Circle of 100 Friends We bring to you an incredible opportunity to help reduce animal suffering. Florida Voices for Animals (FVA) is poised with the opportunity to create a tremendous educa-tional impact in this area, which we find extremely encour-aging. FVA was incorporated in 1989 as a 501 (c)3 non-profit charity dedicated to ending the exploitation and suffer-ing of non-human animals. Our mission is to educate others on what actions they can take to reduce animal suffering.

Just three months ago, we employed animal activist and en-vironmentalist Nikki Benoit to help FVA expand our volun-teer base and increase our presence in the community. We have challenged her to increase membership, organize vol-unteers, create committees to help improve activism, organ-ize and promote fundraising opportunities, and assist with many new and current projects to educate the public about adopting a cruelty-free lifestyle.

We have given Nikki a rather challenging task to organize our volunteer base and raise much needed funds to conduct our educational campaigns.

Nikki is making tremendous progress in achieving our goals. She leaflets at USF on a regular basis, organizes outreach events, submits grant applications and speaks at schools re-garding the horrors of factory farming and benefits of be-coming vegan.

We have devised a three year plan in which our goal is to raise $100,000 to ensure the success of our campaigns. We are asking one hundred people to donate $1,000 to enable us to reach our goal of $100,000. We believe that this goal will guarantee the future stability of FVA, thus reducing the suffering of thousands of animals.

Please help FVA continue to reduce the suffering of animals through our educational campaigns by donating $1,000 and becoming a member of FVA's "Circle of Friends." With your help, we can reach our $100,000 goal and improve the lives of animals throughout Florida.

Thank You, Florida Voices For Animals ============================= Correction to the last newsletter (April-June 2008) article on “Feral Cats Find New Friends”. It was written by Cathy Unruh. In The News No Downers in the Name of Safety The USDA is considering a rule which will prohibit the killing of downer cows at slaughterhouses, accord-ing to a recent story in The Washington Post. Agricul-ture Secretary Ed Schafer reasons that if downer cows aren't eligible for slaughter, there is less chance that farmers will send them to the slaughterhouse in the first place, which will in turn decrease the chances that they will be mistreated in attempts to get them to the kill floor. Un-fortunately, one of the stated goals of the USDA is to re-instill faith in the public in the "safety" of meat—which is decidedly dangerous for all the animals who die to become dinner.

.............................................. KFC Canada Following over five years of intense campaigning, numer-ous undercover investigations, and over 12,000 demonstra-tions against KFC around the world, KFC Canada will be making sweeping changes to the ways it raises and kills chickens slaughtered for its restaurants. KFC Canada agreed to this historic new animal welfare plan following seven months of closed-door negotiations with PETA. The company plans to do the following: Phase in purchases of 100 percent of its chickens from suppliers that use controlled-atmosphere killing (CAK); make a vegan faux-chicken item available at the majority of KFC restau-rants in Canada; improve its animal welfare criteria to re-duce the number of broken bones and other injuries suffered by birds; urge its suppliers to adopt better practices, includ-ing improved lighting, lower stocking density and ammonia levels, and a phase-out of growth-promoting drugs and breeding practices that painfully cripple chickens; and form an animal welfare advisory panel to monitor the changes and recommend further advancements.

However, outside Canada, KFC has yet to stop the worst abuses of chickens. Please write to KFC in the U.S. using its online comment form urging it to make the same changes worldwide that KFC Canada has made. Please also take a moment to e-mail [email protected] (KFC Canada's parent company) and thank them for raising the bar on animal wel-fare. www.kfccruelty.com

.............................................. HSUS Saves 700 in Tennessee Puppy & Kitten Mill Raid On June 27, nearly 700 pure bred dogs and cats were res-cued during a Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) led puppy mill raid. Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) Tampa Bay staff and Bay Area DART volunteers (along with other select animal organizations in the southeast region) were enlisted by HSUS to lend their expertise in the largest puppy mill rescue ever conducted in Tennessee.

