OVERVIEWA set of coordinated events—UN High-Level Water and Sanitation
Days 2015—will take place Nov. 18–20 at UNHQ. The Final meeting
of the UN Secretary-General’s Advisory Board on Water and
Sanitation (UNSGAB) spans the three days concluding on Nov. 20
with the UNSGAB Final Ceremony. The 2nd Special Thematic
Session on Water and Disasters will be held on Nov. 18–19 and
UN World Toilet Day will be celebrated on Nov. 19.
FINAL UNSGAB MEETING18–20 NOVEMBER
Solving global water problems is central to eradicating poverty and
achieving sustainable development. The UN Secretary-General’s
Advisory Board on Water and Sanitation (UNSGAB) is an
independent body established in 2004 to provide advice while
galvanizing action on water and sanitation challenges. Under Chair,
Dr. Uschi Eid, the Board is composed of a wide range of dignitaries,
technical experts, and individuals with proven experience in
providing inspiration, impacting policy, as well as working with the
media, the private sector and civil society. After eleven years of
targeted advocacy, expert advice and consistent action, UNSGAB
is preparing for its final session. During the meeting, UNSGAB will
share its Final Report with the Secretary-General, the United
Nations System Chief Executives Board for Coordination and the
international community. The Final Report reflects on the Board’s
impact and legacy while also offering a set of recommendations for
the international community on necessary structures, institutions
and initiatives to advance water and sanitation objectives post-2015.
UNSGAB’s official Closing Ceremony on Nov. 20 is an open event
and will celebrate the Board’s contribution and work spanning more
than a decade.

SECOND UNITED NATIONS SPECIAL THEMATIC SESSION ON WATER AND DISASTERS18 NOVEMBER

major UN conferences, including the UNFCCC COP 21 “Paris 2015”
(Nov./Dec. 2015), the Humanitarian Summit (May 2016), and Habitat
III (October 2016). The session is organized by UN Secretary-Gener-
al, the UN Secretary-Generals’ Special Envoy on Disaster Risk
Reduction and Water and the High-level Experts and Leaders Panel
on Water and Disasters (HELP).
