OUR SMILING DEAN
In 2012 when the first MBBS cohort entered the third year, we operated 5 concurrent postings so that the
number of students for each posting will remain small and students will receive close attention by their teachers.
In 2013, when these students entered the fourth year, the complexity of operation increased as there are now
many specialty postings that they have to rotate through, such as Forensic Medicine, Dermatology, Radiology,
Otolaryngology, Ophthalmology, Critical Care, Emergency Medicine, Psychiatry, and various aspects of
Community Medicine. As not all these disciplines are available at Hospital Ampang, we have to arrange their
postings in Hospital Kuala Lumpur and Hospital Rehabilitasi Cheras. The logistic problems were immense and
often unpredictable. Thank to our resourceful and hardworking staff, we managed to get the postings organised.
Credit must also be given to our students, as many a time our undaunted would brave the erratic city centre
traffic to attend the teaching-learning activities in these locations.
These problems were also faced by students in the other three courses: Chinese Medicine, Physiotherapy and
Nursing. Transport woes reign number one in the feedbacks given by our students. We hope these could be
lessened when the three UTAR campuses in the Klang Valley come together in Sungai Long by 2015 and more
buses would then be available to ply the routes and facilitate the students to travel to the sites of teaching-
learning. Naturally, the ideal solution is to have our own teaching hospital where the teaching-learning activities
can be conducted under one roof.
The postgraduate programmes (MSc and PhD by research) are in full swing in 2013. By the end of the year, 14
students were registered, while another 16 are waiting in the pipeline as they make initial exploration under the
4
guidance of their supervisors. Under FMHS, four research centres had been established: Centre for Stem Cell
Research, Centre for Cancer Research, Centre for Research in Chinese Medicine, and Centre for Research in
Non-Communicable Diseases. The last was established in 2013 in line with the thrust of research in this area
endorsed by both the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. The Centre
for Stem Cell Research brought in the largest amount of funding among all.
Among the many research projects undertaken by our staff, one group collaborating with University Malaya
Medical Centre reported the first successful production of sustainable Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell lines
(IPSC) from osteosarcoma cells, a form of bone cancer. UTAR researchers are now the first in Malaysia to
produce a sustainable IPSC line, not just from one source of steosarcoma, but from four sources of
osteosarcoma cells. It is meaningful to all of us because it is not an easy task to establish such a cell line and
only recently in December 2012, the discoverer of this technology was awarded the Nobel Prize, indicating the
immense potential of such cell lines in the practice of personalised medicine.
The staff in the FMHS are also active in community activities during their spare time. Some of these activities
were carried out with the participation of our students. It is never too early to inculcate such readiness and
desire to help, and the spirit of volunteerism among the novices. Joint professional and community activities
continued to be organised together with Hospital Sungai Long, our immediate neighbour, and also other non-
government organisations. We look forward to more collaboration for community activities in the future.
In a recent keynote address by our Direct-General of Health, Ministry of Health of Malaysia, he expressed
concerns that workers in his Ministry tend to have a silo mentality. He encourages his staff to come out of their
comfort zones and work with others within the Ministry and outside, to be as inclusive as possible. I totally
agree with him. Whether in education, research or service, we should work with others, not just within
Malaysia, but also globally. I do urge our academic staff to make the lead in research collaboration with our
counterparts in other parts of the World. Let us not be diffident about our present status being a budding
medical institution; let us be brave to build new relationships and explore new ventures!
In 2013, we lost a great teacher, Associate Professor Dr Teo Wee Sin, a consultant orthopaedic surgeon, who
came to help us to start the Clinical Phase. His contribution to the UTAR medical course will forever be fondly
remembered and deeply appreciated.
Last, but not the least, we look forward to greater achievements and innovative endeavours by all the staff in the
FMHS in the coming year!

BY PROF YASMIN ABDUL MALIK.
The Department of Pre-Clinical Sciences continues to be responsible for the teaching and learning
activities in the Medical, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Physiotherapy and Nursing programmes.
For the Medical programme, the systemic and integrated teaching and learning approach continues
as a means to equip the students, not only with the required knowledge and skill, but also effective
communication skills that are necessary for their clinical years. This student-centred, self-directed
approach is fully utilized during problem-based learning (PBL), task-based learning (TBL) and
team-based learning sessions. Simulated patients continue to be recruited to help the students to
fine-tune their skills in patient approach when they undergo the Elementary Clinics sessions in year
2, in order for them to be better prepared when they see actual patients during their clinical years.

