FOLIA ENTOMOLOGICA HUNGARICA ROVARTANI KÖZLEMÉNYEK XUX 1988 p. 123-151 The Scientific Results of Hungarian Soil Zoological Expeditions in New Guinea. Coleoptera, Tenebrionidae: Lagruni By O. MERKL (Received November 1, 1987) Abstract: A total of 37 species collected by Hungarian zoologists in Papua New Guinea is listed. Three new genera (Acutogria, Kaindilagria. Tomogria) and 21 new species (Acutogria falcata, Bothrichara iners, B. intricata, B. iri- descens, B. wau, Casnonidea apicalis, C. baloghi, C. caudata, C. demetrida, C. dobodura. C. flavipes, C. hystrix, C. loksai, C. pallens, C. punctithorax, C. setosa. Kaindilagria forcipata, Lagria amethystina, L. ligulata, L. sapphi- rina. Tomogria perlata) are described. With 49 figures. Hungarian zoologists have visited New Guinea several times. First, S. FENICHEL made fieldwork there, but it ended by his tragic death (1893-95), with an emphasis on birds; he collected also many insects but no lagriine specimens. Following FENICHEL's interrupt- ed work, L. BIRÓ made extensive and meticulous collectings (1895- 1901) in German New Guinea ("Kaiser Wilhelmsland") of that time. In his most valuable material, some speci- mens of Lagriini were also found - these have been written up by PIC (1956). Between 1965 and 1980, Dr. J. BALOGH performed six expeditions to Papua New Gui-j nea (formerly Territory of Papua and New Guinea). Dr. I. LOKSA and Dr. L. MÓCZÁR joint- ed him in one case each. The late Dr. J. J.H. SZENT-IVANY (Adelaide, South Australia) hac) an important share in the organization of these trips and the collecting of material. The Wau Ecology Institute (formerly Rishop Museum Field Station) was mostly the centre and starting place of these expeditions. The present contribution submits the results concerning the tenebrionid tribe Lagriini.| The material comprises 106 specimens belonging to 37 species; of them, 21 are described hereunder as new and 3 of them represent new genera. The two Oreogria species have recent- ly been described in a generic revision (MERKL 1988), while two further species remain un-, identified or undescribed for certain reasons (see List of species). Since important materials of various collectings were available to me during the de- scriptions, the specimens of collectings other than those of J. BALOGH were also taken into! account. These are indicated by four-letter abbreviations in the text; the name of repository; is followed by the name of curator or private collector in the subsequent list: ANIC Australian National Insect Collection, CSIRO, Canberra, ACT, Australia. Dr. J. F. LAWRENCE. ( BMNH British Museum (Natural History), London, United Kingdom. Dr. R.J.W. ALDRIDGE. BPBM Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum, Honolulu, Hawai'i, U.S.A. Dr. G.A. A b s t r a c t : A to ta l of 37 species col lected by Hungarian zoologists in Papua New Guinea is l i s t ed . Three new genera (Acu togr i a , K a i n d i l a g r i a . T o m o g r i a ) and 21 new species (Acutogr ia falcata, B o t h r i c h a r a i n e r s , B . i n t r i c a t a , B . i r i - descens, B . wau, Casnonidea ap ica l i s , C. ba loghi , C. caudata, C. demet r ida , C. dobodura. C. f lavipes , C. h y s t r i x , C. l o k s a i , C. pallens, C. punct i thorax, C. setosa. K a i n d i l a g r i a fo rc ipa ta , L a g r i a amethyst ina , L . l i gu la t a , L . sapphi- r i n a . T o m o g r i a per la ta) are descr ibed . W i t h 49 f igures .

