“Serving our communities tomake them better places to live.”

D-158 ramps up high school improvementsBy STEPHEN Di [email protected]

HUNTLEY – Constructioncrews soon will start turningsoil throughout the HuntleyHigh School football stadium, after the District 158 boardearlier this week unanimous-ly approved $1.4 million inconstruction bids.

Board President Don Drzalsaid that football stadium con-struction, the first project tothe district’s extensive expan-sion of the high school, couldbegin by early June.

The majority of the bidsthat members approvedThursday involve excavationof the football field and instal-lation of drainage equipmentbefore a new synthetic foot-ball turf is installed.

“At this point now, we aregoing to monitor the actualprogress that takes place,”Drzal said. “We are in fullproject mode.”

Other items included in the$1.4 million construction bidinvolve the installation of anew track surface around thefootball field and the purchaseof new on-field equipment, such as goal posts.

District administratorsalso are preparing to releaseanother construction bid inthe coming weeks that wouldseek vendors to install anirrigation system along theschool’s baseball and soccerfields, Drzal said.

Construction on the exteri-

or improvements to the highschool should conclude bymid-August, Drzal said. Dis-trict officials then would startfinalizing their budget on theinterior upgrades to the highschool.

Those improvements couldinclude wider hallways and

additional classroom space, but the board still wants tonarrow that wish list to man-age costs.

The district has wanted toexpand the high school so thatthe building can house the3,000 students who are expect-ed to roam the halls by 2019.

H. Rick Bamman – [email protected]

Preliminary expansion plans for Huntley High school to accommodate 3,000 students in the near futurewere discussed by the Huntley 3000 committee and the board.

Huntley plan worrying someHistorians fear village might demolish two downtown buildings

By STEPHEN Di [email protected]

HUNTLEY – With an eyetoward refurbishing thedowntown, Huntley offi-cials have bought two moreproperties there, including atwo-story residence that onceserved as a hotel for railwayvisitors in the early 1900s.

But the recent downtownpurchases are causing con-cern among some local his-torians, who fear that thevillage is merely paying lipservice to preserving thehistoric infrastructure thatcreated the village’s countrycharm.

Village trustees and ad-ministrators are about toramp up planning and en-gineering on Huntley’s 2010

downtown revitalizationplan, which includes addingdevelopment and improvingbuilding facades and streetsthroughout the Huntleysquare.

“Demolition is somethingthe village is good at, andrestoration is something Ihave never seen them do,”said local historian Tom Con-ley, who is a fifth-generationHuntley resident. “I see no

support for historical preser-vation from this village.”

The Huntley HistoricPreservation Commission ex-pressed similar concerns lastyear after members heard ru-mors that the village wantedto tear down the former Saw-yer-Kelley Mill along MainStreet for additional down-town parking.

The village purchased theformer mill, 11801 Main St.,

which was built in the 1890sand belonged to two influen-tial Huntley businessmen,W.G. Sawyer and John Kel-ley.

Conley, a former commis-sion member, said the villagehasn’t been clear with itsintentions behind the down-town purchases, includingthe two properties the VillageBoard authorized buying ear-lier this month.

The two-story former hotelis on the southeast corner ofthe downtown, between therailroad tracks and Route 47.The Siegrist family operatedthe property since the 1890sas a hotel for visitors cominginto town via the railroad,Conley said.

“Demolition is something the village is good at,

and restoration is something I have never seen

them do. I see no support for historical

preservation from this village.”

MARENGO STUDENTWINS CAROperation Click offers incentives to help kids adopt safe driving habits

CYNTHIA [email protected]

CRYSTAL LAKE — AHarvard High School senior,a Cary-Grove High School ju-nior and a Marengo Commu-nity High School junior eachbecame the proud owner of anew vehicle Friday.

And none will pay a dimetoward the car, tax or license.

Jacqueline Jimenez, Su-san Taddy and Keegen Zick-uhr were the lucky studentswhose keys turned over theignitions at the culmination ofthe Operation Click banquetat D’Andrea Banquets in Crys-tal Lake.

Perhaps most excited, though, was Taddy’s mom,who kept repeating “Oh myGod, oh my God, oh my God!”when her daughter’s turn atthe wheel started the 2010 redChevrolet Aveo.

