Caterpillar Launches F2-Series Backhoe Loaders

Caterpillar is building on its highly successful range of F-Series backhoe loaders with the introduction of the new F2-Series range of machines. The new models feature an all-new operator’s environment, and engine technology enhances machine performance and saves fuel. The cab has been restyled for a more modern look and has been designed throughout with the operator in mind, including enhanced visibility to the loader attachment when at full height and reduced in-cab sound levels, to 74 dBA.

Machine-control ergonomics have been improved with a new telescopic/tilt steering column, and the differential-lock control has been repositioned to the loader controller. Pilot-operated machines feature new multi-positional excavator controls that enable operators to adjust to the most comfortable operating position, reducing fatigue. A forward/reverse controller is built into the loader controller for added convenience.

The cab features a new step design with

reduced height for added cab access/egress safety and a bottom step that is resiliently mounted to prevent damage from debris. The new cab is designed to allow operators to turn easily between loader and excavating positions, and an air-suspension seat provides all-day comfort, especially when using the optional heated version in cold weather. A new LCD display provides information needed to monitor machine performance, new switches feature improved back lighting for easy use in all ambient-light conditions, and longer-life LED rear lights are now used.

The new pantograph front-screen wiper increases the swept area for enhanced forward visibility and is complemented with a full-width, perforated sun visor. Except for the curved front window, all other glass areas are flat, enabling quick, low-cost replacement.

Connectivity is a vital requirement for today’s machine operator, and the F2-Series provides an available radio with blue-tooth

connectivity, facilitating communication with job-site personnel. A new keypad security system provides added protection for the machine, and a choice of cellular or satellite technology is available for use with the ProductLink™ telematics system for tracking machine location and operating parameters.

Stage IV emission solutionThe new backhoes use the Cat® C4.4 ACERT™

engine with a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) exhaust after-treatment system. SCR is a proven, reliable, widely accepted technology for controlling nitrogen-oxide (NOx) emissions by allowing exhaust to react with diesel exhaust fluid in the presence of a catalyst. No operator intervention is required to support the SCR system other than replenishing the DEF tank.

If low fuel consumption is important, the operator can elect ECO mode, enabling proficient performance and controllability at a fuel-saving lower engine speed. Depending on the model, engine-power choices include 68hp, 87hp, 93hp and 108hp configurations. For added convenience, a remote jump-start system is standard equipment.

30 years of backhoe successCaterpillar is celebrating 30 years of backhoe

loader production in 2015, having produced more than 300,000 machines that are working globally. The introduction of the F2-Series ensures future success, with innovative changes that enhance operator comfort, meet the applicable emission standards, improve productivity, and reduce owning and operating costs.

a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system for control of nitrogen-oxide emissions to meet Tier 4 Final/Stage IV emissions standards.

The SCR system requires no maintenance other than periodic addition of DEF. The DEF level is easily monitored via the digital gauge provided on the standard Advanced Display. All D2 models have a lockable door cover for the DEF fill point, located on the right side of

the machine. The DEF fill is identified with the industry-standard blue cap and has a smaller filler neck to deter filling with an

incorrect fluid. Sealing around the rear engine

enclosure and cooling package is now standard for all D2 models. The standard sealing package (rear engine door, rear bumper, cooling package grill, cab/cooling package) provides enhanced protection against material ingestion in applications with a high volume of airborne debris. The hydraulically driven demand fan operates only when required, saving fuel and reducing sound levels.

An optional reversing fan provides added value to customers operating in high debris applications. The reversing fan, with both an automatic and momentary purge capability, aids in the removal of material from the rear door intake screen to maintain maximum air flow to the cooling system.

Premium D2 Series features retained from D Series predecessors include the one-piece sealed and pressurized cab (Cab One), electro-hydraulic controls, premium seat choices, lift arms, available electric work-tool coupler, and available Intelligent Leveling features, such as dual self-leveling, electronic

snubbing, return-to-dig, and work tool positioner.

The steel track option is best suited for customers that require improved traction due to working in challenging underfoot conditions that may contain high concentrations of protruding objects (such as boulders, stumps, demolition debris, etc.) and/or using heavy work tools, working on slopes and/or working near transitions.

Undercarriage suspension is standard on all D2 Series MTLs and CTLs and isolates

the undercarriage from the machine frame using torsion axles. The torsion axles allow independent up/down movement to distribute the load and absorb shocks and vibrations. This results in higher operating speeds, better material retention and increased operator comfort. Both the 299D2 and the 299D2 XHP can be equipped with an optional sealed and lubricated steel track system. The 15.7-inch triple grouser steel track delivers additional traction and/or track life in applications not ideally suited for a rubber track.

