A.R.I have become a major player in the South African air release and intake market. As the single largest air valve manufacture in the world with very innovative designs. A.R.I. Have since 2000 designed their version of a three stage non-slam air valve to compete in the SA market. This valve has been fully tested and has been sold in SA since 2000 with great success. Most of the major users have installed A.R.I. on numerous applications and are satisfied with its performance.

A.R.I. have also been incorporated into a water hammer program called pipe 2000, which has been developed by Kentucky University in the USA and is available in South Africa.

Also given in this brochure are actual capacity charts for the whole range of valves, which tests have been verified by French laboratories of

CESAME - Centre Atlantique de Metorologie et d essais. A.R.I. also had a few selected sizes of their air valves tested at the CSIR in 1994 as a verification of A.R.I. Published figures. A copy of this report number AERO 94/038 is readily available.

In March 2006 tests were conducted by the CSIR to establish the vacuum flow rates on the D060 HFNS. Copies of CSIR certificates “A.R.I.-2006-2/6” are readily available.

A.R.I. Have been active in the South African water industry since its inception as a supplier of air valves in the irrigation industry since the early 80s. The original plastic air valve has a unique “Rolling Seal” design which gives it a small orifice which is at least 10 times bigger than most air valves in the world. This patented design is still used in the complete range of air valves supplied by A.R.I. today and provides one of the unique technical benefits the A.R.I. Air valve has to offer.

Since 2000 A.R.I.’s three stage “Non Slam” valves for potable water are locally manufactured and designed for working pressures ranging from 0.2bar up to 40bar. The valves are coated, assembled and tested in South Africa. The very low sealing pressure of 0.2bar provides another unique technical benefit the A.R.I. air Valve has to offer and forms part of A.R.I.’s very strict testing procedure. A.R.I. makes use of a two component bronze and rubber seal. This patented design prevents distortion of the rubber and enable A.R.I. to offer a 10 year guarantee against large orifice seal leakage.

A.R.I. have developed a unique range of sewage air valves which incorporates a mechanism that ensures a constant air gap to ensure no contact between the sewage and the sealing mechanism. This has solved one of the major problems with air valves on sewage, ie. Fouling up the orifice resulting in sewage leaking to atmosphere. This guaranteed trapment of a gas pocket in the top of the air valve provides another unique technical benefit the A.R.I. air valve has to offer.

A.R.I. has established its high quality assurance standards in compliance with ISO 9002. Over the years the water industry have used “Rule of Thumb” guidelines to decide on positioning and sizing of air valves. The American Waterworks Association(AWWA) is one of the organisa-tions which published guidelines which are similar to the summarised guidelines published by A.R.I. as detailed on the following page.

A.R.I. have a design known as the D060 “Non-Slam” valve which has a mechanism that automatically switches over to a secondary smaller orifice, thereby slowing down the discharge of air and over-coming the water hammer problem. This secondary orifice has about 20% of the main orifice diameter and will obviously slow down the discharge of air and filling of the pipeline, but will ensure the prevention of water hammer. It is up to the design engineer to find the right size and balance between the two effects. If the system requires fast discharge of air with no danger of fast closing causing damage, the user has the choice with the A.R.I. design to leave out the “Non-Slam” disc.

For the above reason small orifice sizes are limited to a very small diameter (1mm diam) in most air valves. This size of orifice blocks up with small dirt particles very easily. A.R.I. s unique design of a rolling seal, overcomes all the problems designers have wrestled with over the years, resulting in an orifice of 12mm2 which is much larger than most other air valves. In addition the A.R.I. small orifice has a self cleaning effect. The reality of the small orifice is that it is the device which does 90% of the work in an air valve, but because nobody sees it work-ing (they are normally in valve chambers) its importance receives very little recognition. Yet this is the device which overcomes accumulation of air in pipelines which creates all the known problems mentioned before.

A.R.I. consists of a very large range of air release and intake valves from 16 bar to 100 bar working pressure and from 15mm to 200mm nominal bore size.

Within this size and pressure range the following types of configurations are available :

Single Orifice for Pressurized OperationAvailable in ½”, ¾” and 1”. In the A.R.I. design it consists of the rolling seal which provides an effective orifice much larger than any of it s competitors. The higher the pressure, the smaller the orifice in competitor air valves, whereas the A.R.I. orifice stays the same. This orifice also has a self cleaning effect.

Single Orifice Kinetic Valve for Pipe Filling/DrainageThese valves have large orifices to allow high flows of air out of the pipeline during filling and high flows of air into the pipe while draining and water column separation. The A.R.I. range is of the kinetic type and will stay open at pressure differentials of up to 5 meters. The new design now manufactured in South Africa has a full bore orifice and a two stage closing “Non-Slam” feature.

