable and successful, it needs its people to be committed, motivated and comfortable with it.

Ecuador has maintained a positive trade balance with the United States in recent
years. Trade liberalization between the two countries began with the creation of the GSP program (Generalized System of Preferences), which established a tariff exemption on 4200 manufactured and semi-manufactured agricultural products (including flowers). The ATPA (Andrean Trade Preference Act) was established in 1991, favoring 5697 products for which tariffs were lifted.
The program under the name Andean Trade Preferences Act and Drug Eradication Act (Atpdea), whose preferential treatment cov-ered approximately 6100 products, was renewed in October 2002, and has been renewed every year start-ing on 2006.
Both the Atpdea as the GSP expired on July 31, 2013. Adam Namm, US Ambassador in Ecuador, talked about a possible renewal of these instruments, saying: “ultimately, the United States Congress shall decide on the renewal of GSP and Atpdea”. However, “regardless of what Congress decides on these tariff preference programs, which apply to several countries in addition to Ec-uador, the United States values our business relationship with Ecuador and hopes to achieve even deeper ties”.

According to the Central Bank of Ecuador, total trade in 2014 amounted to a little over USD 20 billion, this is, about six percent more than in 2013. The United States imported about 44% of Ecuadorian exports, more than any other country. In 2014, yet again Ecuador had a trade surplus with the United States. “Beyond the numbers, this strong and growing

Trade between the two countries continues to grow, despite the US 2008 crisis, as there is a clear economic recovery in 2014. Ambas-sador Namm remembers what Pres-ident Obama, in his speech of State of January 21, said: “Today our economy is growing and creating jobs at the fastest pace since 1999. In the last five years, our businesses have created more than 11 million new jobs. Wages are rising again. “ Ambassador Namm ensures that, as the US economy continues to strengthen, US consumers continue to buy quality products from Ec-uador, such as roses, chocolate and other items.

The central courtyard of the Luis Edmundo Martinez pic-torial museum exhibited a giant bouquet, where roses prevailed. These designs complemented the Forty-fifth Painting Exhibition at the “Luis A. Martinez” Painting Room, with works by various Ecuadorian artists.