Wards 5A, 5B, 5C, 5D (Surgery and Orthopaedics) Wards 6A, 6B, 6C, 6D (Medicine)
Their lecturers were Prof Neoh, Dr. Saw, Dr.Zay, Prof. Jenny , Dr.Munir, Dr.Thaw Zin.
The Medical programme also helps prepare the students to attune themselves to the importance of
evidence-based medicine by getting them involved in community-based research. Other than
conducting the research from the ground up, the students are also required to give health talks to the
general public.

The Pre-Clinical Department also continues to make sure that online interactive teaching and
learning resources are made available and are updated regularly. These resources include online e-
books and e-journals, online interactive short courses, multimedia platforms, learning materials as
well as interactive assessment exercises. The students continue to have access to these materials at
the designated multimedia centres, e.g. Medical Library
Currently there are 17 lecturers in this department with 9 from medical and 8 from non-medical
background. Two more lecturers will be joining the department by May 2014. The lecturers, in
addition to being actively involved in the students teaching and learning programs, are also
appointed as academic student advisors.
The lecturers are also required to attend the continuous professional development seminars,
workshop and courses that are conducted under the auspices of the Centre for Educational
Excellence (CEE). With the support of CEE the Department organised and hosted a Problem-Based
Learning Workshop and Seminar in November 2013. Professor Dr Chan LC, a renowned
international expert from the University of Hong Kong was invited to coordinate the workshop. All
the lecturers are also involved in research and more than half of the staff is supervising postgraduate
research students as well. Three of the lecturers are also currently in the midst of completing their
postgraduate studies as well, two for their PhDs and one for her Masters of Science.
PBL Workshop.
On 18th
and 18th
of November 2013, Monday and Tuesday, 30 Faculty members from Faculty of
Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) attended a Problem Based learning (PBL)workshop run by
Prof. Chan li Chong from the University of Hong Kong. All subspeciality departments were well
represented and participated well. Interaction, communication and learning was well motivated.
The workshop revised for those who had some knowledge and experience of this teaching
technique, but the Trainer Prof Chang was very expert in allowing participants to really try their
best in step by step processing of the case scenarios and eventually to produce and write case write-
ups for teaching.
Everyone needed to sit in small groups for discussion, interaction and processing just as is practised
in actual PBL lessons for students to maximise on learning.

Comment on Problem-based learning (PBL) Workshop by Participant.
Prof Chan had conducted an informative and interesting workshop on how to process Problem-Based
Learning (PBL) and do PBL case write up. This is the 3rd
PBL workshop that I have attended, and with the
hands- on experience during this workshop, I have gained a better understanding of the principle of PBL as
well as the effective way in conducting PBL sessions that can benefit students.

1. PRIMARY CARE MEDICINE II REPORT June 2013 until May 2014 is our first time to conduct the “Primary Care Medicine II” rotation. The objectives of this PCM II is to:
Acquire knowledge, skills and attitudes for the care of the patient with special needs within the context of the family and community.
Develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes towards working with the elderly, the terminally ill, the injured, the marginalized and the disabled/handicapped patient.
Develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes to assist persons in the process of rehabilitation, including the referral process and follow-up care.
Understand the role of quality improvement efforts in health care. As such, during this posting, particular emphasis is given to have students develop the correct attitudes in caring for all these types of patients, including those who have HIV/AIDS, the transgenders, the refugees, the old, the terminally ill, and children with disabilities. The first four weeks of the eight week posting is spent on areas covering HIV/AIDS, Geriatrics, Palliative Care, Refugees, Children with Special needs, the Blind and the Physically disabled. Teaching was in interviewing patients, visiting homes and care centres, NGO’s that provide services to these type of patients and interactive tutorials, discussions and students presentations. Students get to the workshop while experiencing what it is like to be wheelchair bound. They also went for lunch at the local food court, also in wheelchairs.
Students get to meet, interview and interact with the men with HIV/AIDS at the HIV nursing home.
Students get to experience what it is like to be blind, how to use the white cane and how to help a blind person. They had to go up and down stairs and maneuver their friends safely around the building as we visited the various departments such as the Braille book production corner, the IT department and learned about “JAWS” software.