Double OrificeThe Double Orifice air valve is effectively a combination of all of the above functions.

All the above A.R.I. configurations of air valves are double acting in that they expel air from the pipe during filling as well as taking air in during draining of the pipeline. If single acting air valves are required which either expel air or either take in air alone, modifications to the standard designs are available.

SINgLE ORIFICE S-052-C

DeSCRIPTIOnThe D-070 combination dynamic air valve is a unique valve, operating without a float and utilizing the rolling diaphragm principle. This unique structure allows the dynamic air valve to discharge air from the water system in a controlled and gradual manner, thus preventing slam and local up-surges. When vacuum(down-surge) occurs, the valve reacts very quickly to intake large volumes of air into the water system, thus impeding down-surges and, consequently, all pressure surges in the line. The kinetic air & vacuum component of the dynamic air valve is normally closed when the line is not operating, thus preventing the infiltration of foreign particles and insects into the watersystem.

APPlICAtIonS Pumping stations, deep wells, and distribution lines. Systems that suffer from slam and local and system

surges. Sites that require a combination of means to reduce

waterhammer or surges. Sites that require an air valve with a low profile due to

lack of space.

OPeRATIOnWhen the system is charged and the pipeline begins to fill with water, air flows in the pipeline and enters into the dynamic air valve, raising the large orifice sealing assembly to the open position. Air is then discharged, mainly out through the lower chamber large orifice as well as small amounts of air released out through upper chamber pilot orifice. When the ensuing water enters the dynamic air valve, it fills the lower chamber and some of it flows up through the orifice chamber and enters into the upper operating chamber, raising the float of the pilot which rolls the sealing mechanism to its sealed position. Pressure develops inside the upper operating chamber, bringing abouta controlled lowering and sealing of the large orifice sealing assembly, which, in turn, closes the lower chamber large orifice. At this stage, only the automatic air release component continues to work and releases air through its small orifice. With a reduction in line pressure, during drainage or shut-off, the pressure in the valve is reduced and is less then the outside atmospheric pressure. The vacuum created will cause the large orifice sealing assembly to rise up into its open position, opening the lower chamber large orifice and allowing the intake of air from the atmosphere into the system.

D-070DYnAMIC AIR VAlVe PATENTED

MAIn FeATuReS Working pressure range: 2-16 bar. Testing pressure: 25 bar. Working Temperature: 600ºC. Maximum short-term temperature: 900ºC. Light weight and small with simple and reliable

operation. Interior components are corrosion-resistant. The valve body is coated with oven-baked epoxy

coating. The automatic valve releases large quantities of water

without becoming obstructed. Built-in connection for surplus water drainage at

the outlet. Extremely quiet closing. Prevents slam and causes a reduction of water surges

in the air valve and the line. Prevents the intrusion of debris and contaminants into

the system. Smooth and gradual closing unaffected by water flow.

VAlVe SeleCTIOn The valve is manufactured in dimensions of 3” with

threading/flange(optional) and 4” 6” 8” with flange. D-070 P - Available in 2”, 3”, 4” made of reinfoced nylon,

suitable for agricultural installations. Working pressure: 0.2 through 10 bar.

The valve can be obtained with FBE and other custom coating.

Can be provided with flanged in bS, ANSI, DIN, gIS standards.

The one-way D-070-I valve can be obtained that allows air only, without releasing gases into the atmosphere.

The one-way D-070-V valve can be obtained releasing air only, without allowing air intake.

For best fit, it is recommended that the composition of liquids and system requirements be defined in advance.

For selecting the correct valve and its location, use the recommendations sheet and check with the Marketing Department.

MADe In South AFRICA

This is a double orifice triple purpose air valve with full bore orifice and two stage closing action to prevent water hammer effects if too high a velocity is generated during filling of a pipeline, or at water column return.This valve is available in sizes 50mm through to 200mm in pressure rating 16 bar, 25 bar and 40 bar and is now manufactured in South Africa. The standard valve will come equipped with the non-slam disc, but if this feature is not required it can be excluded with a slight reduction in price.

This model meets all the requirements written in the specifications by the South African Water Industry and has the following additional benefits: The small automatic orifice is of the patented A.R.I. rolling seal design

which is much larger than its competition and has a self cleaning effect. The non-slam device is external to the pressure containing body and has

no seals. The device can be left out if not considered necessary and its orifice size can be adjusted to suit special circumstances, while the valve is under pressure.

The valve comes complete with all the usual A.R.I. benefits including a 10 year guarantee against leaking seals and sealing at much lower pressures than its competition (down to 2m).