The 297D2 and 297D2 XHP Multi Terrain Loaders features the unique dual-suspension undercarriage. The Dual Level Suspension offers a “second level” of suspension, in addition to the torsion axle suspension, using oscillating roller wheel assemblies. These roller wheel assemblies will independently pivot when they encounter an obstruction providing more track on the ground, better load retention, improved operator comfort and one of the smoothest rides in the industry.

Cat® D2 Series Loaders Feature Standard Advanced Display, Enhanced Operating Capacities, Reduced Emissions & Sealed Engine Compartment

The new Cat® 272D2 Skid Steer Loader, 297D2 Multi Terrain Loader and 299D2 Compact Track Loader — along with their more powerful XHP counterparts — build on the engineering advances in performance, operator comfort, visibility, control, and machine security of their D Series predecessors. Now standard on all six D2 Series models is the exclusive Caterpillar heads-up Advanced Display and all feature a new engine-compartment sealing system for enhanced airflow debris control. All models have a vertical-lift loader linkage and use a Cat C3.8 engine meeting U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final/EU Stage IV emissions standards.

In addition to providing a theft deterrent system, the Advanced Display accommodates up to 50 operator security codes that allow each operator to adjust the machine to suit individual operating preferences. A full-color, 5-inch LCD monitor enables on-screen adjustment of implement response,

hydrostatic drive response, creep control speed, ride control activation speed, language preference and gauge layout selection. Electronic instrumentation includes fuel level, DEF level, hydraulic and engine coolant temperatures, and tachometer. An available rearview camera, standard on the XHP models, displays high-resolution images on the

Manage It Well. Make It Last

Detecting wear through daily inspections and preventive maintenance puts you in control of the life and performance of your investment. Foley Equipment is always available to answer questions and provide whatever help you need, such as S•O•SSM fluid analysis and periodic inspections.

FACTORS AFFECTING WEAR

ApplicationThe type of job and materials the machine

is working in can affect the rate of wear on different components. The following situations all assume level terrain:

- Dozing and push loading usually shift the machine weight toward the front, causing faster wear rates on the front rollers and idlers.

- Ripping and drawbar shift the weight toward the back, increasing wear on the rear rollers, idlers, and sprockets.

- Loading, as with a carry dozer, shifts the weight from the rear to the front of the machine as it changes from digging to carrying. Wear will occur more on the front and rear rollers than the center ones.

- Excavating shifts the weight to the side where the digging is being done. Spreading dumped material tends to create more wear on the undercarriage side where the operator hits the pile, due to the material entering the undercarriage from the side.

TerrainMost of the time you can’t control the terrain

you are working in. However, it is important to understand how contours and slopes affect undercarriage wear.

- Working uphill shifts the weight and load balance to the rear, causing higher wear on rear rollers and increasing forward drive side sprocket and bushing wear.

- Working downhill shifts weight and load balance forward, causing a relatively higher wear rate on front track rollers and idlers.

- Working on a side hill shifts the weight and load balance to the downhill side of the machine. This increases the wear rate on the components and parts on the sides that are on the upper side of the hill.

- Working on a crown shifts the load to the inboard components, increasing wear on inner links, inner roller, idler treads, and grouser ends.

- Working in a depression shifts the load to the outboard components, increasing wear on outer links, outer roller, idler treads, and grouser ends.

WEAR REDUCING TECHNIQUES

PackingDuring operation, materials can stick to

and pack between mating components such as rollers, links, sprocket teeth, and bushings. Packing prevents parts from engaging correctly. This can cause higher loads and increased wear rates. Packing is inevitable in many applications; however, there are things you can do to reduce the effects of packing.

- Use center punched shoes in certain situations to help relieve extrudable materials such as wet sand, clay, or snow.

- Clean out your undercarriage as often

as possible. Garbage, twigs, stones, and demolition debris cannot be extruded through the center punched shoes.

- Use roller guards only when necessary because they may trap debris and increase the effects of packing. They are designed primarily for use in high-impact underfoot conditions.

Always use the narrowest shoe possibleUse narrow shoes, which still provide

adequate flotation for your application. Proper flotation helps reduce wear by keeping track from being submerged in material, but using wider shoes than required by your application can lead to:

- Increased bushing and sprocket wear: Turning resistance, loads, and weight increase with wider shoes, especially in rough underfoot conditions. This added stress causes faster wear rates for bushings

and sprockets.- Increased link, track roller, idler tread, and

flange wear: Using shoes that are too wide increases the interference between these surfaces, causing them to wear faster.

- Loosening of pins, bushings, and shoe hardware: Leverage forces increase with wider shoes. In high impact or especially rough terrain, greater leverage forces may lead to premature loosening of bolted and pressed-fit components.

