WESTERN REGIONAL CONFERENCE ON PROBLEM GAMBLING AWARENESS

FOCUS ON THE FUTURE

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

Dear Prospective Conference Attendees:

The 7th annual Focus on the Future, a Western Regional Conference on Problem Gambling Awareness, is an opportunity for us to learn from experts across the country on prevention and impactful programs and services. In addition, it is a place where you can exchange your ideas, experiences, and knowledge to become a collective voice in raising awareness on problem gambling and the importance of gambling responsibly.

What does the future hold for our communities in regard to responsible gaming and problem gambling? At this conference, treatment and healthcare providers, gaming industry members, educators, researchers, prevention specialists, and policy makers will join together to collaborate on one of our state’s most serious issues. Each has an important part to play in sharing relevant messages about problem gambling in our communities.

Together, we can learn more about the resources needed to assist those negatively affected by problem gambling and help reduce the stigma surrounding this very serious disorder. I invite you to attend Focus on the Future. We can make a difference in our communities, state, nation, and world.

Sincerely,

Brad Owen Washington State Lieutenant Governor

Honorary Chair

CONFERENCE COORDINATOREvergreen Council on Problem Gambling (ECPG) provides treatment, training, and awareness programs and services about problem and responsible gambling. We provide confidential support for Washington State residents through our 24-hour Problem Gambling Helpline (800.547.6133) and public awareness, education, prevention, and resource development services for individuals, families, employers, students, the gaming industry, and business and community groups. ECPG also provides training and certification programs and continuing education units (CEUs) for treatment professionals.

Gambling is a personal choice. And for the majority of residents in the Pacific Northwest, gambling is a source of fun, recreation, and entertainment. But for some, gambling can become a serious problem that leads to broken marriages and relationships, bankruptcy, depression, or even suicide. If you or someone you love struggles with a gambling problem, there is hope. Help starts today by calling 800.547.6133.

PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS

RECOVERY COACH ACADEMY (30 TOTAL CEUs)Jim Wuelfing, PhD, CPP-R, NRPP, Director of Prevention and Recovery, Massachusetts Council on Compulsive Gambling, and Ruby Takushi, PhD, Private Practice and Director of Programs, Recovery CafeMonday, April 21–Thursday, April 24 *Includes two evenings*

A recovery coach serves as a personal guide and mentor by helping to remove barriers and obstacles that restrain a person from a successful recovery. Recovery coaches do not provide clinical services; however, they sometimes work with people experiencing difficult emotional and physical situations during the recovery process. The training will explain the various roles played by a recovery coach and provide participants with tools and resources useful in providing recovery support services. Participants will gain a basic understanding of substance use and mental disorders, crisis intervention, and how to respond in crisis situations. In addition, skills and tools on effective communication, motivational enhancement strategies, recovery action planning, cultural competency, and recovery ethics will be offered.

BASIC PROBLEM GAMBLING COUNSELOR TRAINING (16 TOTAL CEUs)Isabelle Duguay, MA Ps, LPCC, PCGC Private Practice, Harmonique Living, LLC

Wednesday, April 23–Thursday, April 24This session serves as an introduction to problem and pathological gambling disorders. Participants will learn about the scope and prevalence of gambling and problem gambling on a national scale, risk factors, and how the increased availability of gambling over the past 10 years has affected the prevalence of gambling problems in the United States.

BASIC PROBLEM GAMBLING COUNSELOR TRAINING CONTINUED

The DSM-5 criteria for pathological gambling will be discussed and participants will learn practical application of the most commonly used screening and diagnostic tools, including the South Oaks Gambling Screen. This session outlines the types and sub-types of gamblers and several approaches to the treatment of problem gamblers. Participants will also learn about the disorders that most often co-occur with problem gambling. Effects of the disorder on family and loved ones will also be discussed.

RITUAL, STORY, HEALING: TECHNIQUES FOR INTEGRATING CLIENT SPIRITUAL BELIEF INTO THE COUNSELING PROCESS (8 CEUs)Alan Basham, MA Senior Lecturer, Eastern Washington University

Thursday, April 24This workshop will present two aspects of integrating client spirituality into the healing process of counseling. Participants will review the competencies for spiritual integration developed by recognized leaders on the topic at the annual Summit on Spirituality held at several national conferences of the American Counseling Association. These include recognition of the client’s beliefs, counselor awareness of their own spiritual journey, and the use of specific techniques to help the client with this spiritual inclusion as they grow. The second focus of the workshop will be a thoughtful consideration and experience of several spiritual practices in counseling, with an emphasis on the development of personally meaningful ritual to aid in resolution of emotional pain.