Hungarian zoologists have v i s i t e d New Guinea seve ra l t imes . F i r s t , S. F E N I C H E L made f i e ldwork there , but i t ended by his t r ag ic death (1893-95), w i th an emphasis on b i r d s ; he col lec ted also many insects but no l ag r i ine specimens. Fo l l owing F E N I C H E L ' s i n t e r r u p t ed w o r k , L . BIRÓ made extensive and meticulous co l lec t ings (1895- 1901) i n German New Guinea ("Kaiser Wi lhe lms land" ) of that t i m e . In his most valuable m a t e r i a l , some specimens of L a g r i i n i were also found - these have been w r i t t e n up by PIC (1956).

Between 1965 and 1980, D r . J . B A L O G H pe r fo rmed s ix expedit ions to Papua New Gui-j nea ( f o r m e r l y T e r r i t o r y of Papua and New Guinea). D r . I . LOKSA and D r . L . MÓCZÁR jointed h i m in one case each. The late D r . J . J . H . S Z E N T - I V A N Y (Adelaide, South A u s t r a l i a ) hac) an impor t an t share in the organiza t ion of these t r i p s and the co l lec t ing of m a t e r i a l . The Wau Ecology Ins t i tu te ( f o r m e r l y Rishop Museum F i e l d Station) was most ly the centre and s t a r t i n g place of these expedi t ions .

The present con t r ibu t ion submits the resul t s concerning the t enebr ion id t r ibe L a g r i i n i . | The m a t e r i a l compr i ses 106 specimens belonging to 37 species; of them, 21 are descr ibed hereunder as new and 3 of them represent new genera. The two O r e o g r i a species have recently been descr ibed in a generic r e v i s i o n ( M E R K L 1988), whi le two fur ther species r e m a i n un-, iden t i f i ed or undescr ibed for cer ta in reasons (see L i s t of species).

Since impor t an t ma te r i a l s of va r ious col lec t ings were available to me dur ing the des c r i p t i o n s , the specimens of col lec t ings other than those of J . In the case of species, at which the Hungar ian m a t e r i a l consis ts of females or s l igh t ly ; damaged males only , I endeavoured to designate holotypes f r o m the m a t e r i a l of the Be rn i ce I Pauahi Bishop Museum, as fa r as i t was possible .

In the desc r ip t ion of species , the abbrev ia t ion E I is applied to the r a t io of eye d iameter and in t e rocu la r distance in d o r s a l v iew. These measurements and the r e l a t ive lengths of antennái segments are values measured d i r e c t l y by the ocular m i c r o m e t e r .

The labe l data of holotypes are fu l ly c i ted . The text of one l abe l is in quotation marks and the di f ferent labels are separated by semico lon . Holotype labels are r ed wi th the fo l lowing text: Holotypus , sex m a r k , generic and species name, M e r k l , 1988.

Data of paratypes are g iven i n the sequence of l o c a l i t y , a l t i tude ( i f poss ib l e ) , t i m e of co l l ec t ing , co l l ec t ing method ( i f possible) , name of co l l ec to r ( s ) . The number of specimens according to sexes and the abbrev ia t ion of r epos i t o ry are in parentheses. The paratype specimens are grouped in accordance of provinces of Papua New Guinea. Specimens co l lec ted in the western par t of New Guinea mainland, ( I r i an Jaya) are neglected in this paper and never designated as paratypes. Paratype labels are y e l l o w , w i t h the text as i n the holotype labels (of course, w i t h Paratypus instead of Holotypus) .

To save space, the fo l lowing fu r ther abbreviat ions and condensations seemed to be reasonable. On the one hand, an ove rwhe lming par t of the specimens was col lec ted by the S E D L A C E K ' s - the le t te rs JS, MS and JHS mean J . . M . and J . H . S E D L A C E K . On the other hand, by far the most specimens or ig ina te f r o m Wau (Morobe Prov ince ) and i t i s fel t superfluous to r ec i t e a l l - often qui te nearby - al t i tudes and days of co l l e c t i ng . T h e r e f o r e , the Wau specimens of the respect ive species are s u m m a r i z e d , wi th an i nd i ca t ion of lowest and h ighest a l t i tudines , the f i r s t and last dates of co l lec t ing and a l i s t of c o l l e c t o r s .