“It’s pretty cool,” 17-year-old Susan Taddy said. “I wasthe last person [to turn a key],so I was hoping.”

Zickuhr held the second-to-last key when he climbed intothe 2008 PT Cruiser he wonFriday.

“I think it’s an amazingthing, just to get kids to drivemore safely,” Zickhur said ofthe Operation Click program.“I’m very nervous and excit-ed.”

Jimenez’ eyes grew largewhen her attempt started herblack 2007 Pontiac G6.

“I was like ‘Oh, wow,’” shesaid. “I think it’s a great pro-gram.”

About 300 people attendedthe banquet Friday. Oper-ation Click President SeanMcGrath, a Crystal Lake pa-trolman, said the peer-runprogram offers an extra in-centive to help students adopt

safe driving habits – includingnot just buckling up, but alsodriving sober and not textingand driving.

The program began in 1998with just three Crystal Lakehigh schools. It now involvesstudents in 39 high schools innorthern Illinois and Wiscon-sin.

Cars this year were donat-ed by Courtesy Buick GMC ofCrystal Lake, Kunes CountryFord of Antioch, and by a fi-nancial contribution from theLake in the Hills Rotary Club,

Intren of Union and AdvocateGood Shepherd Hospital ofBarrington, McGrath said.

Students at participatingschools sign safe driving con-tracts, and seat-belt compli-ance surveys are performedquarterly.

From each qualifyingschool, one to four studentsare selected to draw a keyduring the banquet.

A good deal of emphasisduring the banquet was placedon the dangers of texting anddriving, a practice that makes

a person 23 more times likelyto be involved in a crash.

McGrath referred to 2011statistics that showed thaton any given weekday, abouta half a million people weretalking on their cellphoneswhile driving, and 1.2 millionwere “engaged with theirmobile device in some way,”whether it be texting, check-ing their calendars or usingGPS navigation.

“So how safe are we?” Mc-Grath asked.

He commended partici-

pating students, faculty andparents, and said that the pro-gram has led to seat-belt com-pliance among participatingschools averaging between94 percent and 96.25 percent, whereas the state average is93.6 percent.

Some individual schoolssaw compliance rate increas-es of as much as 18 percentbetween pre-program surveysand surveys conducted afterthe school and its studentsbegan promoting OperationClick, McGrath said.

Caffeination Station brews gourmet coffeeBy STEPHEN Di [email protected]

HUNTLEY – John and Pat-ti Wuich can find themselvesconsuming a couple pots ofcoffee in a day.

Like most avid coffeedrinkers, the Huntley cou-ple knows the effect a fresh, quality brew can do to a per-son enduring the daily grind. The former owners of WuichMechanical in Huntley alsoknow a good business oppor-tunity when they see one.

Combining their businesssavvy and love for coffee, thetwo recently started an on-line-only coffee store calledthe Caffeination Station. Thecornerstone of their start-upbusiness is an automatic, gourmet coffee machine im-ported from Italy.

The machine can dispenseeight different espresso-stylecoffees, including cappucci-no, mochachino, black coffeeand even hot chocolate.

“You are getting a bettertasting coffee than the in-stants. It’s a gourmet blend. It’s a convenience to theemployee and employer be-cause they don’t have to doanything,” John Wuich said.“There’s nothing but plus-es.”

Nearly a month ago, Johnand Patti Wuich received theproper licensing to importthe Italian-made machine. With five machines in hand, they have attended businessexpos in Huntley and Crys-tal Lake to spread the wordabout their small start-upbusiness.

The couple believes themachine is a superior alter-native to the typical coffeemachines that populate of-fice cafeterias and waitingrooms.

For one, the machine dis-penses high-quality blendsand provides gourmet alter-natives to the traditionalblack coffee, they said.

The couple also won’tcharge a business for in-stalling machine, opting tocharge a $1 per cup that mayor may not be passed on toemployees. The couple offersflexible payment plans thatcan be negotiated with anybusiness that wants the ma-chine.

The two also service themachines, which plug into aregular electrical outlet foroperation.

“It saves employers timebecause they aren’t makingthat specialty coffee run,”Patti Wuich said. “Employ-ees can get a cappuccino orfrappe from the office, andemployers can save moneyand keep employees happy.”

