You’re invited to the Flyway Film Festival!

The Flyway Film Festival is a four-day event featuring more than 50 fi lms, dozens of visiting fi lmmakers, and an opening night gala with fabulous food and live music. All this takes place in an intimate, welcoming environment along the beautiful shores of Lake Pepin. The seventh annual Flyway will be held October 23–26, 2014 in Maiden Rock, Stockholm and Pepin, Wisconsin.

Each year the Flyway Film Festival presents a wide variety of thought-provoking, entertaining independent fi lms. You’ll see documentaries, comedies, dramas, and short fi lms, directed by the best up-and-coming fi lmmakers across the globe.

Pepin residents Rick and Diana Vaicius founded the festival in 2008. Since then, it has become one of the premier destination fi lm festivals in the United States, attracting nationally renowned fi lmmakers and speakers. Last year, MovieMaker Magazine named the Flyway “one of America’s 25 coolest fi lm festivals.” The festival takes its name from the nearby Mississippi River “fl yway,” the route taken by the magnifi cent migratory birds that fl y through this area in spring and fall.

In addition to the four-day October event, Flyway keeps the festival spirit alive all year with monthly screenings around Lake Pepin. The new Flyway “Minema,” a 40-seat microcinema in downtown Pepin, opened with fi lm screenings in July. The series will move across the river to present the documentary Meeting Charlie Parr during Red Wing’s Fall Festival of the Arts, October 11th at the St. James Hotel.

Follow the Flyway Film Festival on Facebook and Twitter so you don’t miss an event!

FLYWAY FILM FESTIVAL 2014 | 7When I walked into Flyway’s opening night celebration, I was utterly blown away. Not just because of the talented

fi lmmakers, but because of the amazing community of locals who support Rick’s efforts, bringing food, wine and pure love. The energy there is like one big, happy family bursting with pride and enthusiasm for fi lmmakers from all over the country, welcoming them to Pepin. And there’s pie. Did I mention pie? Because there’s pie. Lots of pie. Hands down, the most humble, fun and unique festival I’ve ever attended.

— Jeanne Veillette Bowerman, writer, co-founder of Twitter’s Scriptchat and the Editor of Script Magazine

Flyway is my only must-attend festival of the year, every year. The fi lms are great, and the people you meet make it unforgettable.

— Wonder Russell, actress

Only days later, much sooner than expected, Alan returns home from his vacation to fi nd his apartment commandeered by Mat, Mat’s girlfriend, and Mat’s girlfriend’s son. Time LapseUSA | 2014 | Feature Film | 93 Min. Directed by Bradley King

Time Lapse is a sci-fi thriller that explores the possibilities of time travel via a machine that is capable of peering 24 hours into the future. When three friends discover this strange machine in their neighbor’s apartment, they are faced with a number of pressing questions, not least of which is the whereabouts of their neighbor. Realizing the potential impact of the machine, they attempt to cash in on their discovery, but when a dangerous criminal learns their secret, the friends must set aside their differences and confront the paradox of a future that is at once predetermined and entirely uncertain. King’s smart genre fi lm is a welcome addition to the thought-provoking canon of time travel fi lms. He has crafted an original thriller that keeps the audience guessing and explores questions of pre-determination, free will and destiny.

The Right JuicePortugal (English dialogue) | 2014Feature Film | 93 Min. Directed by Kristjan Knigge

Oliver, failed, bankrupt and fresh from the city, is again pursuing his fi nancial ambitions by attempting to grow oranges on an old farm. His wife Sally despairs of the appalling facilities. When Oliver discovers the land is barren for reasons that are more sinister than appear at fi rst glance, he and his neighbour Manel face unprincipled enemies in a highly amusing quest to save the valley from exploitation. In their battle, they are joined by the lovely Nesta, her beauty a foil for both Oliver and his enemies. The characters are rich and the plot strong in this well paced, multi-cultural fi lm.

Farewell to HollywoodUSA | 2013 | Documentary Feature | 102 Min. Directed by Henry Corra & Regina Diane Nicholson

In a recurring poetic image, 17-year-old Regina Diane Nicholson swings between heaven and earth on a breathtakingly high cliff by the sea. Reggie is a tomboy struggling with cancer, her parents and her dream of making a fi lm. She impresses us with her loving, strong personality and wisdom beyond her years, as well as her morbid sense of humor. Together with director Henry Corra, she is working on a portrait of herself and her struggle with her illness. The fi lm’s initial focus is on Reggie, but it quickly makes way for an escalating confl ict between her and her parents as Reggie develops a closer relationship with Henry, who takes her seriously. This fi lm is a poetic fairytale about love and death, holding on and letting go.

Wicker KittensWISCONSIN / MINNESOTA SHOWCASE

USA | 2014 | Documentary Feature | 53 Min. Directed by Amy C. ElliottOpen the box. Dump out all the pieces. And scramble for your lives. Because this is competitive jigsaw puzzling. And it’ll turn even the mildest of mannered Midwesterners into stone-cold competitors.

Every January, the top teams in the game gather at the St. Paul Winter Carnival in frigid Minnesota to determine the fastest puzzlers in the country.

Wicker Kittens invites you to choose your favorite contestants — the returning champs, the upstart challengers, the sunny family or the dark horse team with nothing to lose — and watch them try to put the pieces back together.

The Starfi sh ThrowersWISCONSIN / MINNESOTA SHOWCASE

USA | 2014 | Documentary Feature | 84 Min. Directed by Jesse RoeslerWorlds apart, a fi ve-star chef, a twelve year-old girl, and a retired school teacher discover how their individual efforts to feed the poor ignite a movement in the fi ght against hunger. Award-winning chef Narayanan Krishnan, fi ghting against the caste system in India, quits his job to begin a life of cooking and hand-delivering fresh meals to hundreds of people in his hometown. Katie Stagliano’s planting of a single cabbage seedling when she was nine years old blossoms into Katie’s Krops, a non-profi t with 73 gardens dedicated to ending hunger. Retired teacher Mr. Law battles personal health issues as he hand delivers more than a thousand sandwiches nightly to the hungry in Minneapolis. See how their impact ripples further than their individual actions.

Food PatriotsUSA | 2014 | Documentary Feature | 74 Min. Directed by Jeff Spitz

Touched by their teenage son’s battle with a foodborne superbug, fi lmmakers Jeff & Jennifer Spitz document their family’s struggle to raise backyard chickens, grow food, and transform into Food Patriots. Food Patriots features people from all walks of life who are trying to change the way Americans eat and buy food, and educate the next generation of consumers.
