Our next training session will focus on the actual FAIR-FS assessment. The goal is that by the end of the session, you will have increased knowledge of these areas.

2Whats New?FAIR 2009FAIR-FSFormat 1-on-1 with EST or AIR Requires paper test kit 1-on-1 with AIR Computer-administered and adaptiveTasks Limited number of items and tasks Items targeted to students ability More oral language tasksComprehension 6 grade level passages per grade 26 passages available, spanning a wider difficulty rangeScore Types Provides probability of reading success Also measures growth in important skillsDiagnostics 17 tasks to target instruction 17 tasks administered on computer, eliminates need for paper test kit3

With the previous version of FAIR teachers utilized the computers to test students, but they also had to use manipulatives such as vocabulary picture cards and letter tiles for various assessment tasks. Now all parts of the test are only available on-line. There is no pencil and paper version of the FAIR-FS. A welcomed addition are more tasks that address oral language. Many primary teachers will be thrilled with the fact that for testing comprehension there are now 26 passages available for use with students. This will be beneficial when testing stronger readers. Also, students are guaranteed not to receive the same passage twice within the 3 assessment periods. Another enhancement with the FAIR-FS is that in addition to calculating the probability of literacy success, the new FAIR-FS also measures growth in important skills. This growth is actually quantified in the form of an ability score. We will talk about this score later. As mentioned before, all tasks are completed by the teacher or the student on the computer so there are no additional testing materials needed.

The FAIR-FS will be available every school day. There will be no lockdown periods. This means that if you receive a student mid-year who did not take the FAIR in another Clay County or FL school, you can give the FAIR assessment to determine the strengths and needs of your new student. 4