The two have spent thelast month networking withbusinesses and finalizing amarketing plan. They hopeto have 20 machines in placewith businesses across theChicago area by the end ofthe year.

The web-based Caffein-ation Station also offers 20 to30 different coffees availablefor the sale. John and PattiWuich roast the high-qualityblends and ship them within24 hours of receiving the cof-fee beans.

The speedy delivery guar-antees that consumers bothat home and in the office canget a savory cup of coffee.

“People can have thatgreat cup of coffee at homewithout having any of thechemicals,” Patti Wuichsaid. “You’re not going to beable to get anything fresherbecause we do the roasting.”

Tollway talks motivate plan

By STEPHEN Di [email protected]

MARENGO – The Illi -nois Tollway Authority gaveMarengo officials the nextsix months to present an ini-tial interchange design asthe agency prepares to retoolarea bridges for its Interstate90 widening project.

Marengo must have itsboundaries extended alongRoute 23 to I-90 before thatpoint to have the “standing”to develop the preliminarydesigns, City Manager GaryBoden said.

In the face of resistance, city officials have been tryingall year to annex nearly 2,400acres southwest of its bordersto reach I-90 and begin formaltalks with the Tollway aboutfinancing a new interchangeintended to spur future devel-opment in the area.

“The fact of the matter isuntil we are annexed up to theinterstate, we can’t take a for-mal lead,” Boden said.

The city’s annexation plancuts through Riley Township, whose officials routinelyhave criticized Marengo foracting too fast and disregard-ing proper planning in seek-ing to add the extra acreage.

But Boden said Marengowill have its boundaries ex-

tended to I-90 in “the nextseveral months” to completetime-intensive soil studiesalong I-90 that are needed fora preliminary interchange de-sign.

Tollway spokeswoman JanKemp said the agency alreadyhas begun planning to rebuildnumerous bridges, includingRoute 23, in the agency’s I-90widening project, which willadd driving lanes from Chica-go to Rockford.

“The Tollway has advisedMarengo officials that a pre-liminary design for a pro-posed interchange would beneeded within the next sixmonths to ensure that thebridge we build can accom-modate a future interchange,”Kemp said.

The Tollway has just be-gun informally talking withMarengo, McHenry andDeKalb counties, and the statetransportation departmentabout a new interchange atRoute 23 and I-90, Kemp said.

The Tollway has mademore than $100 million avail-

able to communities alongI-90 for new interchangeconstruction, as part of theTollway’s widening project,Kemp said.

The agency already hasfielded requests from morethan a half-dozen communi-ties, which like Marengo arecompeting for limited Toll-way construction funds.

The preliminary inter-change design would be anearly step in a complex, andoften lengthy, planning pro-cess before the Tollway en-dorses funding for a new in-terchange.

It took Huntley nearly adecade of planning before theTollway officially endorsedfunding for the $61 million in-terchange at Route 47 and I-90that now is being constructed.

Huntley’s approach to theproject is regarded as themodel for any Illinois com-munity wanting to build aninterchange with the Toll-way.

Village officials gatheredcommitments from local gov-

ernments, including McHen-ry and Kane counties, beforepresenting its financing planto the Tollway. The local por-tion covered 50 percent of theproject costs, with Huntleyfooting about $5.4 million ofthe bill.

“The key is the localshare,” Huntley Village Man-ager Dave Johnson said. “Itgives you more credibilitywhen you go meet with theTollway.”

Likewise, Marengo wouldstart to intensify discussionson financing an interchangeat Route 23 with the likes ofMcHenry and DeKalb coun-ties, once the city’s bordersare extended to I-90, Bodensaid.

McHenry County BoardChairwoman Tina Hill saidthe county has yet to discussfinancing a Route 23 inter-change.

The County Board is “wait-ing and seeing” how Marengoadvances the project beforeCounty Board members startdebating financial proposalsin committee, she said.

“We have no position onthis. It hasn’t been discussedat any level. It’s a decisionthat is left up to Marengo,”Hill said. “It’s in their ball-park now. We are waiting onMarengo.”

