Fluvio-Glacial Landforms
Fluvio-glacial landforms are landforms
molded by glacial meltwater.
There are 2 main fluvio-glacial features;
1) Outwash Plains
2) Eskers

Outwash Plains;
• This is made up of glacial material picked up by meltwater and deposited beyond where the ice reached
• Outwash can also be deposited on top of boulder clay as the ice melts
• The outwash plain is sorted and rounded because it has been deposited by water
• The coarsest deposits (sands and gravel) are deposited first and found nearest the ice; the finer deposits (clay, silt) are deposited last and found furthest from the ice.

Eskers;
• These are long, narrow, sinuous ridges often several miles long.
• They are made of stratified glacial material (i.e. in layers) especially sand and gravel picked up and deposited by water
• They are formed by rivers inside or under the melting ice being under great pressure and so able to transport much sediment
• The sediment is deposited along the course of the sub-glacial river so that, when the ice melts and the meltwater drains away, the raised bed of the subglacial river is left as an esker
• Eskers are layered because, at different times, the meltwater river would have differing amounts of energy and so deposits varying amounts of material of different sizes.

Task 1:Using your lithosphere book answer the following
questions.
1) What 4 types of material are transported by glaciers
2) Where are each carried on the glacier?
3) Explain the formation of a terminal moraine
4) What is an erratic?
5) How is an outwash plain formed?

Homework!Due in Friday 31st August
Answer the 2000 past paper question on glaciation
This is worth 6 marks. You are asked to explain theprocesses involved in the formation of 2 landforms.
3 marks for a feature of glacial erosion3 marks for a feature of glacial deposition
Therefore, you should be mentioning 6 key pointsfor each.
Write this in your homework diary!!!