2. BRIEF REPORT ON PSYCHIATRY: PSYCHOLOGICAL AND BEHAVIOURAL
MEDICINE CLERKSHIP 2913
The teaching of psychological aspects of Medicine in the MB;BS (UTAR) has been allocated to 5 postings in
batches of 7-8 students in year 4 of the course. Unlike the practice in other medical undergraduate courses,
the introduction to psychological and behavioural aspects of medicine and health through graduated
exposures in mental aspects of health are not in place in Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, UTAR.
These detract from the holistic teaching of psychological medicine in an integrated way, in areas such as
clinical communication skills, psychological aspects of cardiovascular, respiratory or neurological disorders.
The hospitals used were Hospital Ampang and Hospital KL.
The Psychological and behavioural medicine clerkship in year 4 consists of an 8 week block that included
Yr 4 MBBS students training at
the Ampang Clinical Training
Centre(CTC) with Prof M
Parameshvara Deva and Dr Yeoh
Hee Seng
29
a. Seminar teaching
b.Case clerkships and presentations on general psychiatry, community psychiatry, child and adolescent
psychiatry, substance abuse, in inpatient and outpatient settings
c.on site visits to Alzheimer Disease Foundation, Befrienders PJ, and Hospital Bahagia
d. written assessments carried out through a mid posting and an end of posting test and grading for oral
case and seminar presentations during the 8 weeks
Comments.
The psychological and Behavioural Medicine clerkships in Year 4 and the role of mental health need to be
reviewed to emphasise the integration of anxiety depression in PHC and non psychiatric settings. It would
be useful to
1.introduce at least 6 Clinical interview skills teaching sessions uising video feedback in Year 2
2.introduce the importance of social and psychological components of history taking and clinical
examinations in introduction to clinics in year 2.
3introduce psychological aspects of systems disorders in year 2 onwards – e.g. Psychological aspects of
cardiovascular disease or psychological factors in respiratory diseases
4 The serious logistic problems of access to patients with psychological and behavioural problems for
teaching purposes is not satisfactory as HKL has 6 medical schools using the Psychiatric unit and the
problems of transport teaching and interviewing facilities – and the minimal access to patients at Hospital
Ampang are major problems that need addressing soon.

Highlights of Year 2013
The year 2013 marked the uplifting of the Physiotherapy programme to a higher level by
establishment of ‘Department of Physiotherapy’ under the Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences
(FMHS). Thanks to the sincere efforts of many that contributed to the growth of the faculty,
especially the Dean of FMHS whose efforts are commendable in this achievement. There was also a
fairly good response in the student enrolment that totalled 34 students for the year, including all the
three intakes. With this growing number of students, we also had an increase in staff strength which
we believe is very important for the overall development & sustenance of the department. All this
was made possible only with the support from the physiotherapy staff members and other relevant
departments of UTAR.
Again, as in the previous year this year was the beginning of clinical postings for the second year
physiotherapy students who participated in the White Coat Ceremony held in May 2013. More
establishments opened doors for our physiotherapy student clinical training. We thank the
administration as well as the physiotherapists of the following hospitals under the Ministry of
Health (MOH): Hospital Kuala Lumpur, Hospital Sungai Buloh, Hospital Serdang, Hospital
Kajang, Hospital Putrajaya, for accommodating and training the students. Students were also under
the supervision of clinical instructors / local preceptors appointed by UTAR.
The clinical instructors facilitated the students’ learning process by providing a platform to integrate
theoretical knowledge in practice. The support and facilities provided by the above mentioned
hospitals and the staff has been commendable, and the feedback provided by them has helped us
tailor, monitor and measure the clinical training process effectively. With such support and
cooperation from other stakeholders as well, we aim to achieve excellence in providing quality
education here at UTAR.
It gives me immense pleasure to add to the above list of hospitals Columbia- Asia Hospital Cheras
that also agreed to train our physiotherapy students at their private facility. An MoU was signed in
this regard in July 2013, and we hope that their support will continue in future endeavours. The
department has been also closely working with more private facilities to establish industry relevant
links & research collaboration that will help in the overall development of staff, students, the
faculty and the university as a whole. We hope these collaborations with the external parties will be
established in the near future.
41
Apart from the regular clinical training, physiotherapy students were taken on a field trip to Institut
Perubatan Respiratori (Institute of Respiratory Medicine) where the students were updated on the
management of respiratory disorders and the role of physiotherapist in respiratory care. Students
found the session very much useful and effective for their professional development. Students also
attended the Information literacy workshop conducted by UTAR library which proved to be very
useful to them during the conduct of research project which is a requirement of the course.