Automatic component A.R.I patent, Rolling Seal Mechanism Dramatically reduces the possibility of obstruction by debris. Discharges high air flow rates up to 160m3/h. One size orifice for a wide pressure range (up to 40 bar). Self cleaning mechanism.

DescriptionThe Combination Air Valve combines an Air & Vacuum large orifice and an Automatic small orifice in a single body. The valve is specially designed to operate with liquids carrying solid particles such as sewage and effluent. The combination air valve discharges air (gases) during the filling or charging of the system, admits air to the system while it is being emptied of liquid and discharges accumulated air (gases) from the system while it is under pressure and operating. The valve’s unique design guarantees complete separation of the liquid from the sealing mechanism and provides optimum work conditions.

Applications• Pump stations for sewage, waste water & water treatment plants.• Sewage water, effluent water and sea water supply lines.

OperationThe Air & Vacuum component discharges air at high flow rates during the filling of the system and admits air into the system at high flow rates during its drainage. Water entry into the lower portion of the valve will cause the sealing of the valve. At any time during system operation, should internal pressure of the system fall below atmospheric pressure, air will re-enter the system. The smooth release of air prevails pressure surges and other destructive phenomena.Admitting air in response to negative pressure protects the system from destructive vacuum conditions and prevails damage caused by water column separation. Air re-entry is essential to efficiently drain the system. The automatic component releases entrapped air from peaks of pressurized systems in areas where the valve should be installed.Pockets of accumulated air may cause the following destructive phenomena:• Impediment of effective flow and hydraulic conductivity of the

system along with a throttling effect as would a partially closed valve. In extreme cases this will cause complete flow stoppage.

• Accelerate cavitation damages.• High-pressure surges.• Accelerate corrosion of metal parts.• Danger of a high-energy burst of compressed air.

As the system starts to fill, the combination sewage valve functionsaccording to the following stages:1. Entrapped air is released by the valve2. When the sewage level reaches the valve’s lower portion, the

lower float rises, and draws the “seal Plug” to its sealing position.3. The entrapped air is confined in a pocket between the sewage

and the sealing mechanism. The air Pressure is the system pressure.

4. Increases in system pressure compress the trapped air in the upper section of the cone shaped chamber. The conical shape guarantees the height of the air gap. This assures complete separation of the liquid from the sealing mechanism.

5. Entrapped air (gas) accumulating at peaks (where air valves should be installed) along the system rises to the top of the valve, which in turn displaces the liquid in the valve’s body.

6. When the liquid level is lowered to a point where the float is no longer buoyant, the float will descend, Peeling the rolling seal. This action opens the valve’s orifice and allows part of the air that accumulated in the upper portion of the valve to be released to the atmosphere.

7. Liquid re-enters the valve. The float rises, unrolling the rubbersealing band to its sealing position. The remaining air gap prevails the sewage from fouling the mechanism.

when internal pressure falls below atmospheric pressure (negative pressure):1. both orifices will be immediately unplugged as the floats drop

away.2. Air is admitted to the system.

Main Features• Working pressure range: 0.2-16 bar.• The valve’s unique design prevents any contact between sewage

and the sealing mechanism by creating an air gap at the top of the valve.

This air gap is guaranteed even under extreme conditions.Those features are achieved by:• The conical body shape and the external lever designed to:

maintain the maximum distance between the liquid and the sealing mechanism; so as to obtain minimum body length.

• Spring loaded joint between the stem and the upper float. Vibrations of the lower float will not unseal the automatic valve. Release of air will occur only after enough air accumulates.

• Funnel-shaped lower body is designed to ensure that residues sewage matter will fall back into the system and be carried away by the main pipe.

• All inner metal parts made of stainless steel.• Unique design of external lever prevents contact between the

sewage and the sealing mechanism and clogging by floating solids, ensuring drip tight sealing.

• Stainless steel or steel DIN st.37• Steel body coating: epoxy phenol 250 microns. High resistance

to chemical corrosion and mechanical wear and tear. (Tested in salt cell test for 1000 hours). Other coatings are available.

• The D-023’s orifice plug-disc linkage assembly is external, keeping the levers and pins outside the air valve body and its corrosive atmosphere.

This double orifice air valve has solved one of the problems with air valves on sewage, ie. Fouling up of the orifice resulting in sewage leaking to atmosphere. The valve has a unique mechanism which ensures that sewage never rises above a certain level in the valve due to the trapment of a gas pocket in the top of the air valve. The top mechanism is the unique patented rolling seal mechanism which has been modified for use on sewage. The large orifice size remains the same for the whole range of sizes available from 50mm to 200mm, whereby only the flange inlet changes in size. The valve is available in a Cast Iron body with Dacromat coating or in a complete Stainless Steel body.
