Floriculture Crops 2000 Summary Agricultural Statistics Board

    April 2001 3 NASS, USDA

Wholesale Value of Floriculture Crops Up 12 Percent

The Floriculture Crops questionnaire was redesigned for the 2000 survey. The most significantchanges involved the creation of more than 30 additional breakouts of crops, and moving some priorcrops into the Other categories. This realigned the crops collected to their relative importance insales. Consequently, some data tables are not comparable with 1999. Separate sections were alsoadded for Herbaceous Perennials and Propagative Materials. A copy of the questionnaire is in theback of this report, as is a more complete explanation of changes in Survey Procedures.

All Value of Production: The 2000 wholesale value of floriculture crops was up 12 percent fromthe revised 1999 valuation. Contributing almost half of the increase, however, was the addition ofPropagative Material sales for the first time. The total crop value at wholesale for all growers with$10,000 or more in sales is estimated at $4.57 billion for 2000, compared with $4.10 billion for1999. California was again the leading state with crops valued at $858 million, up 8 percent for theyear. Florida was up 19 percent from 1999 with $798 million in wholesale value. These two statesaccounted for 36 percent of the total value. The top five states--California, Florida, Michigan,Texas, and Ohio--accounted for $2.42 billion, 53 percent of the total value.

Number of Growers: The number of growers tallied to 10,873 in 2000, a decline of 6 percentcompared with 1999's revised count of 11,625. The number of growers with sales of $100,000 ormore dropped from 4,793 to 4,764 for 2000. The largest size group,$500,000 or more, was theonly one to have more members in 2000 than 1999; all other sales groupings were down from theyear before.

Growing Area: Total covered area for floriculture crop production was recorded at 911 millionsquare feet, down 1 percent. Greenhouse space accounted for 57 percent of the total covered areawith 524 million square feet, down 2 percent from 1999. Film plastic structures decreased 3 percentto 357 million square feet. Fiberglass and other rigid plastic covers were up 3 percent for the year

while glass greenhouse area was virtually unchanged. Shade and temporary cover constituted theremaining 388 million square feet of covered area, down 1 percent from 1999. Open ground usagetotaled 36,868 acres, 5 percent over 1999's total.

Hired Workers: The average number of hired workers employed on operations in 2000 increasedto 14.7, up from a revised 13.6 in 1999. A total of 8,624 operations reported hired workers duringthe year, compared with 9,471 a year earlier. Overall, 79 percent of the operations used some hiredlabor, compared with 81 percent in 1999.

Cut Flowers: The wholesale value of domestically produced cut flowers lost 1 percent in 2000,totaling $427 million. Californias portion reached $286 million, 67 percent of the total cut flowervalue in the 36 surveyed states. Individual flower data were collected on eleven additional cutflowers while four were dropped into the Other unspecified category. Pompon Chrysanthemumsshowed the largest price increase and Standard Carnations and Gladioli prices were down. The topthree valued cut flower categories were Roses at $69.4 million, Lilies at $58.6 million, and Gladioliat $32.2 million. The number of cut flower growers dropped by 23 percent to 503 during 2000.

Potted Flowering Plants: Potted flowering plants value totaled $781 million, up 3 percent for theyear. California accounted for 18 percent of the categorys total value. Poinsettias, which make up$237 million of the category, were up 5 percent in total value from 1999. Three of the remaininglisted plants recorded value increases for the yearOrchids, up 26 percent; Florist Azaleas, up28 percent; and Florist Chrysanthemums, up 4 percent. African Violets and Easter Lilies showedlower values for the year. Potted Florist Roses and Spring Flowering Bulbs were collected for thefirst time.

Cut Cultivated Greens: Cut cultivated greens were down 2 percent in value to $124 million in

2000. Florida, at $100 million, accounted for 81 percent of the category total. Value of Leatherleafferns, at $68 million, was up 5 percent from last year. Other cut cultivated greens decreased10 percent from a year earlier. The number of growers increased by 8 to 245 for 2000.

Propagative Material: A section devoted to propagative floriculture plant material was added tothe 2000 questionnaire. Total value of sales of material for cut flowers, potted flowering plants, annual bedding/garden plants, herbaceous perennials, foliage, and cut cultivated greens were$243 million during 2000. Propagative material for annual bedding/garden plants accounted for44 percent of the total, or $107 million. The largest single group of producers was 210 for annualbedding/garden material.