In the year ahead, we hope for much better achievements and overall development of the
department. With the department growing we do foresee more problems, but having said so, with
this great team of professionals working together for a common goal, and with continuous support
from the university and stake holders, we are sure we can “hop” & overcome any obstacle in our
path. After all, this is the ‘year of the Horse’

DEVELOPMENT OF AESTHETIC MEDICINE FOCUSSING ON HAIR REGENERATION
Foreword by Chairperson
The Centre for Stem Cell Research (CSCR) entered its third year in May 2013. In 2013, we continued to
conduct monthly journal club meetings as a forum to continuously update our knowledge on recent
advances in stem cell research around the world. In 2013, we successful conducted two seminars graced by
prominent overseas speakers; each of the seminars saw about a hundred participants from a dozen
universities and industries, more than anticipated.
55
In 2013, our research efforts are also beginning to bear fruits in the first major stem cell research focus, i.e.
the generation of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC). To date, numerous osteosarcoma cell line-derived
iPSC colonies have been generated and validated to be truly pluripotent. This work, mainly the efforts of
Erica Chong and Hui Xin, under the supervision of Emeritus Professor Cheong Soon Keng, are opening
venues to generating iPSC from many other cancer and disease cell types to be used as disease study
models, and for use in drug screening to combat cancers and human diseases. Other manuscripts have also
been submitted on various aspects of stem cell research, including stem cell senescence and epigenetic
gene regulation in stem cells. 2013 was also the year when cancer stem cell research was also making
significant progress in CSCR.
UTAR CSCR has a small membership, but our research efforts are highly focused. With continued supports
from UTAR and from external funding agencies, 2014 will be the year when we begin to make a mark in the
landscape of stem cell research in Malaysia and internationally.

UTAR Seminar in Recent Advances in Stem Cell Research 2013
Date/time: 25 May, 2013 (Sat) 9.30 am – 12.30 noon
Venue: Sg Long campus, Lecture Theatre 1

Introduction
Stem cells bring in great hope in cell based therapy for regenerative medicine due to their self-renewal and
differentiation potential. Embryonic stem cells are pluripotent while adult stem cells are only multipotent.
The former can be cultured to form any type of cells while the latter has limited lineage differentiation
potential. In year 2006, Yamanaka from Kyoto University, Japan, created induced pluripotent stem cells
(iPSC) where specialized mature cells were ‘reprogrammed’ to obtain embryonic stem-like vast
differentiation properties. In year 2012, Yamanaka and Gurdon received Nobel Prize in Medicine and
Physiology for the discovery of iPSC. Here, research at the Center of Stem Cell Research (CSCR) in UTAR
focuses on both adult stem cells and iPSCs.
58
Progression of scientific research is often boosted by knowledge sharing between various institutions and
diverse groups of specialized researchers. This is extremely important for emerging scientists, especially
post graduate students. Thus, on 25th May 2013, Center for Stem Cell Research, UTAR, and College of
Pathologist, Academy of Medicine, Malaysia co-organized the second Seminar on Stem Cell Research since
inception of CSCR in 2011; the first seminar was conducted in 2012.

