Ride This - The Movie

The Inspiration:

Babylon: Dir. Franco Rosso

Like many of my ideas in the past, the film 'Babylon' always finds itself in there, somewhere? One of the very first films that really got my imagination as teenager growing up in Forest-Gate. This sets the basic foundation of the movie "Ride This" The music and competition. Its a very well known thing in the world of sound systems, for two big sound systems to go up against eachother. Sometimes for fun, sometimes for money. For most sound systems this was/is a way of life. The two sounds would take turns playing hot off the press records and having their own entertainers or MC's 'ride' over the version. The sound system that moves the crowd and gets most response gets the purse and the chance to be named "The Champion" sound. But you know how it is? Real life still goes on...

Beat Street: Dir. Stan LathanThis film is another big inspiration to 'Ride This'It's also the film where I got my street name from, back in the day lol.Again the basic foundation of music and competition is the order of the day. This time from America. Another big film at the time it was or wasn't released. It was a deeper look into hip-hop. The many different levels off hip-hop, life & death. The soundtrack is also really good to listen to, even when your not watching the film. Hip-hop brought the physical element to ghetto entertainment. Almost like a contact sport, but without all the cuts and bruises. The battle in this film is epic. Especially if you have never seen the film before. But for those who know and love this film, that battle scene get 'us' going every single time without fail lol.Long live Arther Baker.

Breakdance: Dir. Joel SilbergThis was one of those films that kinda spelt out the future of hip-hop?(just didn't know it at the time)Hip-hop was not the high earning industry that we see now, back then? Infact it was almost impossible to simply dance on the street corner with out getting some kind of harrassment. Either by the law or passers by who felt threatened by groups of black youth hanging out on the corner rhyming and spinning on their heads.Definitely a break through movie to the masses.A film to let the white world know that they do not need to fear this new found craze, but to actually check it out? This was when rappers and street crews were started to get major record deals and rap music began to blow up.As we can see after three decades the hip-hop industry is now owned and controlled by big major record labels, which are owned by white men. Good story, good dancing and loads of colour.Another great soundtrack to match too.

Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels:Dir. Guy RitchieOne of my favourite eastend gangland films.Love the humour in this, as well as the twist & turns. The edits and cuts in this film are amazing.Has everything a lad or laddette could ever want.Guns, drugs and loads of violence, but in a funny humourous kinda way lol. It was good to see how things can always go wrong for the silliest of reasons? As one solution is resolved another pitfall lies ahead.Great cast of actors and a great first outing for Mr. Guy Ritchie.

Attack The Block: Dir. Joe CornishI remember waiting to see this film, because it was filmed outside my flat. Not directly, but on my round outside my block.I loved it as soon as I saw it. Being made in Stratford had nothing to do with it. Just a really good exciting film. The angle that the film takes is definitely stretching the imagination a bit, but is well worth it by the end and during.Wonderful cast of actors. The young guy who kinda plays the lead has a bright future. For me it kinda speaks for itself. The children are the future, our future.I liked the special effects and the tension that comes from the story.By the time the credits start to roll, I'm singing and turning up the tv set to hear the final song. This is my main reason for attempting to make 'Ride This'I want to make some kind of statment or lend a helping hand or even question our motives? Why do we do what we do? Who is effected by it? And most of all, who gains from it?

'Ride This' - The MovieJake Sanders

Production Schedule

Each segment of the schedule is to be 'shot' on a week to week basis, giving priority to actors and actresses to choose the day of filming which better suits them. In the event of any mishaps, an actor/actress can opt for a day that leaves them free to shoot for atleast 4hrs per shoot. Most scenes in the film are not very long, but time will be give so that lines or improvisation can take place.

Club Scenes:This is probably the hardest and yet the most important part of the movie. All the club scenes are to be filmed in one day, over the course of 5-6hrs.Actors, Actresses and extras will meet @the 'named' location around midday and work through to early evening.

Prison scenes:Potential locations for these scenes will be the university campus. Enquieries are being made as to see if shooting can take place on the weekend? This should provide for a quieter enviroment and work space. Three 'major' scenes needed here.

