Made for the Shade: School of Education Gets a Pergola Upgrade

New Car Charging Stations Thanks to Electrical Staff!

New charging stations are now available for use at the Mondavi Gateway District Parking Structure and

Lot 1. Partnering with TAPS and TAPS Construction, Facilities Management electrical staff helped power and install new electric vehicle charging stations over the last two months. Their goal is to help install 100 new stations a year, and currently construction is ongoing for new charging stations at the ARC Pavilion Lot 25 as well.

These Level 2 chargers provide up to four hours access for charging purposes, and any valid UC Davis permit will allow a user to occupy the space.

Outside the UC Davis School of Education stands an L-shaped pergola – a location frequented by students, faculty and staff for informal meetings, learning and recreation. Decades old and deteriorating, the pergola had seen better days.

“The old pergola was in sad shape,” shared David Griffiths, UC Davis Facilities Management inspector/planner/estimator, “Much of

the wood had deteriorated, was coming loose and at risk of falling down. Now, thanks to deferred maintenance funding, this pergola has been restored to new glory!”

The updated pergola is structurally sound, has a long lasting exterior stain, and 500 new aluminum slats that come with a

lifetime warranty and a guarantee not to fade.

“We are thrilled for our community to have respite from the heat of the day under our repaired pergola,” says Dean Lauren Lindstrom. “It makes our building more attractive and welcoming in addition to providing much-needed flexible space.”

Facilities Management staff were responsible for the installation of the long-lasting pergola. A special thanks to Gabriel Waterman, Gustavo Solorzano, and Marine Erby who did an incredible job painting on this project. As well as, Robert Duenas, Ryan Nelson, Mark Stasinowski, and Tim Cryder for their fantastic work with the carpentry. Our staff’s commitment and hard work brought this project to completion ahead of schedule, while still displaying exceptional quality.

Cindy Alei with the UCD Student Disability Center shared, “[Dharandar] Singh’s work is exceptional and he takes it very seriously. He is dependable, thorough, and shows great attention to

detail. He has been responsive to each and every request we have made.”

Debbie Decker, Safety Manager for the Department of Chemistry said, “Thanks Ben [Griffin]..for your prompt response to my quirky building problems. And thanks for your help when we needed to assure safe working conditions in 378 last week.”

“I wanted to pass on our huge appreciation to Chris Arce & Kevin Eubanks from the electrical shop. They went above and beyond and made a huge difference in the Games Area being able to get three lanes up and running again,” stated Janna Tolla, Memorial Union Director.

Green building coordinator, mentor, and now Secretary of Staff Assembly are just a few of the roles Amy Burns holds. She also has three active teens at home involved in basketball,

football, and raising a FFA pig, and more, who jokingly refer to her as “muber” or mom-uber as she runs home from work to drive them to activities in different towns.

As the Green Building Coordinator for the Energy Conservation Office, she works with an ever-changing team of six student-staff to promote green operations throughout campus. The goal is to certify the buildings through LEED and/or BREEAM by analyzing the purchases, chemicals used, waste created and energy use. Amy and her team uphold this duty through the current

investigation of five buildings.

The most rewarding thing about Amy’s job is the student-staff. Students have left the program after graduation and gone on to jobs at Stanford’s Facilities Energy office, Chevron’s sustainability team, Google’s One Workplace, and more! The student-staff obtain skills from their experience with Amy that helps them advance to incredible opportunities after they graduate. “They grow up with me over a couple of years… I let them become managers of these projects.” Amy makes sure to stay in touch after they leave so she can follow-up and continue to be a mentor.

As the Green Building Team makes a lasting impact on campus and the environment, Amy’s dedication to her job, student-staff, and family express that she is an outstanding individual. Amy, thank you for all that you do!

Upgraded Primate Chiller a “Cool” ProjectLast summer, the Primate Research Center at UC Davis saw record highs during a heat wave that hit the region. While the cooling system there was operational and saved them from many scorching hot days, it was due for an upgrade as the system was 30 years old. “We wanted to provide Primate with an upgraded system that also improves redundancy when it comes to their cooling needs,” shares Mike Fan, Utilities Director.

“Our staff had this great idea to use functional equipment, already on campus, to add more reliable capacity to the cooling system and save the campus money at the same time,” Fan said. Utilities Services came up with a plan to use industrial sized cooling and electrical equipment on campus that was still in great shape but not being utilized anymore, since their buildings are now connected to the main campus chilled water distribution system. The equipment included a 500-ton chiller, high voltage transformer, and switch gear from Young Hall and the cooling tower from the Chemistry building.

Work to set up the upgraded system began in February and the chiller is estimated to be up and running by the end of August. By using existing equipment this project saved over an estimated $350,000 and has enhanced the cooling of the Primate Center for many years, largely due to the innovation and effort of Utilities staff. The Water and Gas crew performed all underground work, and the High Voltage team and

Central Plant staff managed the relocation and refurbishment of the equipment. The Utilities Department put a lot of effort into ensuring the success of this project, and are excited about the outcome.
