Fire Chief for a Day
On October 23, 2019, Cooper Bauer, Gregory Skelton and Nolan Anderson were picked up from Rocky Mountain Elementary School and whisked away in a fire truck to Kapp’s Pizza where they were treated to lunch. Also in attendance were Chief Kortmeyer, Deputy Chief Nyuli, Mayor McKerracher, Councillor Fairbairn, Councillor Robinson.
The excitement for the boys continued that evening as they also got to attend Wednesday night fire practice with the rest of the Elkford Fire Rescue crew.

Ways to Reduce Plastic Use
As we all know, plastic waste, from plastic bags to toothbrushes-has become a huge environmental concern worldwide. We can all help to reduce the amount of plastics by trying to reuse plastic or reduce plastic consumption. Look for new tips in each edition of the Elkford Focus. You are probably aware of some already, but hopefully some of these ideas will be new and easy to do:
-use cloth bags when shopping -carry your own reusable steel or ceramic beverage
container -don’t buy beverages in plastic bottles, glass is great! -package your leftovers in glass containers – reuse
glass jars (e.g. pickle jars).

Random Thoughts from Father David of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church
Often I walk my dog close to one of the railway lines that run through our valley. I am always amazed at the length of the trains. As I watch these trains go by, sometimes there will be one coal car that has a particularly squeaky wheel and on occasion, the sound can be awful and I wonder if the train will ever get to Vancouver!
As the train slips out of sight I start thinking about the small miracle that enables all the components of the train’s engines and its cars to work together to get this incredibly large load to its destination. Then I start thinking about the complexity of the mine that filled the cars with so many tons of coal and the complexity at the other end—the ships that will take it on to its final destination and the factories that receive the coal. At that point I often sit down to give my brain a rest.
When I look at the world, I so often just look at myself and what is immediately around me, but I know that we live in an incredibly complicated and interconnected world. I wish I could be a bit more aware of the squeaky wheel on the other side of the globe that is in some small way affecting my life. Then perhaps I could also become aware of all the other people—near and far—who actually enable me to have such a wonderful life in this most beautiful valley.
ELKFORD HUNTER WINS NATIONAL HONOUR
Springfield, Missouri – Dale Webber of Elkford, BC, was recently honoured by the Boone and Crockett Club, the United State’s most prestigious conservation and big game hunting organization. Dale was presented a Third Award for his Canada moose at the Boone and Crockett Club’s 30th Big Game Awards Banquet in Springfield, Missouri on August 3, 2019.
Every three years, the finest North American big game trophies accepted into Boone and Crockett Club’s big game records-keeping program are assembled for public display followed by a banquet and award presentations. A Judges Panel comprised of Boone and Crockett Official Measurers verified each trophy’s final score, which is the sum total of a comprehensive series of measurements taken of antlers, horns, skulls, and tusks, depending on the species. Trophy size is a direct reflection of habitat quality, age, and low mortality.
The Boone and Crockett system of scoring big game trophies originated in 1906 as a means of recording details on species thought to be disappearing because of rampant habitat loss, market hunting, and unregulated harvest. Science-based conservation efforts led and funded by license-buying hunters brought those species from vanishing to flourishing. The existence of large male specimens remains a classic gauge of successful game management and conservation strategies.
In addition to its prestigious history and tradition, the Boone and Crockett Club’s records program is strongly associated with the highest tenets of Fair Chase and ethical hunting. Dale’s Canada moose scored 213 Boone and Crockett points and ranks number 87 all-time for that species. It will be listed; along with 4,462 other outstanding trophies in the Boone and Crockett Club’s 30th Big Game Awards book available this fall. ~Big Game Records media release, submitted by
