Opening Remarks: Dean Ken Colwell and Professor Michael Gendron

9:30-10:30 Harnessing Risk: A Review of Travelers’ 2015 Business Risk Index Results Michael Klein, President of Personal Insurance for Travelers

As a way to identify and provide insight into the top concerns facing small, medium and large businesses, Travelers launched its second annual Business Risk Index. This new national index allows Travelers to track the risks business decision makers believe pose the biggest threat to the success of their businesses and help identify ways to help manage those risks.

The survey polls more than 1,100 business decision makers each year, providing a holistic, annual snapshot of risk sentiments from companies of various sizes and industry segments. As a company with a 160-year history in managing risks, this was the perfect opportunity for us to help businesses and corporations plan for and protect against short-term and long-term exposures which include serious potential disasters.

The participants will get a review of this year’s top risks identified in the 2015 Business Risk Index, followed by a discussion of related opportunities in insurance and financial services.

10:30-11:00 Banking and the State of Connecticut The View from a Former Banking Commissioner Howard Pitkin, Retired State of Connecticut Commissioner of Banking CCSU American Savings Bank Endowed Chair in Banking

The financial services industry is challenged today like no other time in recent history. Intense competition exists between service providers in an environment of interest rates that have been held at near zero since 2008. Since the Great Recession the amount of government regulation that has been created further burdens these institutions. Technology and cybersecurity pose additional challenges in a world where even foreign governments are seen as a threat to penetrate even the most sophisticated firewalls designed to protect sensitive information about customers. In spite of rightsizing that has eliminated jobs from unprofitable areas, financial services remains a dynamic industry as it prepares to meet the financial needs of young Americans who represent the largest customer base in the US.

11:00-Noon IFS Industry Update: What’s Inside IFS? Trends & Jobs Susan Winkler, Executive Director, Connecticut IFS Cluster Stephan Christiansen, Managing Director, Conning William MacDonald, Senior Vice President and Chief Audit Executive, XL Catlin James Bedard, Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Northeast Region, UnitedHealthcare The insurance and financial services [IFS] industry in Connecticut, the nation’s insurance capital, comprises 110 domestic insurance companies and over 1,200 non-domestic insurers. Employees of IFS – numbering more than 110,000 – design new products and services, manage data and risk, support claims and provide customer service par excellence. This panel will provide insight into what’s inside the walls of the IFS industry – the challenges and opportunities facing the industry today and the types of jobs and skills needed to sustain the industry for the future.

FOCUS ON INDUSTRYInsurance, Banking, Financial Service (IBFS) Competencies Based E-Portfolio

The e-portfolio is based on three major areas: 1) Academic, 2) Technical, and 3) Professional. The list below shows the competencies by area that were identified by the IBFS industry. As you create your e-portfolio each artifact should be placed in the correct competency area and named appropriately so it is easy to find. The purpose of the portfolio is so your competencies can be documented using representative artifacts. These competencies represent what industry leaders have told the CCSU School of Business they desire in high-value new hires and are composed of skills, knowledge, and general competencies.

ACADEMIC COMPETENCIES• Industry Knowledge • Banking & Insurance “101” – knowledge of basic industry practice and theory • Regulatory environment • Regulatory history • Securities Act of ’34 • Sarbanes Oxley • Dodd Frank • Current federal and state laws • Current and historical trends • Firms in the industry • Current economy & industry • Different financial services/products and activities within industry • Major-specific knowledge applicable to the industry • Definition of careers/occupations and career paths in industry• Critical Thinking• Analytical Skills • Problem solving • Real business cases • Business plan for self • Executive in residence • Enterprise risk management• Creativity-Innovation • Creating new financial services product• Writing Skills • Writing with proper grammar

TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES• Computer/Database Management Skills • Excel • Pivot tables • SQL • Access • PowerPoint • Project Management Software

Page 12: FOCUS ON INDUSTRY - CCSU · FOCUS ON INDUSTRY . Insurance, Banking and Financial Services (IBFS) 2015 Boot Camp Agenda. PLEASE COMPLETE REGISTRATION FORM AND TURN IN TODAY. TWICE

• Professional Organization Membership & Certification Pursuit • CPCU • PLUS • CFA • Series 6, 7, 63

PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCIES• Communication Skills • Personal communication of value • Communicative flexibility – ability to adjust communication style to fit the audience • Ability to “pitch an idea” • Listening skills • Presentation skills • Interviewing skills • Networking skills • Traditional • Social Media• Workplace Skills • Project management • Time management • Portfolio management experience • Initiative • Extra-curricular involvement • Team work skills • Matrix management • Ethics • Personal accountability • Leadership skills • Conflict management/resolution • Self-awareness • Multi-tasking • Internship/coop experience • Emotional Intelligence

The rule of thumb is that (1) the artifact goes in the appropriate competency area (or more than one) and (2) the artifact name indicates the competency you are documenting.

Examples: 1) In the Academic Area you might include an artifact titled “Industry Knowledge; Regulatory Environment; History; Sarbanes Oxley.” The artifact might be a certificate from a course you took or a paper you wrote on this topic that you did well on. 2) In the Technical Area you might include an artifact titled “Computer: Access” and include a statement about a course you took in Access, the grade you got and a summary of what you learned in the course. 3) In the Professional Area you might include an artifact titled “Workplace Skills: Project Management.” The artifact might be a statement that took a project management class, got a B+ and did a certain project.