Rasoul's Journey:This shoot will be for the ride into London and the encounter with the city gent.An exact location has not been finalised as yet, but may use 'Whipps Cross' 'Wanstead Flats' or take a drive up into Essex? Ideally, looking for vast amounts of space? basically in the middle of nowhere.Using the outside walls of a London Prison, is still an option? The two train stations in the journey will be chosen in regards to the law, cinematic appeal and the co-operation from the guys in uniform who actually work at the 'named' station(s)?Stations to be finalized! Also, a car will be needed for the 'hike' scene into London?(nothing special)

Home & Studio Scenes:These scenes are the more relaxed. Just as important, but in general more easy to shoot.Jamaal is 'only' seen waking up in his room and leaving his house. Rukia is 'only' seen in her kitchen and her bedroom? The idea is to shoot these scenes in the same location, in the same house or flat on the same day? The studio scene where Jamaal is with his friends will either be shot on the university campus recording suite or at a local recording studio. Will shoot this scene at my own home if there are any complications.

Production LogRide This - Tha Movie

Good Friday At this stage, It was expected that the main characters would confirm their roles and then proceed to start shooting.Meanwhile the location for the club scene, which really would've been the heart of the film, started to show signs of pulling out? I later met up with the management of the club and things began to look down hill from there on.

I thought about how important this location was to the film and tried to get hold of the bar that I had used before, for filming but it was a much smaller venue and didn't have a stage, which needed to be in place for it to work? Nevertheless, I went to speak to the bar owners and unfortunately, for me, they were now under new management and I don't think they fully undestood me or just did not want to take the risk?Things started to go pear-shaped from here on in.The artist who would have played the lead female role had fallen ill and canceled for one shoot. When asked at a later date, her Son had falling ill also. This meant I was now loosing time and confidence. Not so much for myself, but more in the convincing of the other actors and support. I began the process of writing parts out and filling over a few gaps here and there in the story. After a few hours, it was looking pretty unsteady?Approaching the first day filming, we arranged for the actor (Jamaal) to film his bedroom scene, as he wakes to take a call.I teamed up with a good sound engineer who I had worked with in the past and had him control the sound from a laptop. This would help out in many ways, saving me tim, running back and forth trying to pay attention to two things at once.We set up our equpiment and decided to do a couple of takes to see how we could get into the scene. After a few takes it was obviously clear that the actor was very camera shy and a little too self concious. We kept on filming. After about 30minutes, I found that the actor wasn't giving enough life to the character or the scene. We tried moving the camera a few times to break the mould and start again from scratch. We had written down a few lines and got tha actor to reply on demand to about five questions.Hoping that actor would think of his own comfortable way of replying, remember it, then say it over again. This didn't happen. Although we had a varity of replies we were still lackin performance-wise? I felt there was a lack of energy. We called it quits on that scene, and went straight into the next. This was more of a straight forward shoot. This was the scene where Jamaal left his home to go to the studio.Things went rather smoothly and one or two fair shoots were captured. The actor did his two scenes and left the location shortly afte that.I was then expecting the radio dj to come down also to shoot his scenes, later on the same night. During the couple of hours of waiting for the dj to turn up, me and the sound technician began to go over what we captured.

The dj turns up and we start to break down what we want him to do and how we wanted him to say it.We hired a well known community dj to do this part as it was kind of fitting to the content of the movie. Plus I thought he could absolutely be himself, as there was no real need for him to act. We asked him to read as if he were on the radio live. After about half an hour, he started to get into character.I had written out a few choice words for him to remember or emphasis and he pretty much took it from there. After about a good hour we had the sound captured that we were happy with and brought out the camera to get a few visuals. These shots were shot more as cut-aways rather then as full blown character shots. Almost annonymous.

So looking ok as a start, but not really too happy with the package? With no club and no female heroine, I had still yet to find a rapper good enuff to star in the lead role?

