    Electromagnetic flow meters

    Electromagnetic flow metersMeasuring principle

    The meters for conductive

    fluids

The electromagnetic flow meters are ideally suited for flow measurement of all liquids

    with a minimum conductivity of 5 S/cm (20 S/cm for demineralized water).

These meters are very accurate and the flow measurement is independent of density,

temperature and pressure of the medium.

The operating principle of the electromagnetic flow meter is based onFaradays law of magnetic induction: The voltage induced across any con-ductor, as it moves at right angles through a magnetic field, is proportionalto the velocity of that conductor. The voltage induced within the fluid ismeasured by two diametrically opposed internally mounted electrodes. The induced signal voltage is proportional to the product of the magneticflux density, the distance between the electrodes and the average flowvelocity of the fluid.

The standard turbine meters of the Cx series are moreused in applications like coolant for cutting and form-ing operations, process control flow measurement, component test stands for the military, batch flowmetering, fuel consumption measurement in machines, motors and actuator aggregates, as well as for a greatnumber of R&D applications.

Coupled with an advanced EC 80 flow computer, thesemeter systems provide fully compensated precisionflow measurements. The EC 80 flow computer will lin-earize the meter within 0,1 % linearity over the entirerepeatable range.

The robust axial meters of the LoFlo series provide anexceptional repeatability of 0,25 % of reading. Whenpaired with the EC 80 flow computer, the calibrationdata is linearized to within 0,1 % of reading, allowingfor precision flow measurement over the entire usablerange of the meter. The series is not position-sensitiveand can be mounted in any piping orientation.

The custom long-life, ceramic low-friction ball bearingsystem used in the LoFlo series meets the demandsof water, hydrocarbons and cryogenic fluids. Capable ofmeasuring flows as low as 0,024 l/min, this meter is anideal solution for a multitude of applications.Typical uses include fuel injection production systems, blending of costly chemical additives, onboard fuel

The Exact series is the worlds most precise meterof its kind, providing extended range performance notobtainable with traditional single rotor designs. It isused for aerospace, automotive, industrial and OEMapplications.

The Exact series provides an extended flow rangecapability, which often eliminates the need for mani-fold systems and thus simplifies installation and lowerscosts. The meters exceptional performance, enabledby the innovative dual rotor configuration. UVC* curvesimprove the accuracy and extend the usable measure-ment flow range.

With the Exact series (standard model CDX/CDL),

flow straighteners are not required to control proc-ess fluid swirl, as the dual rotor system cancels outthe rotor acceleration effect. With flow straighteners, bearing diagnostics can be determined by monitoringthe ratio of the rotors t o detect wear or cleanliness. The Exact series meters also utilize a unique pickoffsystem, which is impervious to vibration and minimizesspace. This allows for direct coupling of electronics ona robust mount having a lower profile. Both integraland remote electronics are available to process thesignal output.

The dual rotor technology is ideal for a wide range ofapplications. The meter is designed for bi-directionalflow and high shock environments. It utilizes a robustbearing system having dual ceramic bearings on eachrotor with the internals securely locked in place, result-ing in excellent repeatability. The dual rotor meter

Nutating disc metersNutating disc meters are best suited to measure flow and volume of low and

    medium viscosity fluids.

    Measuring principle

Nutating disc meters are positive displacement meters. The top and lower part of the meterchamber are cone shaped. A ball bearing centralizes the disc between the two cones.A nutating motion of the disc is generated when flow enters the meter chamber. Completeseparation between inlet and outlet chamber volumes is always achieved by one dedicateddisc diameter line. The inlet and outlet parts of the meter chamber are separated by a partitionplate. The positioning bar forces the disc to nutate around the center axis of the chamber, driving the transmission magnet.

    Impeller meters

The series feature a six-bladed impeller design with a proprietary,non-magnetic sensing mechanism. The impeller shape coupled with theabsence of magnetic drag provides accuracy and repeatability throughoutthe flow range of the sensors. As the liquid flow turns the impeller,a low impedance square wave signal is transmitted with a frequencyproportional to the flow rate.