Marengo officials have 6 weeks to present interchange design

“The fact of the matter is until we are annexed up to

the interstate, we can’t take a formal lead.”

Last year, Take ChargeIndy found himself in the mid-dle of the run for the roses atChurchill Downs.

This weekend, the 4-year-old colt, owned by Marengoresidents Chuck and MaribethSandford, will run again at thesite of the Kentucky Derby.Take Charge Indy will run inthe $300,000 Alysheba Stakeson Friday, a grade 2, 1 1/16-mile race that will be part ofFriday’s Kentucky Oaks un-dercard, Sandford confirmedApril 26.

Trainer Patrick Byrne said

Rosie Napravnik – who rodeTake Charge Indy to a sec-ond-place finish at the SkipAway Stakes in March – willagain be aboard for Friday’srace, which is expected tobe run in front of more than100,000 fans.

“These are always toughraces, but he seems to be do-ing well,” Byrne said in atelephone interview. “So we’lllook forward to running himand watching him run.

“This will probably be a lit-tle tougher race [than the SkipAway Stakes], but he’s up forthe task.

Take Charge Indy, which isstabled at Churchill for eight

months out of the year, ledfor much of the Skip AwayStakes. Cigar Street made alate charge down the stretchafter taking the lead on the fi-nal turn and edged out TakeCharge Indy at the finish.Since then, Byrne said TakeCharge Indy has been able toput on weight and is runningstronger than he was earli-er this spring, which shouldmake for a solid performancein Friday’s run.

The Sandfords have haveentries in races throughoutDerby week, which Byrne de-scribed as a Super Bowl andMardi Gras all rolled up intoone. Maribeth Sandford grew

up in Louisville and aroundthe Derby, but said that it’seven more of a spectacle to bepart of it first-hand.

After last year, when TakeCharge Indy finished 19th inthe Kentucky Derby, ChuckStandford said there won’t beas much newness to adjust tothis time around, especiallyon a track where his horsesfeel at home.

“Derby Week is just a spe-cial week and we got to gothrough it last year,” ChuckSandford said. “So we under-stand it a little bit better andso to be able to run a couple ofdifferent horses on Oaks Dayshould be really exciting.”

Huntley church completes expansionSt. Mary Catholic Church unveils $8M addition of Parish Ministry Center

By STEPHEN Di [email protected]

HUNTLEY – Inside St.Mary Catholic Church, theRev. Steve Knox can walk fre-er, and breathe easier, nowthat an $8 million additionthat includes extra meetingspace recently opened to pa-rishioners.

The Huntley church’s newParish Ministry Center hasbeen two years in the mak-ing and now gives the church33,000 square feet of addition-al space that Knox and otherchurch staff have envisionedas a place where parishionerscan grow their relationshipwith God.

“It enhances the parishlife,” Knox said. “When youhave spaces for people to get

together, good things hap-pen.”

The center, dedicated andblessed last Saturday by Bish-op David Malloy of Rockford, gives the church 17 inter-changeable classrooms for itsreligious education programthat can be converted intomeeting rooms for staff, pa-rishioners and the public.

The center includes aParish Hall, complete with afull-service kitchen, wherethe church can host socialgatherings, religious re-treats, youth ministry eventsand funeral luncheons for thefirst time in the church’s his-tory.

Stained-glass windowsform the walls of the cen-ter’s Eucharistic AdorationChapel, a smaller, private

space where parishioners canspend solemn time with theirthoughts and the Lord.

Knox and the St. Mary’sstaff started planning de-signs and a fundraising cam-paign for the center in 2011,after seeing demand fortheir church grow followingyears of population growththroughout Huntley.

The church had gonefrom serving 350 households15 years ago to serving 5,300households today. Staff hadonly the existing church attheir disposal, with only ahandful of meeting roomsavailable in the basement.

The limited space forcedthe church in some instanc-es to create makeshift officespace.

It rented classroom space

at Huntley District 158’s Mar-lowe Middle School for $50,000a year, so that students fromkindergarten to the seventhgrade in the church’s reli-gious education programcould have adequate room.

Now the church no lon-ger will rely on Marlowe. The added classroom spaceincluded in the center alsocomes equipped with the lat-est audio and visual technol-ogy that allows the churchsome extra creativity withdeveloping the faith of thechurch’s youngest members.