The sound technician reffered a friend, whom I had met in the past, and said he would be perfect for the role? I instantly agreeded. Then one little thing stuck out...he was white? I thought, a name change here and ther wouldn't hurt anyone? Then I remembered a hip-hop movied called 'House Party 2' starring Kid 'n' Play.I remembered that, when Kid went away to study on campus, his roomate was a white guy, called Jamaal. He was into Malcolm X and the whole black power movement. He even 'rocked' the mic?So until such time, he would make a good leading rapper for this film.I had woken up the very next day to find that I no longer had a sound engineer or assistant. A few things had been discussed and looked to me that he took his opportunity to step out now, instead of going ahead half-heartedly.I began to ask myself, if I had embarked on the wrong idea at the right time? Things were falling out by the seams !With a return back to university in just a few days, it was begining to become clearer that this film could not be made. Especillay within this time frame?I couldn't think. My mind was blank and my movie was all but goin down the pan.I had yet to meet 'Tha Away Team' who were due to come and record their musical parts along with everyone else who had a song to sing. That weekend, I knew this film was not going to be made. Well, not the way I wrote it, anyways! The weekend had past. My phone had stopped ringing and I wasn't making anymore calls, or emails for that matter.Never wanted my project to have anything less than mediocore. But I had to conceid and put it out of my head.Ride This had been ridden into no-mans land.Saved By The BellIt's the first day back in university. I have a few cuts and two scenes in my pocket. Not much to show but, all still a work in progress? Today was the day that I would declear my idea backrupt and mediate and disscuss another idea. The idea would be to keep the same musical idea as planned, but only this time we take away all the trimmings.Get to the heart of the concept in the first place? A music video.Instead of a movie with music, I figured I could salvage the original concept of the film without having it go fully a-miss?I was now stuck with a choice. And a hard one too.I had heard the 'Away Teams' songs online, but still hadn't met them yet in person. Where as I had seen Geemansa a few times. I even met his little Son. Spending alot of time with this artist helped sway my decision. So I approached him on how he felt about choosing a track (which he would've done, anyway) and have a music video done for it? He said he liked the idea, but wasn't so sure on what song he would choose? As long as he was up for doing it, I was happy. I still hadn't met up with the 'Jungle Gang' who were to play the away team.I had just popped out of class to get a drink. The moment I had come back and sat down, the fire alarm sounded. There was a little rush to the yard outside, but me and one or two others drifted off towards the canteen. After about 30mins, I actually left the building. I needed to have something conctrete and in the bag for our show and tell sessions in class. I was now borrowing my time.Later that day I called Geemansa and asked if he wanted to start laying down some foundations for the video. We met up the next day in Woodgreen about 4pm. It was a bright day, the sun was out and shining. We walked up to his old school exchanging ideas back and forth. Never felt offended, but I could tell he wasn't warming to any of my ideas, even as innocent as they were? We walked up into a playground and I asked him to rap a little, maybe from the song he wanted to do? Turns out that he still hadn't chosen one yet? No problem - I asked him to rap anything so i could get an exposure and maybe give him something to look at to inspire him? The sun was still pretty high in the sky even around 5pm so we put the camera away and walked up into the centre of the Woodgreen shopping area. Here, we saw a few of his friends. Looked like he knew them pretty well, as hey began to talk for awhile.I asked him and his friends if it was alright if I filmed them. They were ok with it. So I pulled out my camera and started shooting some footage. Soon after we met one of his uncles, who had come out with his family to celebrate a birthday. For me things were looking up-ish? I was getting some cut-away footage and making the video on the spot. After about 20 minute, I put the camera away, joined him for a drink at the bar. We talked some more and agreed to chat the next day. This would give him a chance to select a song fitting for what we were shaping and discussing. As I made my way home on the train, I couldn't help but think about how well this would hold up if there were any problems?A few new messages had come through to my facebook. It was the Jungle gang (The Away Team) from the original movie? They had sent a message with their number on it stating 'they had only seen my message now?' I called them that same moment. I explained that the movie wasn't goin ahead anymore and that they may or may not be needed anymore? Not unless they wanted to do a music video too, instead?Hearing their songs online I already had them down as the Away Team as they look and sound as worthy finalists, but not too out of this world. They were cool. Anyway we arranged to meet the next day at a fast food resturant up in Canning Town, where they come from. Once they were all there, theres about six of them, we all sit around this little table, and I tell them the situation. I said 'Right now, it's a coin flip to do a music video?' Either Jungle Gang or Geemansa?Having said all this, there was always going to be a draw back with the Jungle Gang. The track that I liked and wanted to work with has a copyright on it, which obviously hasn't beed cleared. So as for as getting a mark is concerned, copyright music is a no can do situation. For about a minute they all looked at each other as if to find a way around it. They said they could lift the vocals off of it and lay them down on another track that they made? Sounded good enough for me. All I needed to do now was just to hear it? I did not have time to throw away, so I asked how soon could they do that? They said they could do it on the Friday. They told me that they have access to a studio within a local youth club. (Seems as though its actually there for them?)They invited me to come down and meet them at this studio and start filming straight away. They seemed more than keen. A quiet sense of confidence. I was not going to hold my breathe. One false move, could be curtains. Not just for the movie, but for grades as a movie-maker.

