FocalPointYou control the focus with FocalPoint. Create profes-sional selective focus and edge vignette effects that tell

your viewers where to look. With the intuitive FocusBug

controller its just like using a tilt-shift or selective focus

lens right inside of Photoshop. Set your sweet-spot and

then control the amount and kind of blur, even in 3D.

Then add an elegant vignette and control its density andsize. Its never been easier or faster to add the profes-

sional finishing touch to your image.

Getting StartedWhen should I use FocalPoint?FocalPoint is typically a used late in the digital workflow. Itis an embellishment like a frame and would be applied af-ter the image has been corrected for contrast and color andany retouching is completed. FocalPoint should be usedbefore sharpening. FocalPoint always creates a duplicate

layer to apply its effect to so you can always remove thislayer if you need to do more work in Photoshop.

What Files are Supported?FocalPoint supports any 8 or 16 bit RGB file that can beopened by Adobe Photoshop. This includes JPG, PSDand TIF as well as Raw files from digital cameras and manyother formats. If you routinely work in Grayscale orCMYK, simply convert your image RGB before using Fo-

calPoint. If you use Photoshop Elements you will need toconvert 16 bit images to 8 bit before using FocalPoint.

Launching FocalPointFocalPoint is an automation plug-in that you use inside ofthe host application, Adobe Photoshop or PhotoshopElements. It is not a standalone application. To launchFocalPoint you need to open your image in Photoshop and

do any of the following: Select FocalPoint from the onOne menu

Select FocalPoint from the File > Automate menu

If you have a preset saved and you wish to simply apply itto your current image without opening the main Focal-Point interface you can select the preset from the onOne

Menu. Please note Windows Photoshop Elements userswill not see an onOne menu. You can access FocalPointfrom the File >Automation tools menu instead.

By default, FocalPoint will create a copy of the current layerand apply its effects to that. You can also have it create amerged visible layer or a merged visible duplicate documentinstead. You can control this via the preferences or change iton the fly by holding down the shift key or Command (MacOS X) or Control (Windows) key when launching.

Important TermsThere are several terms used in this user guide and in othertutorials for FocalPoint that may not be familiar to all us-

ers. This is a brief list of them and their definitions.FocusBug: The FocusBug is the main control used in Fo-calPoint. It appears as a wireframe insect with a body, legsand antennae. You reposition the FocusBug by clickingand dragging its body. You adjust its size and rotation bypulling and rotating its legs. Finally you control theamount and type of blur as well as the feather with theantennae.

Sweet-spot: The sweet-spot is the area under the FocusBug

that is uneffected (protected) from the blur. You controlthe sweet-spot with the FocusBug.

Boca: The boca is the area outside of the sweet-spot is isblurred.

Tilt: Photographically, tilt is created by tilting the lensplane of camera to be not perpendicular to the film plane. This is accomplished by using speciality lenses such as tilt-shift lens or view cameras. This technique allows the pho-tographer greater control over the plane of focus and

depth of field. In FocalPoint the tilt control allows youvary the feather across the sweet-spot to simulate the tilteffect.

Vignette: A vignette is a darkening or lightening of theedges of an image. This can help focus the viewers eye.

Navigating the PreviewFocalPoint provides several tools to help you navigate your

image in the preview area. You can zoom and pan yourimage to scrutinize your settings and judge the quality ofyour results at your final output size.

Using the Zoom ToolZooming changes the magnification of view of your imageonscreen only. There are two ways to zoom in on an im-age:

    Zoom tool

Zoom presets in the Navigation pane

Using the Zoom tool and the Navigation pane are thesame operation except that the Zoom tool centers the newview where you clicked in the image.

To zoom on an image using the Zoom tool:1. Select the Zoom tool by clicking on the Zoom tool

icon, located on the FocalPoint toolbar at the lowerright side of the Work Area.

    2. Click on the image in the Preview window. A new, zoomed in view appears centered at the point whereyou clicked.

Using the Pan ToolPanning allows you to reposition the image inside the pre-

view area. There are two methods for panning an image: Clicking and dragging in the Navigation pane

    Pan tool

To pan an image with the Pan tool:

    1. Click the Pan tool icon on the FocalPoint toolbar atthe lower right side on the Work Area.

    2. Click and hold anywhere on the image in the Pre-view window, then move the cursor to view areasoutside the window. The red outline in the Naviga-tion pane shows you what portion of the image thePreview window is displaying.

Using the NavigatorThe Navigator pane gives you a complete birds-eye view ofyour image. The red region of interest indicator marks thearea of your image that is visible in the preview pane. Youcan pan your image by clicking and dragging inside thered region of interest indicator. At the top of the Navigatorpane are several Zoompresets. To activate aZoom preset simplyclick on it.