The center also includesextra office space for admin-istrators. The Parish Hallnow will be able to handleoverflow from the flood of pa-rishioners who typically at-tend the popular Christmas

and Easter Masses. But Knox finds it especial-

ly a relief that the $8 millionproject was solely supportedby parishioners, who he saidgreeted the project with en-thusiasm.

In a wide-ranging fund-raising campaign, the churchcollected more than $5 mil-lion in parishioner pledges. The church will continue tocollect pledges and donations,as it pays down the remain-ing $3 million owed on thecenter, Knox said.

“It was all done with pa-rishioners. We knew it wasgoing to be challenge becauseof the economy,” Knox said.“If people see the need andthey are supportive, theyusually will step up, and theydid.”

Thinking scientificallyBy JOSEPH BUSTOS

[email protected]

Inside Jake Seiler’s Prai-rie Ridge High School chem-istry class, students shooktogether compounds suchas dinitrogen tetroxide andnitrogen dioxide, and stuckthem into cold water and intohot water.

The students see whetherthey change color, and by theend of the lab after testingvarious compounds, Seilersaid, they should be able topredict what happens if thesubstance is heated or cooled.

Students applying con-cepts, designing more, hav-ing them make modificationsand doing more hands-on ac-tivities is the main thrust ofthe Next Generation ScienceStandards being put togetherand which are expected to beadopted by the state possiblyby the end of the school year.

The proposed standardseven have progression for stu-dents on what knowledge theyshould be gaining by certaingrade levels. For example, be-tween third and fifth grade, students should be learninghow humans and other or-ganisms can be affected if theglobal temperature continuesto increase. By middle school, students would be learninghow human activities alteror damage the biosphere andhow humans can reduce theirimpact on the environment.

In District 158, which in-cludes Huntley High School, science teachers are prepar-ing for the new standards.

Mike Wheatley, directorof the health, physical educa-tion and science curriculum, said teachers at the elementa-ry level will have students do-ing more hands-on activitieswhen it comes to science.

Part of the new sciencestandards is integrating theScience Technology Engi-neering Mathematics ap-proach.

Students synthesize infor-mation from other subjectareas to design solutions toproblems. Students need touse math to back a solution toa problem in a science class,Wheatley said.

Wheatley said District 158plans to have the standardsin place for the 2014-15 school

year.The proposed science stan-

dards are broken down intothree categories: the tradi-tional acquisition of knowl-edge, cross-cutting across dis-ciplines such as using mathin science and hands-on sci-ence activities.

Jeff Robinson, a biolo-gy teacher at Huntley HighSchool, said the new sciencestandards will be a shift inthe science curriculum.

H i s t o r i c a l l y , s c i e n c eteachers concerned them-selves with teaching sciencefacts, having students work asection out of a textbook andthen take a test.

“But it’s a shift [to] teach-ing them a scientific mindsetand giving them the ability tobe scientific thinkers,” Rob-inson said.

For example, instead ofhaving students memorize

parts of a cell, students willbe asked how does a piece ofDNA produce a protein, Rob-inson said. If students areinvestigating a problem, andthey have to figure out thetiny details, it will leave alonger impression.

Matt Elder is a scienceteacher at Marlowe MiddleSchool in Lake in the Hills, where students have begun towork on a medieval unit.

As part of the unit, hisclass will build one-and-half-foot catapults to launch ping-pong balls. The students haveto research and design thecatapults on their own, Eldersaid.

“One of the things we de-cided to do is incorporatep r o b l e m - b a s e d l e a r n i n gwhere students have moreresponsibility of gainingknowledge, rather than ustelling them what to do,” El-

der said.Kathy Gilbert is the math

division chairwoman at Prai-rie Ridge High School, andnext school year she is slatedto become the STEM divisionchairwoman at the schoolwhen the science and mathdepartments merge.

At District 155, the sciencecurriculum already has a lotof lab activity that the NextGeneration Science Stan-dards emphasize.

“I don’t think it’s going tobe a radical change for us,”Gilbert said.

As part of her role thisschool year, she has been ob-serving science classroomsand preparing for the upcom-ing science standards.

