2010This year’s programme...

With over a hundred events at different locations across the Yorkshire Dales, this year’sFestival includes an exciting range of walks, photography courses and competitions, art exhibitions, children’s craft activities, quizzes, and identification courses, all with awildflower theme. Inside this programme you’ll find full details of each event and theirlocation, helping you to discover and celebrate the wonderful wildflowers of the Dalesfor yourselves.

The Yorkshire Dales offer spectacular habitats for wildflowers and the species theysupport, from the ancient bluebell woodlands and the mosaic of flower-filled haymeadows in the valley bottoms to the wild windswept uplands with their blanket bog, hidden flushes and ethereal limestone pavement. Wildflowers in all their glory – rareor common – the Festival aims to celebrate them all!

2010 marks the International Year of Biodiversity, that’s why this year’s Festival willalso feature some of the species that depend upon the wildflowers. Look out forbumblebee, butterfly, honey bee, bug and bat events as well as talks on how you cangrow native wildflowers from seed in your own garden.

The Dales landscape needs people – people to manage it, people to care for it, peopleto value it – and the Festival aims to encourage this by offering something for everyone.

The Flowers of the Dales Festival events are run by a wide range of organisations andindividuals and the Festival is co-ordinated by the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust.

Whatever you choose to do, have a great time and enjoy the Festival.

YDMT would like to thank...

Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust (YDMT) is a charity committed to supporting thenatural and built environment, and the social and economic well-being of the YorkshireDales. Our work ranges from woodlandrestoration, countryside apprenticeships and sustainable development to tackling socialexclusion.

Hay Time is one of the Trust’s key projects. Run jointly with the Yorkshire Dales NationalPark Authority, the Hay Time project helps to conserve and restore flower-rich meadows, for which the Dales are internationally renowned. The Flowers of the Dales Festivalbuilds on this success and is funded by the National Lottery through the Heritage LotteryFund, Natural England's Countdown 2010 Fund and LEADER.

Guided walksAll of the walks have been graded so you can decide which routes you feel happy totackle and to ensure you're properly prepared.Easy - suitable for most people: short walks on well marked, even paths that may havestiles. Sturdy shoes with good grip necessary.Moderate - longer walks with some hills, stiles and uneven paths. Boots advised.Strenuous - long hill walks with steep climbs on uneven or boggy paths. Boots essential.

Flower identification guidesThe National Park Centres and other outlets stock awide range of excellent and affordable guides to thewildflowers and plants in the Dales, including abeautifully illustrated and water-proof leaflet showingthe flowers and grasses of hay meadows, producedas part of the Hay Time project. These normally cost£1 (or £2 including p&p from YDMT) but please notethat a free copy will be given to everyone who goeson a guided walk that includes a visit to a hay meadow(subject to availability).

Public transportMany events are accessible by public transport so why not beat the traffic and bekinder to the environment by leaving the car at home and using other means to getto the Dales. Or you could leave your car on the edge of the Dales and use the busor train to get to your destination. From Easter until the end of October extrasummer bus services are run especially for visitors to the Dales. Please go towww.traveldales.org.uk for transport information. Event organisers may also be ableto provide information.

What should you bring? The weather in the Dales, as any farmer will tell you, can be unpredictable. Even onsunny days, when you will need sun protection and a hat, it can quickly turn chilly onan exposed fellside so please be prepared. Depending on the event and its locationyou may need to bring a drink and snacks for short events and drinks and a packedlunch for longer events. The walk leader may not allow you on the walk if you are notproperly prepared. If in doubt please ask the event organiser beforehand.

Supporting the DalesThe Dales landscape depends heavily on the local communities that live and workhere. You can do your bit to help by staying locally and supporting local shops, restaurants, pubs and businesses as much as you can. You could also participate inthe Donate to the Dales programme. This is our Visitor Payback Scheme, where youcan pass on a donation to support the vital conservation work that ensures the Dalesremain a special place for your next visit. If you want to help, look out for the Donateto the Dales collection boxes in National Park Centres and some businesses withinthe area. You could also pay for a tree to be planted in one of our native woodlandrestoration schemes - please contact YDMT to find out more.

Have a great time but...Please don't pick any wildflowers - apart from spoiling it for other visitors, manywildflowers are sadly becoming rare and are legally protected, with heavy fines forthose caught picking them. Also please walk in single file through hay meadows, asthe crop is important as winter fodder for the farmer's livestock. Finally, please followthe Countryside Code: be safe, plan ahead and follow any signs; leave gates andproperty as you find them; protect plants and animals and take your litter home; keepdogs under close control; and consider other people. For more information please seewww.countrysideaccess.gov.uk/things_to_know/countryside_code.

What did you think? It would be very helpful if you would let us know what you thought of the Festival, soat most events the event leader will hand out 'feedback forms'. These will be short andsimple and can be completed after the event. The form will have a Freepost addressso it won't cost you anything to post it back to YDMT. At the end of the Festival, allreturned forms will be entered into a draw and the first two pulled out will win a 'goodybag' of lots of fun and interesting things. If you're not given a form but would like tolet us know your thoughts then please contact Tanya St. Pierre, Flowers of the DalesProject Officer, on 015242 51002 or email [email protected].

AccommodationAccommodation to suit all tastes and budgets is available in the Dales. Details of thoseaccommodation providers that directly support the work of YDMT are listed on ourwebsite at www.ydmt.org. Others can be found on www.yorkshiredales.org.

Of the many wonderful habitats and landscape features thatthe Yorkshire Dales are renowned for, it is arguably theflower-rich hay meadows that are the most iconic. Haymeadows are the product of years of careful managementby generations of farmers. Visually stunning and teemingwith wildlife, they are a living and vibrant link to the past.

In recognition of their importance, YDMT is publishing HayTime in the Yorkshire Dales, a book which celebrates andexplains the natural, cultural and land management historyof the Dales hay meadows. With a foreword by John CravenOBE, the book will include contributions from Dales farmers, authors such as Bill Mitchell MBE, academics with a specialistinterest, and many others. Hay Time in the Yorkshire Dalesis softback with 288 pages. It includes fantastic illustrationsand photographs, some of them decades old and neverbefore published.