Getting Started with the FocusBugAt the heart of FocalPoint is the FocusBug, the main con-

trol for adjusting the size, shape and position of the sweet-spot. The sweet-spot is the area of the image that will re-main in-focus. The FocusBug is a fast way to adjust theprinciple controls of FocalPoint in a tactile way similar toadjusting a real lens. To adjust the FocusBug, first makesure you have the FocusBug tool selected in the toolbar.

Start by positioning the FocusBug in the center of the areathat you want to keep in focus. Then adjust the size andshape of the sweet-spot by pulling and rotating the legs of

the FocusBug. To do this click and hold at the end of anyleg. The end of the leg will turn blue to let you know thatyou may click to control that leg. It is often useful to turnon the grid when making these adjustments. This will al-low you to see the exact size and shape of the sweet-spot.

Once you have defined the sweet-spot with the FocusBug itis time to adjust the feather as well as the amount and typeof blur. This is easily accomplished by using the antennaeof the FocusBug. Start with the right hand antenna andstretch it as far as it will go. The length of the right an-tenna adjusts the amount of blur. With the amount set toits maximum wiggle the antenna up or down to adjust thefeather. The feather controls how soft the edge is betweenthe in-focus and out-of-focus regions. If you select a largefeather it may be necessary to readjust the size of thesweet-spot. Once the feather is set, adjust the length of theright antenna to the desired amount of blur.

Now adjust the type of blur by adjusting the angle of theleft antenna. Simply click and drag the left antenna to itslongest length and then wiggle it up and down to set thetype of blur. In most cases you will want to keep the lengthof the left antenna at its maximum. The length of the left

antenna controls the opacity of sweet-spot. Reducing theopacity allows the sweet-spot to be slightly blurred as well.Once you have adjusted the left antenna you can add avignette by going to the vignette pane. The amount sliderstarts in the middle at zero. Moving it to the left will add adark vignette. Moving to the right will add a white vi-gnette. You can also control its relative size by adjustingthe midpoint slider below the amount slider.

When you have adjusted all above controls, press the ap-ply button in the bottom right corner to apply the effectand return the results to Photoshop.

spot. You adjust the antennae the same as the legs. Click, hold and drag the antenna you wish to adjust.

The right antenna controls the amount and type of blur. The length of the antenna controls the amount of blur. The longer the antenna the more blur will be present. Theangle of the antenna in relation to the body controls thefeather or the transition between the sweet-spot and theboca. It is best to set the amountto 100% by pulling the right an-tenna to its longest position andthen adjust the feather at thissetting. This will make the

feather more obvious while youadjust it. Once the feather is setyou may adjust the amount toyour desired setting.

You can lock the antenna so you only adjust one of itsvariables at a time. By holding down the shift key whileadjusting an antenna it will be locked to adjust only theantenna length. You may hold down shift and command(Mac) Control (Windows) to constrain the adjust to the

angle instead. The left antenna controls the type, or mix or blurs as wellas the opacity of the sweet-spot. The length of the left an-tenna controls the opacity of the sweet-spot. In most cases

you will want the leave the left antenna at its longest, set-ting the opacity to 100%. This protects the sweet-spotfrom any blur. By reducing the opacity you may add a sub-

tle amount of blur to the sweet-spot as well. The angle ofthe left antenna controls the type or mix of blurs used. This is analogous the the motion slider in the blur pane. Atthe minimum setting the boca will appear to have a uni-form blur across it. As you increase the angle (amount) theblur will appear to have more motion or movement. Thissimulates the edge of the image circle where the boca be-comes more distorted. This is useful when you want amore dramatic look or you are trying to simulate certainlenses.

Adjusting 3D TiltYou can also use the Fo-cusBug to tilt the planeof focus just like using atilt-shift lens or viewcamera. This will varythe blur on each side ofthe sweet-spot. To con-trol the tilt click andhold the option (Mac) alt(Windows) key and thenclick and drag inside in-side the body of the Fo-cusBug. You will noticethe grid will appear andas you move your cursorinside the FocusBugsbody the grid will tilt in

three dimensions. Youcan reset the tilt by hold-ing option (Mac) alt(windows and double-clicking inside the FocusBugs body.

Unlike a tilt-shift lens or viewcamera movements, FocalPointcan only reduce the amount ofsharpness, not improve it.

Using Mask ViewMask view will enable a blackand white mask view of thesweet-spot. This can help youto see the bounds of the sweet-spot as well as understand theeffects of the the 3D tilt. Toenable the mask view go to theView menu and select Show/Hide Mask. You can also toggleit on and off with thecommand-M (Mac) or control-M (Windows) keyboardshort-cut. Mask view has no effect on the results of Focal-Point it is just a view mode to assist you in configuring theFocalPoint controls.