Impeller meters are a low cost alternative in irrigation systems (sprinklers, chemical injection

processes in water treatment, water management, etc.), in municipalities (fluoridation, pump

control, etc.) in the energy management (HVAC, building management, energy consumption

monitoring, etc.) and in the general industry (batch processes for bakeries, adding color dye to

water for textile, food processing, inks, and other color additive mixtures, adding liquid vitamins

and nutrients to feed water for livestock, automatisation in the film industry, etc.).

The series 2100 and 3000 areversatile flow monitors with alpha-numeric LC display. They can beconfigured by the user to displayactual flow, total flow or otherparameters like optional relaystatus.

The batch controller type 2200 ena-bles a large variety of flow batchprocesses which require volumetricor time based measurements.

Models 2300 and 3050 togetherwith flow sensors of series 200 orSDI series offer an excellent unitfor energy consumption monitoringin many buildings which are cen-trally controlled. HVAC processesin residential or large complexes aswell as big industrial processes canbe monitored.

All flow sensors can be combinedwith transmitters of the series 300and 500 thus enabling the connec-tion to overriding plotting systemslike SPS or simple monitors.

The series 200 flow sensor is an insertion style flowsensor constructed of metallic and non-metallicmaterials. These sensors are designed for service incorrosive and non-corrosive liquids. The series can beinstalled in pipe sizes of 3 up to 40 (special modelsup to 120) and includes a special potted version(IR models) for irrigation applications (enabling directmounting in the earth).

T-type sensors offer another model variation. Thesemodels have been designed for indoor or protectedarea applications such as HVAC, heat / energymonitoring, water cooling systems, pump control andindustrial process monitoring.

The 4000 series flow sensor is an inline, flow-throughdesign using a tangential six-bladed impeller. Theseries is available in 1/2, 3/4, 1 pipe sizes and ismolded of PVC or PVDF materials. The compact designallows the 4000 series be used in a wide range ofindustrial applications, among them the flow measure-ment of ultra pure water in the semiconductor industry.

The SDI series flow sensor offers unparalleled perfor-mance for liquid flow measurement in closed pipesystems. The impeller sensor is well suited for flowcontrol, flow monitoring and batch type applications. The flow meter can be mounted in pipe sizes of 1,5 upto 48. This sensor can be used for water applicationsor as stainless steel version for corrosive fluids at hightemperatures and pressure rates. Bidirectional flowmeasurement or battery driven systems are availableas option.

    The meters for water andwastewater

    and other fluids

Ultrasonic flow meters are best suited for flow measurement of fluids in pressure pipes as well

as in channels and semi-filled pipes.

Ultrasonic signals are alternately sent in and against the flow direction.Ultrasonic energy bursts are transmitted and received via well-definedpaths across the flow stream. The velocity of the flow is accuratelymeasured by the difference in the arrival times of signals from theupstream and downstream transducers. The transit time difference (t = t 2/1 t 1/2) determines the averageflow velocity.

The iSonic 2000 is a versatile ultrasonic flow meter. The microprocessor-based meter was designed tomeasure levels/volumes in tanks or flows in open chan-nels in combination with venturi channels, manholeflumes or effluent weirs.

The meter works according t o the Echolot principle, which means that a free outlet in the channel/pipeis required for this measuring principle. Some Q/Hrelations are already stored in the memory. A 35 point

graph can be programmed for unknown Q/H conver-sions.

When 2 sensors are in operation, the meter can beused for 2 channel measurements with separated total-izers or for differential measurement. The configurationof the flow meter is done via the front keypad or a PC.A data logger is integrated for recording measuringdata. The memory has a capacity of approx. 44 000records.

The DataControl 2500 is an evaluation device whichcan be connected to further equipments with analogor digital outputs. It is used for applications as alreadydescribed for iSonic 2000. The features and functionsare also similar to the iSonic 2000.

The L2 xx series is a 2-wire ultrasonic level sensordesigned for continuous level measurement of liquidsor viscous fluids. The maximum flow ranges are 6, 8, 10and 15 meters depending on type at a bloc distance of250 mm.