“The emphasis in the paston science curriculum hasreally been on acquisition ofknowledge and finding outdifferent things and getting

knowledge.” Gilbert said.“With our current generationof students, it’s easier andeasier to find knowledge ifyou need it. The Internet hasmade things easily accessi-ble. The acquisition of knowl-edge, while still important,is not going to be the majorthrust. ... We’re really look-ing to see students do science.Be more active in science.”

Gilbert said the emphasisof the standards will be ondoing science, from kinder-garden through 12th grade.

“Let’s do science, let’s in-vestigate., let’s analyze, let’smake it a part of who we are, instead of an abstract con-cept,” Gilbert said. “In orderfor people to be successful inour current world, they needto be able to analyze, breakthings down, put things to-gether, and have that curios-ity for learning.”

Local foundations benefit from farmersSHAWMEDIA

HUNTLEY – The HuntleyArea Public Library FriendsFoundation and the McHenryCounty 4-H Youth Foundationwill now be able to better servethe community thanks to thesupport of local farmer, Pame-la Kampwerth, and America’sFarmers Grow Communities.

Sponsored by the Monsan-to Fund, the philanthropicarm of Monsanto Company,

Grow Communities providesfarmers in eligible countiesthe chance to win a $2,500 do-nation for a local nonprofit or-ganization of their choice. Tofurther support counties de-clared natural disaster areasby the U.S. Department of Ag-riculture due to the droughtthis year, winning farmers inthese counties are able to di-rect double donations, a totalof $5,000.

McHenry County was de-

clared a disaster area by theUSDA, giving Kampwerth theopportunity to choose two or-ganizations to receive $2,500donations. Kampwerth select-ed the Huntley Area PublicLibrary Friends Foundationand the McHenry County4-H Youth Foundation. TheHuntley Area Public LibraryFriends Foundation will usethe funds for summer and win-ter reading programs at the li-brary. The McHenry County

4-H Youth Foundation will usethe money to offer outstand-ing 4-H opportunities to en-courage 4-H’ers to be helpful, engaged in their communitiesand leaders in building a bet-ter world.

“I directed the donation tothe Friends Foundation be-cause I worked at the libraryfor 10 years and the FriendsFoundation helps raise mon-ey to support it,” Kampwerthsaid. “I directed the addition-

al donation to the 4-H YouthFoundation because both mykids were in 4-H and it is valu-able for teaching kids respon-sibility and leadership.”

Increase to taxbreak for seniorspasses in Illinois

By EMILY K. [email protected]

Older homeowners will geta bigger tax break on their taxbills next year.

The Illinois House and Sen-ate overwhelming passed –with just two “no” votes in theHouse and none in the Senate– a bill that raises the seniorcitizen homestead exemptionfrom $4,000 to $5,000.

Gov. Pat Quinn signed thebill into law March 23.

The increase amounts tosavings of about $100 for a se-nior citizen with a home val-ued at $200,000 in Crystal Lake.

The change goes into effectimmediately in Cook County, but for McHenry County andthe rest of the state, the changeaffects bills sent out in 2014and later.

Several area legislatorssaid the difference was be-cause of the timeline for CookCounty assessments, whichruns later than in other coun-ties.

The exemption has beensteadily rising since 2003,when the exemption was$2,000 in counties other thanCook.

The way property taxes arecalculated doesn’t take intoconsideration that home val-ues are falling and that manysenior citizens are on fixed

incomes, said state Rep. MikeTryon, R-Crystal Lake. Thechange in the exemption triesto address some of that discon-nect.

“I get calls every day fromseniors literally in tears whoare scared they are going tolose their homes,” said stateRep. Jack Franks, D-Marengo.

Franks was a co-sponsor ofthe bill.

He also has sponsored abill that would prevent gov-ernments subject to the prop-erty-tax cap from collectingincreases in years that theiroverall assessed value de-creased unless they have voterapproval.

The measure was defeatedearlier this month in a 43-65vote, but Franks said he’s stillworking on getting the mea-sure through.

How they voted

A bill that raises the senior citizenhomestead exemption, SenateBill 1894, passed both the IllinoisHouse and Senate. Here’s how arealegislators voted:State Sens. Pam Althoff, Dan