Adjusting the FocusBug opacityThe opacity of the FocusBug itself can be controlled to

minimize its interference with the preview image. To ad-just the opacity of the FocusBugs body go to the Viewmenu and select FocusBug Opacity. This is different thanthe aperture opacity which is adjusted in the Aperturepane.

Using the Aperture PaneThe Aperture Pane lives justbelow the Navigator and

contains the controls for theaperture shape as well as itsfeather and opacity. TheFeather and Opacity can alsobe adjusted with the Focus-

    Bug.

Aperture ShapeThe shape pop-up allows you to control the shape of the

sweet-spot. You can select from the round, the default orplanar. The FocusBug tool changes appearance from around body to a square body depending on which shape isused. The round shape is the default. This creates a roundor oblong sweet-spot. This is similar to using a selectivefocus lens. The boca will extend to all sides of the image.

The second shape, planar, simulates a tilt-shift or viewcamera appearance. It creates a sweet-spot that slices

through the image from one side to another.

FeatherThe feather controls how hard the edge of the sweet-spotis. The harder the edge, the moreobvious the transition is be-tween the sweet-spot and theboca. Generally a setting of 25-50 is used. The feather is also

controlled the angle of the rightantenna.

OpacityThe opacity controls the opacity of the sweet-spot. At asetting of 100%, the sweet-spot is completely protectedfrom the blur. As the opacity is decreased, the sweet-spotbegins to blur. In most cases you will want the opacity to

remain at 100%. The opacity is also controlled with theleft antenna.

Using the Blur PaneThe Blur pane is locatedunder the Aperture pane. Itcontains the blur amountand motion controls, bothof which can also be ad-justed with the FocusBug.

AmountThe amount slider controls the amount of blur in the bocaregion. Typical amounts are between 25-75%. The amountcan also be controlled with the right antenna.

MotionThe motion slider controls the amount of motion or dis-tortion in the boca. At the minimum setting the boca willappear to have a uniform blur across it. As you increase theangle (amount) the blur will appear to have more motionor movement. This simulates the edge of the image circlewhere the boca becomes more distorted. This is usefulwhen you want a moredramatic look or if you are

    trying to simulate certainlenses.

Using the VignettePaneThe Vignette pane is located under the Blur pane. It con-tains the controls for adding realistic vignettes to an im-age. Adding a vignette is a classic method for focusing theviewers eye on the subject. The shape of the vignette isalways round and will follow the sweet-spot.

LightnessThe lightness slider controls the amount and brightness ofthe vignette. At the neutral position in the middle of theslider there is not vignette. If you move the slider to a the

left, selecting a value of less that 50% will add a dark vi-gnette. At a value of 0%, the vignette will be completelyblack. If you move the slider to the right, selecting a valuehigher than 50% you will add a white vignette.

MidpointThe midpoint slider controls the relative size of the vi-gnette in relation to the sweet-spot. Low values add a largevignette that is tight aroundthe sweet-spot. Large values

add a smaller vignette thatonly effects the edge of theimage.

Using the FilmGrain PaneThe Film Grain pane is located under the Vignette pane. Itcontains the controls for adding Film Grain, or noise tothe boca. Adding Film Grain can replace grain lost in theboca during the blurring process maintaining a realisticimage. It is also useful to prevent posterization duringprinting. To toggle the Film Grain effect on and off use thetoggle in the right side of the pane title bar.

AmountThe Amount slider controls the amount, or opacity of the

Film Grain. Be sure to zoom into 1:1 (100%) when adjust-ing the amount.

Using PresetsPresets are great productiv-ity boost. They store allthe control settings in-cluding the relative Focus-Bug size and position. Pre-sets can be recalled insideFocalPoint for further ad-justment or can be addeddirectly from the onOnemenu inside of Pho-toshop. You can evenshare presets with other

users of FocalPoint.Saving PresetsTo create a preset of yourcurrent settings, press the plus + icon at the bottom ofthe Preset pane. You will be presented with New Preset dia-log. In this dialog you can name your preset, choose whichpreset category as well as put in a creator and description.

    Using Presets

You can load a preset by double-clicking its name in thePreset pane. When you load a preset, it will replace yourcurrent settings. Presets may also be used from the onOnemenu, allowing you to apply a preset to the currently se-lected image in Photoshop without loading the main Fo-calPoint interface, a great productivity booster.

Presets can also be used with Photoshop actions to helpautomate the application of FocalPoint to a batch of im-ages.