- Reduction of track joint life: Bending forces are exaggerated when using wide shoes in high impact applications, causing pressed track joints to “open up.” This may lead to loss of lubricant, internal wear, and replacement or reconditioning of track joints sooner than expected.

- Shoe breakage: Severe turning resistance in extreme conditions and bending forces may cause wide shoes to break.

C.J. Jones likes to tell people he retired two years ago but he’s a man on the move. Jones, president of Custom Dredge Works in Topeka, Kansas, is rapidly building the “go to” company for custom, portable dredges.

Old School Finds Market DemandDredging is an age-old technology that

can be used to move just about any material that can be suspended in water and pumped. Dredges are commonly used in mining sand and gravel. There are environmental uses too, including the removal of mining tailings from waste ponds and dredging navigable waterways to keep shipping channels and ports accessible.

Custom Dredge Works, (CDW), has its roots as Midwestern Metals, a custom industrial metal fabricating company founded in 1982. In 2000, Midwest began fabricating repair parts for dredges which quickly took off. In 2002, Custom Dredge Works was formed and the

company began building complete dredges. Business has flip-flopped since the early days. Today, fully 80% of their business is custom dredge building.

To say CDW builds complete dredges

doesn’t adequately describe just how much of the fabrication is done under one roof. “We start with a stack of plate steel, angle iron and channel and turn it into a dredge. Fully 99% of the design and fabrication work is done in house,” Jones explained. “We even truck the product to the customer.”

The Caterpillar ConnectionMost dredges include two engines: one to

power the pump and an auxiliary power unit to provide electricity and power hydraulics. The engine of choice? Caterpillar. “Depending on the size of the dredge, we’re using C9s, (350 hp), all the way up to C32s (1,350 hp), for the larger dredges,” Jones said.

“We chose Cat because of the worldwide service,” Jones continued. “You can always count on their dealer network for parts and service.” Worldwide availability of parts and service is increasingly important to CDW as they have not only shipped dredges across the U.S., but also to Mexico, South America and recently to Nigeria.

The Foley PartnershipEd Beatty, Industrial OEM Accounts Manager

for Foley, began working with CDW in 2014,

offering engine specifications and related technical information for the application. “What we’ve found with Ed and Foley is someone to become part of our team to keep us informed of what’s changing, what’s available, the better solution,” Jones said. “We’re working on an option to power our dredges with 100% natural gas powered engine. Caterpillar, Foley and Ed have been very helpful in exploring the ins-and-outs of this solution. We’re very excited about the prospects for it.”

Custom Dredge WorksDredging up big business.

CDW builds two type of dredges: chain ladder and cutter head. A chain ladder is very similar to a chain saw in which a rotating chain with cutters stirs up the material which is then pumped to the surface as a slurry. The cutter head dredge stirs up the material similarly but uses a conical-shaped bit as the agitator.

“On a day-to-day basis, I’m nothing but a problem solver,” said C.J. Jones. Jones is frequently on the shop floor consulting with employees along with Jessica Smith, Inside Sales.

Together, C.J. Jones (right) and son John run Custom Dredge Works and its staff of around 50 employees.

Workers tack weld structural components of a pontoon. 99% of the dredges are built on site. Pontoons are pressure tested after assembly.

A Cat C-18 in the receiving area of CDW.

A completed cutter head dredge awaits shipment to the customer.

in the 1950s expanded the service territory to 49 counties in central and Western Kansas. In 1973, the business was passed to Paul “Skip” Foley, Jr. Skip grew the company by adding additional service and warehouse space, as well as broadening the product line. In 1997, Ann Konecny, Skip’s daughter, became the president of the company her grandfather

started. In 1998, the company changed its name from Foley Tractor to Foley Equipment to reflect expanded offerings from Caterpillar. With the acquisition of Martin Tractor in 2009 and Dean Machinery in 2012, the company grew again and now covers 144 counties across Kansas and northwest Missouri.

Today, we are proud to still be third generation family-owned and operated. We remain hands-on in our approach to working with customers to find the right solutions to get the job done right.

PARTS & SERVICESWhen we provide a piece of equipment

it comes with our commitment to ensure it keeps running and running right. Foley is unmatched in our investment in the people, facilities, logistics and Foley Maintenance Plans to support our customers. Foley’s commitment also includes dedicated specialty shops for engines, undercarriage and radiators and specialized tooling and testing equipment.

EQUIPMENT MANAGEMENT SOLUTIONSOur Equipment Management Solutions

group works with customers to optimize machine utilization, monitor machine location, productivity, health and fuel burn to help lower operating costs, and maximize customers’ return on investment.
