CTP ELECTRICAL TRAINING

The Domestic Electrical Installation industry is currently upgrading the qualifications needed to enter the industry.

We are currently in discussion with awarding bodies and the providers of Domestic Installation Registration Schemes with the aim of continuing to provide Service leavers with the opportunity to enter this Industry as a second career.

The current status of courses is as follows:

DOMESTIC ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION We will be introducing a new course in the future and we hope to be able to announce transitional arrangements for those starting the course after 1 January 2012 in the very near future. If you are doing a DEI course before 1 January 2012, you are not affected.

CERTIFICATE IN DESIGN, ERECTION AND VERIFICATION OF ELECTRICAL INSTALLATIONS We aim to continue delivering this course into next year, however, those wishing to take it in 2012 will have to register before the end of this year.

INSPECTION & TESTING (CITY & GUILDS 2391) City & Guilds are announcing new Inspection & Testing qualifications at the end of November 2011. They have, however, agreed that we can continue to deliver the existing qualification for the interim period and we aim to deliver the new qualification as soon as possible.

Success Story of Alan Brace From Army Major to Senior Parliamentary Assistant Outcome

Following his CWA, Alan attended two interviews for the position and was successful. The position required him to relocate, which was not a

decision he took lightly but this was a requirement of the job and luckily he had the full support of his family.

Now settled into the role, Alan’s day-to-day work is extremely varied, and includes project management, constituent’s case work, attending meetings and acting as Stephen Barclay’s representative, along with manage-ment of a member of staff.

Alan uses many skills developed during his military career in civilian life, and these include communication, IT, people and leadership skills. Alan says, “If you sell yourself correctly with a good CV and covering letter, and have transferrable skills, you should compete equally as well if not better than your civilian counter-parts.”

Alan advises other Service leavers to have the confidence to seek out new opportunities: “Do not sell yourself short but at the same time be reasonable about salary expectations. Project yourself as an experienced individual with many transferrable skills and attributes, as a person willing to roll sleeves up when needed and to get the job done.”

Background Major Alan George Brace left the Army in December 2010, having served for 31 years with the Royal Armoured Corps. During his military career, Alan undertook a number of different roles and his parent unit was The Queen’s Royal Hussars.

During his time in the Army, Alan completed an Open University degree, obtaining a BA (Hons) in Social Policy, and also gained a number of other qualifications including NVQ level 4 in Management and NVQ level 3 in Training and Development, to name a few. These qualifica-tions, coupled with skills in IT, communication, leadership and project management developed during his Service career, stood Alan in very good stead for leaving the Army.

Resettlement As part of his resettlement, Alan attended the Career Transition Workshop and the Financial Aspects of Resettlement briefing. Both were extremely helpful as they taught him to write an effective CV and covering letter, and introduced him to the RightJob website. Through these he secured his next employment and made plans for his future financial security.

Having seen an advert on RightJob for the position of Senior Parliamentary Assistant to Stephen Barclay, MP for North East Cambs, Alan went on to complete a Civilian Work Attachment (CWA) with Mr Barclay. Alan found this to be of great benefit when applying for the role; he worked in the Houses of Parliament using specialist IT software, meeting prospective colleagues, discussing work responsibilities and drafting casework responses.

Think about what you do and say Your interview may consist of a formal question and answer session or may take the shape of an informal chat; whatever the style of the interview, what you say should be packed with your achievements using examples to demonstrate your suitability for the position.

It is important to take note of your body language; ensure that your posture is upright, and that your arms are not folded, as this will give off a ‘closed’ impression. Eye contact with the interviewer is of vital importance, and shows that you are interested and engaged. Remember to smile!

Leave a good impression Leave the interview on a positive note, with a smile and a hand-shake. Thank the interviewer for their time and tell them you look forward to hearing from them. Depending on the job you are applying for, a short note or email following up after the interview may also be appropriate and help you stand out from the other candidates.

Do get a good night’s sleep prior to the interview. Don’t put yourself down – be confident & positive. Do walk into the interview with confidence, and employ a moderately firm handshake. Do allow the interviewer ask the whole question. Don’t try and be the life and soul; although your personality should shine through, the interview is about your ability to do the job above all. Do prepare your own questions; they should relate to the position and company and will show your interest. Don’t doubt your ability to succeed: sell yourself and show the employer that you are the right person for the job.

Prepare well! If done properly, you will feel more relaxed and look as if you are meant to be there.

FIRST AND LAST IMPRESSIONS

You only get one chance to make a first impression, and in today’s world of work there are a number of key factors which help to build this impression at interview. These are:

Appearance – your attire and presentation Eye Contact – including your smile rate Body Language – your posture and hand gestures Preparation – your responses to questions and the questions you ask your interviewer These points are fairly obvious but it is valuable to understand why they are considered important. It is not unusual for larger companies to have their own psychological experts, and it is commonly known that the first impression of a candidate acts like a filter in the mind of the interviewer.

If you ask any interviewer for two things they can re-member, they will almost always recount the first and last impressions they have. Other memories will follow if you have done your job properly! Below are some tips to ensure that the all-important first impression is a positive one! Arrive early This gives you time to settle into the environment and gather your thoughts. Use this time to read through your notes, check your appearance and ensure you have everything you need for the interview. Most people are anxious in these situations, and allowing yourself time to adjust and relax always works in your favour. Lateness will be interpreted as lack of motivation and an unwillingness to succeed. Despite what an inter-viewer may tell you to your face, that first judgement has already been made. If you are going to be late, be sure to call the employer and explain. Consider your appearance You need to look as if you fit in with this organisation; dress smartly and appropriately for the job.

Carry a folder with anything you feel you may need, including a fresh copy of your CV and any notes you have made. No one minds you referring to notes, although it is always polite to ask. Carrying a folder also gives you something to do with your hands. Why a folder and not a briefcase? Outsiders walk around with briefcases. You are already looking as if you are meant to be there!
