Remember,safegunhandlingdoesnotstopwithyourfirearm’smechanical“safety”devices,itstartsthere.Alwaystreatthisfirearmwiththerespectduealoaded,ready-to-firefirearm.

Somefirearmsdonothaveamechanicalsafety.Manytargetfirearms,lever-actionfirearmsandriflesdonothavemanual“safety”mechanisms.Thereforeitiscriticaltoreadandunderstandtheowner’smanualforeveryfirearmwhichexplainsthesafeoperationofthefirearm.

Whileitisagoodideato“test”yourfirearm’smechanical“safety”periodicallyforproperfunction,nevertestthe“safety”whileyourfirearmisloadedorpointedinanunsafedirection.

Ifyourfirearmisequippedwithadetachablemagazine,beawarethatremovingthemagazinedoesnotmeanyourfirearmiscompletelyunloaded,acartridgecouldbeinthechamber.Alwaysremovethemagazine,opentheactionandvisuallyinspectthechambertomakecertainthefirearmiscompletelyunloaded.

Asafirearmowner,youacceptasetofdemandingresponsibilities.Howseriouslyyoutaketheseresponsibilitiescanbethedifferencebetweenlifeanddeath.

Thereisnoexcuseforcarelessorabusivehandlingofanyfirearm.Atalltimeshandlethisfirearmandallotherfirearmswithintenserespectfortheirpowerandpotentialdanger.

Pleasereadandunderstandallofthecautions,warnings,notices,properhandlingproceduresandinstructionsoutlinedinthisowner’smanualbeforeusingyournewfirearm.

CompletelyunloadthefirearmasdescribedinSection15.1.Afterassuringyourselfthatthefirearmiscompletelyunloaded,openthebreechoractionandlookthroughthebarreltobesureitisclearofobstructions.Ifanobstructionisseen,nomatterhowsmallitmaybe,cleantheborewithacleaningrodandpatchasdescribedinSection18.1.ofthisowner’smanual.

Ifyourfirearmfailstofire,keepthemuzzlepointedinasafedirectionforaminimumof30seconds.Carefullyopentheactionandremovethecartridgefromthechamber,andcompletelyunloadthefirearmasdescribedinSection15.1.Iftheprimerisindented,thedefectivecartridgeshouldbedisposedofinawaythatcannotcauseharm.

Wearshootingglassestoprotectyoureyesfromflyingparticles.Allowproperdistance(eyerelief)betweenascopeandyoureyewhenfiringascopedrifle,rifleorshotgun.Donotuseunorthodoxshootingmethodsthatcouldcausetherearwardtraveloftheslideorboltofafirearmtocontactyoureyes,faceorhands.Alwayskeepasafedistancebetweenthemuzzleofyourfirearmandanypersonsnearby,asmuzzleblast,debrisandejectingshellscouldinflictseriousinjury.

Alwaysweareyeprotectionwhendisassemblingandcleaningyourrifletopreventthepossibilityofsprings,spring-tensionedparts,solventsorotheragentsfromcontactingyoureyes.

6 droppiNg or jArriNg A loAded FireArM CAN CAUSe AN ACCideNtAl diSCHArge. Thiscanoccurevenwiththe“safety”intheonsafepositionorthehammerinthedecockedposition.Beextremelycarefulwhilehuntingorduringanyshootingactivity,toavoiddroppinganyfirearm.

7 SHootiNg FroM elevAted SUrFACeS iS dANgeroUS.Doingsomayincreasetheriskofmishandlingafirearm.Thefollowingrulesshouldalwaysbeobserved.Alwaysmakecertainthatthesurfacebeingusedissafeandstable.Alwaysmakecertainthatyourfirearmisunloadedwhenitisbeingtakenupanddownfromthesurface.Alwaysmakecertainthatyourfirearmisnotdroppedfromthesurface,ordroppedwhileitisbeingtakenupordownfromthesurface.Remember,aloadedfirearmmaydischargewhendropped,evenwiththe“safety”intheonsafeposition.

Iftheprimerisnotindented,yourfirearmshouldbeexaminedbyaqualifiedgunsmithandthecauseofthemalfunctioncorrectedbeforefurtheruse.Glancedownthebarreltomakesurethattherearenoobstructionsinthebarrel.Ifthereisanobstruction,completelyclearthebarrelbeforeloadingandfiringagain.Failuretofollowtheseinstructionscancauseextensivedamagetoyourfirearmandpossibleseriousinjurytoyourselfandothers.