Which Way Is Up?So we arranged to meet in Plaistow, east london for 7pm.As I arrive Mills Z come to meet me out on the road.He leads me into the youth club. Inside look kinda deserted, until I saw the rooms on the side. Absolutely packed with youth, boys and girls. They're focus? Music. There were two studios - One was like a reahersal or writing room, while the other was a little bit more hi-tech with some very nice equipment running on an mac. They were in the the studio behind the rehersal room. You could hear the music bumping as you walked through the access doors in the lobby. As the door opened in the studio you could hear the vybes pump out. It was energetic, livley and fun. Still not holding my breathe, I went outside to put my bags down and get my camera out.

Tuff Decisions To MakeI walked back into the studio with my camera. The Jungle Gang were getting more energetic and were rhyming over various tracks as they were going through a few recording with their in-house engineer. The sounded good. Not only that, but they also created loads of action where they didn't really need telling what to do either. After an hour or so, they found the track that they wanted to use. It was a donation from a french producer who they had been networking with for a radio project. The track was rather jazzy and had a bit of a swing to it. I liked it. And by the way they were all reacting, I think they were loving it too. They then got ready to laydown they're vocals, when a club representitive came in and said that they only had 5mins until they hd to start packing the stuff away. This was not good. For some odd reason the club had to close an hour earlier at 8pm, instead of 9pm.This didn't seem to bother the gang too much, as it looked like they were used to such treatment. THey began to pack away the equiptment and began questioning the club reps when they could return to finish their project? They were told, next week friday, as they were in a meeting on the monday. As long as we get the track, I wasn't concerned. My only worry was, that I had to show & tell on tuesday.I already had enough footage for refference sake, but nothing concrete as in begining, middle and end.The actual track, had yet to be recorded? What could I do?How do I convince my lectures and fellow students that this was the course of action that I was now going to persue? We all ended the night with a little smoke and made plans to meet the follwing week, for friday.

Brick LaneIt was late saturday evening and I was going over the track over and over again. I wanted to have something more? A few rushes of them rhyming was not goin to be enough to convice anyone that I was taking any kind of action and would've looked like lost-found footage? I gave them a call and asked if they would befree on sunday to do a test shoot down on Brick-Lane, east london? They all said that would be fine and arranged to meet for 6pm.I arrived a few minutes ahead of them and began to scout the placeout for a few choice locations? Around 20minutes later my phone rings. It was Doze. He said they all jus got off the bus and that they would be with me shortly. I told them where I was and waited for them, eagerly.Once they arrived, we startedto walk towards our first location. There was a gang member missing? They explained how they could not get hold of the 'middle' rapper Vinny? One disater after another? I was furious.I told the guys that we would still carry on filming without him. They didn't seem to mind and we started shooting.Working with these guys was more than easy.they were so together as a unit, that it made things a whole lot better to work with. They only need the basics, like reminding them not to get too far out of shot or to be a little bit more expressive when dilivering the parts? Apart from that, I just let my camera roll.A few takes were captured then we moved further on down the road to another location. Mills Z spots a location that catches his eye. We set up shop and start to shoot. Without the 2nd man, we still managed to get on and get some good work done. We filmed until it started to get too dark and then decided to call it a day.I had captured enough footage to be able to convince my lecturers and fellow students that this was now, still a visable idea.