Speakers
With emphasis on the basic and translational aspects of stem cell research, including induced pluripotent
stem cell (iPSC), the seminar attracted participants from both the academia and the industry. There were
local and foreign researchers, representatives, staff and others from thirteen (13) institutions which
included research institutions among which are the Institute of Medical Research (IMR) Malaysia, Cancer
Research Initiatives Foundation (CARIF), stem cell companies; Cryocord Sdn Bhd & Cytopeutics Sdn Bhd and
universities including Universiti Malaya (UM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), and International
Medical University (IMU).
In his welcome speech at the seminar, the chairperson of the organising committee Prof Dr Choo Kong
Bung who is also the chairperson of UTAR CSCR said, “We not only have distinguished speakers from
Australia and Singapore and two local senior stem cell scientists to update us on the current trends in stem
cell research, we also have the pleasure of having six young scientists to be our speakers to present their
recent works.” He added that the 3-session seminar would serve as a useful platform for active
engagement with participants from different institutions and the training of research students in the art of
effective presentations. Prof Dr Shelly Soo from the UTAR Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences was the
master of ceremony at the seminar.
The event
The seminar commenced with a keynote lecture by Prof Dr John Sasko AO who is an Australian pioneer in
the application of adult stem cells and genetic therapy. He is also heading the Gene and Stem Cell Therapy
Program at the Centenary Institute in the University of Sydney, Australia. His topic was on the hidden layers
of gene expression control with focus on microRNAs; the mechanisms and the therapeutic strategies in the
control of cell mutations. The next presentation was by Dr Thamil Selvee Ramasamy, Imperial College
London, UK & UM, Malaysia, on her research finding about ‘Multiple signaling pathways regulating
definitive endoderm differentiation from human embryonic stem cells.’
A highlight in the second session was the presentation by the invited speaker; Prof Dr Seow Heng Fong
from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and Institute of Bioscience, Universiti Putra Malaysia on
the relevancy of tumorshperes as in vitro models for studying chemo-resistance of cancer stem cells with
references to the Cancer Stem Cell (CSC) Theory. Showcasing their current findings in stem cell research
were the presentations in the same session by post graduate researchers; Teoh Hoon Koon, Universiti
Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre (UKMMC), National Cancer Council, Malaysia & Universiti Putra
Malaysia on ‘Inhibition of U266 cell growth by human mesenchymal stromal cell-mediated siRNA silencing
of interleukin-6’, Dr Tan Sik-Loo, UM, Malaysia on ‘Growth differentiation factor 5-induced human bone
marrow-derived mesenchymal cells (hMSCs): an imaging analysis via confocal laser scanning microscopy
and atomic force microscopy’ and K. Shri Hymavathee from UTAR CSCR on ‘Oxidative stress-induced pre-
mature senescence in Wharton jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells.’
64
Of equal interest in the final session were the talks on adipose (fat deposits) tissues as potential sources for
metabolic re-programming by Assistant Prof Shikegi Sugii from Singapore Bioimaging Consortium,
Singapore and the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School Singapore and the targeting cancer cells with
genetically engineered mesenchymal stem cells by Emeritus Prof Dr Cheong Soon Keng who is UTAR’s Dean
of Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. The other two presentations were ‘In vitro expansion of
hematopoietic stem cell (HSCs) without stable genetic modification’ by Dr Fazlina Nordin, King’s College
London, UK & UKMMC, Malaysia and ‘An investigation to determine the chondrogenic differentiation
potential of bone marrow and peripheral blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells in vitro’ by Dr Chong Pan
Pan, UM, Malaysia.
The question and answer session after each presentation saw a lively interaction between the presenter
and the participants. The seminar concluded with the presentation of tokens of appreciation to the four
invited speakers and six researchers.
In his closing address, Prof Dr Choo said that the seminar has grown relatively bigger with the addition of
young researchers and expressed his appreciation to all the invited speakers, advisors, participants, the
organising committee and the sponsors (Bio Diagnostics, Cryocord Sdn Bhd, Matrioux Science, Research
Instruments and Team Medical and Science) for making the seminar a success.

(Malaysia).
Professor Teo obtained his MBBS degree from Universiti Malaya in 1975 and became the Fellow of the Royal College of
Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1980. He was elected AM, Academy of Medicine of Malaysia in 1987.
He briefly served as Lecturer in the Department of Orthopaedics Surgery, Universiti Malaya between 1980 and 1983. He
went into private practice in 1983 and worked as Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Subang Jaya Medical Centre from
1985. He returned to the academic world in 2012 when he joined the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universiti