11 Never iNSert A CArtridge oF tHe iNCorreCt CAliber iNto ANy FireArM. Thecaliberofyourfirearmismarkedonthebarrel.Storeallcartridgesofdifferentcalibersincompletelyseparateandwell-markedcontainers.Neverstorecartridgesofmixedcalibersinacommoncontainerorinyourpockets.SeeSection11formoreinformationonthecorrectammunitionforyourfirearm.

TheFNHUSAFNARisagas-operated,semi-automaticrepeatingrifle.TheoriginsoftheFNARcanbetracedbacktoJohnM.Browning’sBAR,ariflethatservedwithdistinctionthroughbothWorldWars,Koreaandotherconflicts.Theergonomically-designedpistolgripstockoftheFNARisdesignedwithdimensionstosuitthoseoperatorsfamiliarwiththeM16/M4platform.

5.2. operAtioN

Whenthetriggerispulled,thefiringpinstrikestheprimerofthecartridge,resultingintheriflefiring.Gasesfromthefiredcartridgetraveldownthebarrelandsomeisdivertedintothegaspistonwhichthensendstheinertiablockrearwardtooperatethebolt.Duringtherearwardmovementofthebolt,theemptycartridgecaseisejectedoutoftheejectionport.Ifthereisacartridgeinthemagazine,theboltthenreturnsforwardbytheforceoftherecoilspring,picksupacartridgefromthemagazineandloadsitintothechamber,readytobefired.Ifthereisnotacartridgeinthemagazineduringthismovement,theboltlockengagesandtheboltremainsopen.

Variousexposedmetalpartsofthisriflehavebeencoatedatthefactorywitharustpreventativecompound.Beforeusingtherifle,cleantheanti-rustcompoundfromtheinsideofthebarrel,receiver,boltandtheaction/chamberareaswithahigh-quality,lightweightgunoilasexplainedinSection18.1.

Ifyourrifleistobestored,itisacceptabletoleavetherustpreventativecompoundontherifleandkeepitinitsoriginalpackaging.Neverfiretherifleuponpurchasewithoutcleaningitfirst.Iftheriflecontainshardenedgreaseorothersubstancesthatyoucannotremove,havetheriflecheckedbyyourdealerordepartmentalarmorer.

Forlawenforcementandmilitarypersonnel,refertotheproceduresofyourdepartment.

TheFNARrifleutilizesa“safety”locatedonthetriggerguardjustrearwardofthetrigger.(Figure2).Thislocationiseasilymanipulatedwiththeindexfingerofeitherhand.Withthe“safety”pushedcompletelytotheright,the

YourFNARwillfunctionbetterandmorereliablyoveralongerperiodoftimeifitisproperlymaintainedandkeptclean.Cleanyourfirearmaftereverydayofshooting,andmoreoftenifitbecomesexcessivelydirty.Aminimumcleaningincludeswipingdownthefirearmandoilingkeyparts.Regularmaintenancewillalsoincludecleaningthebarrel.

IfyouencounterafunctionproblembesuretogiveyourfirearmathoroughcleaningtoseeifitsolvestheproblembeforeseekingtheservicesoftheFNHUSAServiceFacilityinArnold,Missouri,oraqualifiedgunsmith.

2. Inspectthechamberandboreforpowderfouling.Anormalamountofpowderresiduecanbeexpectedandisnotserious.Itcanusuallyberemovedwithapatchsaturatedwithnitrosolvent.

Cleantheboreusinganappropriateriflecleaningrodwithatipandpatchofthecorrectcalibertoprovideasnugfitinthebore.Inserttherodandpatchintothebarrelatthemuzzleendandrunitbackandforthseveraltimes.Careshouldbeexercisedtoensurethatneitherthecleaningrodnorthehandlestrikesthecrownofthemuzzle,asdamagetothisareacanadverselyaffecttheaccuracyoftherifle.

Amuzzleprotectorcanbepurchasedseparatelyfromyourlocalfirearmsdealertohelpprotectthemuzzlecrownwhilecleaningthebarrelofyourrifle.