Explaining The Car CrashIt was now getting closer to the hand-in date and I now had to present my footage or idea. I playedwhat I had and recieved some harsh critisism. The lectures were looking for more production value. They wanted cleaner shots. They wanted steady, flowing camera work. They suggested that I get smoother footage and re shoot again. The next day I called the gang and arranged for us to shoot again at the weekend. It was saturday and we all got ready to meet at the location. One of the band members sent a text explaining that 'Vinny' had lost his Grandfather over the weekend and that he will not be able to show up. So we canceled until further notice. Meanwhile I was thinking, how could I possibly get the footage I needed in time for Tuesday's class? I decided I would use this time to find a friend with a car. It was suggested to me by my lecturers to use the car as my tripod and get my shots nice and smooth. The following weekend Vinny contacted me and said he would be able to meet with the rest of the gang this weekend. I had arranged for my friend with the car to meet us on location in Brick-Lane. The gang arrived around 6:30pm. We got into a warm up test shot, so that Vinny could get a feel of the shoot and the location. After a few takes and some negotiations we moved to the main set.I opened the boot of my friends car and sat in the boot.I steadied my camera on its tripod into a comfortable position. We did our first take. It went ok, but I felt that vinny was lacking in 'pucnh and bite' He was just not attacking his verse right? We backed up the car again into position and rolled again. This time the action was more lively. The night began to creep in. We had already prepared for this gradual loss of light and had brought a small night light with us.It was nothing big, but did a great job in lighting the subjects. We rolled again. But only this time I asked the driver to carry on driving as much as she could. Even if it meant driving around the corner or in through the crowd of people walking in the streets. We did the take and it went well. We caused a lot of attention and even attracted some would-be volunteers?I played a few of the shots back to the gang. They like d what they sawand wanted to shoot one more time. I asked my driver to back and start again. We rolled for the last time and called it a rap.

I returned to class with this footage in place from the previous timeline. Once seem by the lecturers, they were pleased enough with the new smoother shots, but were still unsure about the overall content in regards to my movie?I explained that it should be a condensed version of the classic 'Banksy' film - Exit ThroughThe gift Shop?We debated for a few minutes and decided upon just dealing with the project as a music video. They had seen some of the extra footage and could see where I was coming from, but they thought that it would take shape or form, within the time span that I had?We also agreed to make a few edit to the video and only use clear fooage for that part of the video. This is where we get a breif interview with the gang, how they started etc.So with two weeks left until submission, I had a lighter load to carry, but still had to get alot done on the editing side of things.Colour grading and getting precise cuts from frame to frame were next on the agenda, and getting the titles and credits done too.

A week to go and I arrange for the jungle gang to meet me at my home to have a quick review of the newer version of their music video. They watched the video intensely. They said they liked the video alot and could see where the new smoother footage had help boost the look and performance of the video. I explained that it will be handed in next week and may possibly be shown at tha end of year show? They were pleased, and so was I.Ride This, was a very trying experience. I knw I had bitten of quite a chunk, but the whole process was eye opening and empowering. I began to feel as though I was working on a live project, like 'live tv' rather than on location in production mode. It gave me a chance to meet a wealth of people, including club owners, singers and other artists.I don't have any regrets about the project. The template is there and can be brought to life on the future. Making the Jungle Gang music video has given me drive and motivation and a chance to do something within the genre that I love, Hip-Hop.

InfluenceThe biggest influence for me would be Mr.Hype Williams. He is most definitely one of the most successful music video directors within the hip-hop genre. I have been a fan of his since his first video 1993. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSgCM0F2GN8

HIs videos can be very chic and classy and then they can be gritty and dirty but still very appealing at the same.

His track record is almost flawless and has built up quiet an extensive portfollio of work over nearly two decades. He has worked with a whole host of artist like Kanye West, P-Diddy, Wu-Tang Clan, Busta Rhymes, Janet Jackson, Nicki Minaj, Willow Smith, Missy Elliot, Beyonce, Mary J Blige, Mariah Carey, Queen Latifah, LL Cool J, Lady Gaga and the list goes on. His style is very recognisable and has very classy shots of wealth and luxury. He is also known for his fish eye technique.Hype Williams practically owns the position as the most popular director in the music business to date.

Just a few artists that have worked with Hype Williams. Here is a musical playlist containing some of the work Hype Williams has done over the years.http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2179B286BE086092And here is a short interviewhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kSjA5r47id0Here is Hype Williams giving motivation to talenthttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rG8EcdFYjlg