The heat meters use the highly precise ultrasonictransit-time measuring principle, for which twoultrasonic sensors are externally mounted on thepipeline and connected to the electronic. The ultrasonicsensors work alternately as transmitter and receiver, and mutually send ultrasonic signals. During thesetransmissions, the respective signal transit times of theto-and-from signals (t1, t2) are measured.

The electronic measures the difference of the transittime of the ultrasonic signals going with and againstthe flow direction t1and t2. These signals are eitherdecelerated or accelerated by the medium flow. The difference produced in both signal transit times isproportional to the flow rate and is used together withthe pipeline geometry for a precise flow calculation.

    Measuring principle

    The meters for liquids

    with middle and high viscosity

As fluid passes through the metering chamber by entering the inlet port,it forces the internal gears to rotate and exits through the outlet port. Each rotation of the gear displaces a given volume of fluid. Controlledclearances between the gears and chamber wall insure minimum leakage. As the gears rotate, a magnet on each end of the gear activates thereedswitch and forward the pulses to the display or to the pulse output.

    Oval gear meters

Oval gear meters are volumetric meters and are best suited for liquids with a viscosity

up to 5.000 mPas. (special models up to 1.000.000 mPas.). Typical applications are mineral

oils, hydraulic oils, solvents, brake fluids, coolants, transmission oils, etc.

    Measuring principle

    Variable area

    flow measurement

The variable area flow measurement method allows fluids (liquids and gases) volume streamsto be determined. A moving sharp-edged orifice is located within the piston assembly, formingan annular opening with the contoured metering cone. The piston assembly carries a cylindri-cal PPS/ceramic magnet that is magnetically coupled to an eternal indicating magnet, whichmoves precisely in direct response to movement of the piston therefore providing a visualdisplay of the flow rate.

Variable area flow metersHedlandvariable area flow meters are the industry benchmark. This product line has grown to

over 15.000 flow meters constructed of aluminium, brass or stainless steel with variable meas-

uring area for liquids, oil, water, compressed air and many other fluids and gases.

Hedlandmeters are recommanded for use in machine cooling and lubrication, packaging,

semiconductor production, high pressure and hose applications, automotive and aviation

industry as well as in the mining industry.

    in Wafer-,insertion- and in-line style

Vortex metersRacinevortex flow meters utilize ultrasonic sensing technology, allowing the meters to

perform with an extremely small bluff body. As a result, system pressure drop and meter turn-

down ratio are greatly improved. The meters benefit from a wide measuring range (up to 70:1)

and high accuracy (1 % of reading). By using intelligent electronic and HARTcommunications

Racinevortex meters are ideal for process engineering systems and refinery. The unit does not

use moving parts and requires little or no maintenance.

    Flow Transmitting transducer

    Receiving transducerShed vorticesSmall strut

Within the flow meter as flowing media moves across the strut or bluffbar vortices are also shed, but on a smaller scale. The meter transmitsan ultrasonic beam through the vortex pattern downstream of the strut. As vortices are shed, the carrier wave of the ultrasonic signal modulates. The modulation of the carrier wave is measurable and proportional to thenumber of vortices shed. Digital processing enables the vortices to becounted, and this value is converted into a velocity.

Coriolis mass flow metering is based on the physical principle that a force, the so-calledCoriolis force, acts on a mass that is moving towards or away from the point of rotation withina rotating system.

The symmetrical arranged measuring tubes 1 and 2 are vibrated against each other in the Xand Y axis. The limbs RS 1 and RS 2 of the measuring tube 1 and the limbs RS 1 and RS 2 ofthe measuring tube 2 oscillate on a circular segment in case of zero flow.

Coriolis mass meters are recommended for the direct, continuous measurement of the mass of

flowing liquids independently of their conductivity, density, temperature, pressure and viscosity

in the food, chemical and petrochemical industries. They are best suited to measure chemicals,

liquid food, suspensions, molasses, inks, lacquers, pastes, etc.
