Potential or Available Target Test Areas

Existing and Near Future Capabilities Potential or Available Target Test Areas

FacilitySuitable for low

activation, shallow depth

radiation damage testing

Suitable for bulk sample radiation damage testing

Suitable for dynamic, high

• Radiation Damage Irradiation-• Currently no facility lending itself to low energy irradiation• Some areas in front of beam absorbers at 400 MeV and 120

GeV• Low flux compared to near future targets• Areas not currently set-up to handle sample exchange,

temperature control, etc…• Target single pulse testing-

• Possibility exists at AP-0 Target Hall for NuMI/NOvA intensity pulse (~5e13 ppp) with smaller spot size (0.2 mm sigma)

• Would require extraction line re-configuration (re-installation of kicker system) 4/3/13PASI 2013 WG1 FNAL Capabilities 2

• Fairly capable basic materials testing lab (optical microscopy, tensile tester, hardness)

• Some more advanced equipment (SEM with EDS)• Equipment primarily used in support of SC magnet and RF cavity

development, but can accept low dose rate samples for analysis

• Although we have quite a bit of experience with handling highly activated components (100 R/hr range) for transport and installation, we do not have much experience with truly remote repair or high precision assembly work

• Hot cell just completed in new C-0 Remote Handling Facility• Transport Cask/Storage Bay system for handling large (4-8 m2)

Design/Analysis/Simulation

MARS 15 Monte-Carlo code to obtain energy deposition values in target/window for particular beam parameters.

Thermal and structural analysis performed in ANSYS

- Temperature dependent material properties

- Analysis of elastic and plastic material response

Normal stress at Be window edge

Future simulations will use the LS-DYNA software to model fracture/failure

Further validation with in beam experiments