Currently these animals are not ready for adoption, but shortly they will need loving and patient adoptive homes. The SPCA of Tampa will update their website within 78 hours of their availability. Please check there often for cur-rent information, more information about this raid, and other ways you can help besides adoption. www.spcafl.org

On May 22 of this year, both the House and the Sen-ate voted to override the President’s veto of the Farm Bill, allowing it to become law despite Bush’s veto. One of the most important outcomes of the passage of the Farm Bill is the increase in maximum monetary penalties for violations of the AWA. Upon the passage of the Bill, maximum penal-ties were raised from $2,500 to $10,000 per violation. Another provision of the Farm Bill places restrictions on the importation of puppies for commercial sale from foreign countries. With the passage of the Bill, puppies imported from foreign countries must be at least six months old and dogs must be determined to be healthy prior to entry into the United States. Unfortunately, it is still legal to import pup-pies from foreign puppy mills, thus forcing them to endure transport to the United States in cramped conditions, often without adequate food, water and veterinary care. Finally, the Farm Bill contains a provision to strengthen fed-eral animal fighting laws. The maximum penalty for animal fighting offenses was increased from a maximum of three years imprisonment to a maximum of five years imprison-ment. Although the Farm Bill allocated $40 billion in farm subsi-dies, the increased penalties for AWA violators, animal fighting offenses and the more stringent restrictions on im-portation of dogs from foreign puppy mills is a step in the right direction in the advancement of animal welfare laws. - Mindi Lasley =============================

Walk for Farm Animals Florida Voices for Animals is excited to be organizing the 2008 annual Walk for Farm Animals in Tampa Bay! All proceeds raised will be donated to Farm Sanctuary, a non-profit sanctuary dedicated to providing life-long care and

In 1993, under the tute-lage of apartheid protest marcher, Rev. Seth Buttle, Rob worked for three months in an urban church in South Africa. Through this and other experi-

ences, Rob is committed to a holistic non-violent care for God's creation, whether it is in opposing unjust economic situations or the brutal industry of animal cruelty that our U.S. meat industry has become. ============================= Fire At Lake Wales Pig Sanctuary

Darlynn's Darlins, Inc., a no-kill sanctuary for potbelly pigs run by Clinton "Butch" Martin and Darlynn Czerner, suffered a fire on May 11, 2008 (Mother's Day.) Their home set fire early morning and was extinguished, a second fire later destroyed

their home and most of the contents. Sadly, a cat and 3 pigs had to be euthanized due to injuries suffered in the fire.

On July 12, 2008, a group of twelve volunteers from FVA went to the sanctuary, also known as Piggy Heights, to spend time with the pot-belly and feral pigs, dogs, cats, rab-bits, chickens and other animals. The volunteers helped clean up the property using rakes, shovels, and chain saws to remove debris from the premises. Despite their efforts,

much work still remains to be done. For those who wish to donate time and/or money to this worthy non-profit, Darlynn can be contacted at [email protected]. For more information on this sanctuary, please visit their website at www.darlynnsdarlins.org.

Reviewing Books for Animal Lovers By Diane Koon Chosen by a Horse By Susan Richards A Harvest Books 2006, soft cover, 248 pages, $13.00

For those of you that love horses and realize what amaz-ing creatures they are, this book is for you. It is written by first time author Susan Richards. She has the in-credible ability to transform you into her life where you will feel like you are one of her friends. She will make you want to be her neighbor and wish you had a magical horse like Lay Me Down.

It is the true story of a divorced women with a passion for horses, who rescues a maltreated standard bred mare. She brings her home to a farm that already has three horses. One of these horses, Hot Shot falls in love with Lay Me Down and you see this love affair begin. Life on this upper New York state farm is never the same for all who live there. The story is colored with her many different friends but her best friend, part self-trained vet and horse whisperer stands out. Her responds to seeing an overworked Shetland pony on a pony-riding farm was "Lets steal her and hide her". This was a tactic she tried at 6 years old. This horse that came from a violent past showed Susan how to forgive. Her trou-bled years as a child had left her numb. Lay Me Down showed her how to experience pure kindness and complete trust. "Unlike me, Lay Me Down seemed to feel no rancor. In spite of everything, she was open and trusting of people. Qualities I decidedly lacked.....What exactly was it that en-abled an abused animal for lack of a better word, to love again?" This book emphasizes the importance of the human-animal bond. It shows a loving and caring treatment for a sweet natured horse and how she responded to this treatment, which fostered the growth of the human spirit in Susan to help her overcome her past. I can't imagine a better feeling than the unconditional love of an animal. This book was a wonderful experience for me and you will fall in love with Lay Me Down. It will give you insight into these animals we call horses and why we must treat them with respect and admiration.

During lunch on June 25th, the Prince of Wales gave a tele-vised speech to a room of over 800 captive listeners, in-cluding state law makers, CEO's, power companies, lobby-ists and activists. The company has made the right decision to end its use of eggs from caged hens in Wisconsin, Western Massachusetts, and Vermont. We are greatly appreciative of Bruegger’s history of action on this important issue. Now it’s Florida’s turn. Please call Bruegger’s and request that the company bring its socially responsible policy of not using eggs from caged hens to its Florida locations. Brueg-ger’s is an honorable company and has been very good on this issue in the past so please be very polite and respect-ful.