Sharing PresetsPresets can be shared with other users of FocalPoint. Toshare a preset, open the Preset folder by going to the Filemenu and selecting Open Presets Folder. Inside the Presets

folder are individual preset files for each preset. Simplycopy the desired preset to a new location or email messagethat you can send to your friend.

To install a preset, just drop the preset file from your friendinto the Presets Folder of FocalPoint. Place it into a cate-gory folder that you prefer for easy finding. Be sure to re-launch FocalPoint to use the new preset.

Masking OptionsThe Masking Options, located in the tool bar, gives you theability to add a layer mask to the resulting layer that Fo-calPoint creates when it returns to Photoshop. By painting

with black on the layer mask you can selectively blend Fo-calPoint results with the layer underneath it. For exampleif you applied a soft-focus effect, you could paint on alayer mask to reveal or protect areas such as a persons eyesor other important details from the soft focus effect. Byadding an empty layer mask and painting with black youreveal information from the underly-ing layer. Below are instructions onusing the Masking Op-tions:

Step 1. Open your im-age in FocalPoint

Step 2. Adjust the Fo-cusBug and other con-trols until you are satis-fied.

Step 3. In the toolbar, check the Add LayerMask check-box andpress Apply.

    16/20

Step 4. Back in Photoshop you will see the new layer, named FocalPoint #1 and you will see a black layer maskassociated with it. FocalPoint will automatically select your

brush tool, white paint and the layer mask so you can startto paint the effect in right away.

For best results paint with a brush that has a soft edge andan opacity of around 50%. If you make a mistake you canswitch your color to black and paint over your mistake. Youcan view the mask by itself by holding down option (alt) andclicking on the mask icon in the layers palette.

PreferencesThe FocalPoint preferences control how FocalPoint createslayers with your files. Preferences are persistent, like aswitch and maintain their settings until you change them. You can access the Preferences from the Photoshop menuon a Mac OS X system or the Edit menu on a Windowssystem.

Apply FocalPoint to:The Apply FocalPoint to options controls what layer in-formation is sent to FocalPoint for processing. The optionsare copy of the current layer, new merged visible layer andduplicate merged document. Note that FocalPoint alwayscreates a new layer for its results so that it is neverdestructive.

Preferences will take effect until the next time youopen FocalPoint.

    Option Why to use

Copy of Current Layer:Creates a copy of the cur-

rent layer and returns theresults of FocalPoint tothat layer, placed abovethe original target layer. This option will duplicatean existing layer mask.

Use this option if your im-age has only a singe layer

or if you wish to only ef-fect a single layer, includ-ing objects like text on atransparent background. An existing layer mask ismaintained to the resultsof FocalPoint will only ap-pear to effect the un-masked area.

Stamped Visible Layer:Creates a new layer at thetop of your layers paletteand merges (stamps) allthe layers beneath it tothis new layer. This createsa single layer composite ofyour image and protectsall the original layers for

future editing. Any layermasks, text layers, adjust-ment layers and layerstyles will be rendered.Hidden layers will not beseen.

Use this option if you havea complex image and youwant the results of Focal-Point to effect the entireimage, rather than a selec-tion. This is a great way tosimplify your work on acomplex file or to createmultiple looks in a single

file for client review. Youcan do this by simply turn-ing off each FocalPointlayer and then runningFocalPoint again to createmultiple layers, each witha different look that can beturned on or off at any-time while still maintain-ing the original layers.

    Option Why to use

Merged Duplicate File:Creates a duplicate docu-

ment of your image andreduces it down to a singlelayer. Any layer masks, text layers, adjustmentlayers and layer styles willbe rendered. Hidden layerswill not be seen.

Use this option if you pre-fer to keep your original

layered file separate fromFocalPoint. Each time youlaunch you FocalPoint itwill create a new docu-ment, keeping the originalfile as is.

Batch ProcessingFocalPoint can applied to a batch of images in severalways. The first is by using the last used preset from theonOne menu. If you have several similar images open inPhotoshop you can apply the last used setting to eachopen image by repeatedly using the last used preset. The

second method is to use an action and the PhotoshopBatch dialog.

Recording an Action & Using the Batch DialogThe FocalPoint batch engine can be accessed from eitherthe onOne menu directly or from inside of FocalPointfrom the File menu. The only difference between these op.

    1. Open the first image you that you would like to re-

size. Then go the Actions palette and select CreateNew Action, name it and click the Record button.

    2. Launch FocalPoint. Adjust the controls and thenpress Apply.

    3. Press the stop recording button at the bottom of theActions palette.

    4. Open Photoshops batch dialog from the File >Automate menu. The action you just recored will beselected by default at the top. In the source section,
