1 Using this Manual

1.1 About this Manual This manual provides instructions for installing the FocusJet™ nebulizer to Thermo Scientific™ Dionex™ Corona™ Veo™ and Corona Veo RS detectors and Vanquish Charged Aerosol Detectors VH-D20 and VF-D20.

This guide is intended as a supplementary document to the Operating Manual. Refer to the Operating Manual for the detector for general safety information on the device, and the conventions used throughout this manual regarding safety messages, notices and typography.

Keep these instructions with the Operating Manual for the detector for quick reference.

1.2 Safety Symbols and Signal Words This manual contains safety messages to prevent injury of the persons using the detector. The safety symbols and signal words in this manual include the following:

Always be aware of the safety information. Do not proceed until you have fully understood the information and consider the consequences of what you are doing.

CAUTION Indicates a hazardous situation that, if not avoided, could result in minor or moderate injury.

WARNING Indicates a hazardous situation that, if not avoided, could result in serious injury.

2 Installation This chapter describes how to install the FocusJet nebulizer to the detector.

2.1 Safety Guidelines for Installation Pay attention to the following safety guidelines:

CAUTION—Sharp Tip of Nebulizer Capillary

The capillary inside the nebulizer that protrudes from the nebulizer tip is sharp and may be fragile. The nebulizer capillary can cause personal injury and damage to the capillary. To avoid personal injury, always wear safety glasses when handling the nebulizer. Do not touch the nebulizer tip. Handle the nebulizer with care.

CAUTION—Escaping Gas

Gas can escape from open gas connections when the detector gas flow and/or the gas supply is turned on. The escaping gas can pose a health and safety risk.

Make sure that the detector gas flow and the gas supply are turned off before you remove the nebulizer, disconnect the gas tubes or remove the gas filter assembly from the detector.

Turn on the gas supply and detector gas flow only when the nebulizer is installed, the components in the gas flow path are properly connected, and the protective cover of the gas filter assembly is installed.

NOTICE—Sensitive Nebulizer

The nebulizer is highly sensitive to contamination and damage. Observe the following safety notes:

• The nebulizer is highly sensitive to contamination. Even minute particles on the nebulizer can lead to contamination and poor detector performance. Always wear clean-room gloves when you install or remove the nebulizer.

• The capillary inside the nebulizer may be fragile and subject to mechanical vibrations during transport. If the nebulizer was packaged separately, visually inspect the nebulizer surfaces and the nebulizer tip prior to installation. For pictures of the nebulizer, see the Preparations below.

• Operating the nebulizer with a gas pressure other than the pressure specified for this nebulizer can cause a loss in performance of the nebulizer and the detector. After installation of the nebulizer, set the nebulizer gas pressure to the pressure that is specified for your nebulizer. The nebulizer gas pressure is defined on the gas pressure certificate that is shipped with the nebulizer.

2.2 Installing the Nebulizer Parts and additional items required

• Clean-room gloves (powder-free)

• FocusJet nebulizer with dedicated nebulizer gas pressure certificate

• Optional: Deionized water

Preparations

1. Wear the clean-room gloves.

2. If a nebulizer is installed in the detector a) Remove the old nebulizer from the detector. Refer to the

instructions in the Operating Manual for the detector.

b) Make sure that detector operation is stopped, this includes:

♦ The detector has been flushed to remove any residues from the flow paths.

♦ Pump flow, gas flow and gas supply to the detector are turned off.

♦ The detector is turned off with its main power switch, and the power cord is disconnected.

For instructions, refer to the Operating Manual for the detector.

3. Upon initial installation of the detector Locate the nebulizer to be installed.

♦ Vanquish VH-/VF-D20 detectors: The nebulizer is shipped in a foam insert behind the doors of the VH-/VF-D20 detector. Remove the nebulizer from behind the doors.

♦ Corona Veo/Veo RS detectors: The nebulizer is shipped in a foam insert on the inner side of the white cover on the Corona Veo (RS) detector. Take off the white cover and remove the foam insert with the nebulizer from the white cover.

Follow these steps

1. If a dust seal plug is installed on the detector Remove the dust seal plug from the opening for the nebulizer on the interior front of the detector.

Figure 3: Dust seal plug installed in the nebulizer opening

2. Insert the nebulizer in the opening in the front panel of the detector. Observe the following:

TIP To facilitate inserting the nebulizer in the nebulizer opening, moisten the sealing ring on the sealing bushing with deionized water.

♦ The nebulizer tip must point to the opening in the middle of the nebulizer opening. Avoid the nebulizer tip from touching the sides of the nebulizer opening, as this can damage the tip.

♦ Mind the correct orientation of the nebulizer: The gripping sides of the nebulizer are on the top and bottom side of the handle. The protruding sides for attachment are on the left and right side of the handle. See the picture below.

Figure 4: Correct orientation of the nebulizer for installation

3. Push the nebulizer into the opening until the spray pipe and sealing bushing are completely in the opening. The nebulizer handle must lie flush against the nebulizer opening.

2.3 Gas Pressure Setting for the Nebulizer

NOTICE Operating the nebulizer with a gas pressure other than the pressure specified for this nebulizer can cause a loss in performance of the nebulizer and the detector. After installation of the nebulizer, set the nebulizer gas pressure to the pressure that is specified for your nebulizer. The nebulizer gas pressure is defined on the gas pressure certificate that is shipped with the nebulizer.

Before operating the detector, verify and if required adjust the gas pressure setting for the nebulizer. The nebulizer must only be operated with the gas pressure setting stated on the certificate that was shipped with the nebulizer.

Preparations

1. Connect the power cord to the power-inlet connector on the detector.

2. Turn on the detector with its main power switch.

Follow these steps

1. Check if the gas pressure on the nebulizer certificate corresponds to the pressure set in the detector. For instructions, refer to the Operating Manual for the detector. ♦ If the gas pressure corresponds to the gas pressure on the

nebulizer certificate, continue with step 3, page 13.

♦ If the gas pressure deviates from the pressure on the nebulizer certificate, adjust the gas pressure. See next step.

2. Adjust the nebulizer gas pressure to the pressure that is specified on the nebulizer certificate. Monitor the gas pressure as it reaches the setpoint.

♦ Vanquish VH-/VF-D20 detectors: In Chromeleon, on the Command window for the detector, set the nebulizer gas pressure (Gas Regulator Pressure Nominal).

♦ Corona Veo RS detectors: On the detector display, navigate to the Gas Regulator screen. Set nebulizer gas pressure under Setpoint.

Page 13: FocusJet Nebulizer · • Operating the nebulizer with a gas pressure other than the pressure specified for this nebulizer can cause a loss in performance of the nebulizer and the

♦ Corona Veo detectors: On the detector display, navigate to the Gas Regulator screen. On the rear side of the detector, adjust the nebulizer gas pressure using the gas regulator knob.

For details on adjusting the nebulizer gas pressure, refer to the Operating Manual for the respective detector.

3. Turn on the gas flow. Refer to the Operating Manual for the detector.

4. If required by internal regulatory department

TIP Instrument requalification is typically unnecessary after replacing the nebulizer, but may be required by your regulatory department.

a) Perform the detector-specific Performance Qualification (PQ) tests using the Chromeleon software. For details, refer to the Operational and Performance Qualifications manual.

b) VH-/VF-D20 detectors only: If PQ is performed, in Chromeleon, execute the QualificationDone command. The command is listed under CAD_Wellness.
