Folkcraft FSH Series Appalachian Dulcimer

First, a little background info...

What we're doing now...

You can't tune a fish, but you can tune an FSH...We know the importance of playability and being in tune. That's why we have spent so much time perfecting the intonation on our fingerboards. You'll hear the precision from the first to the last fret. They look beautiful and play beautifully, and you will get that from every Appalachian dulcimer made by Folkcraft Instruments.

Body Shape

Evolution Of A Scroll Head

Napkin adoration...While settling down for dinner in Anaheim after another long day at the NAMM Show, we find a Folkcraft reference on our beverage napkin. Could subliminal advertisements for Folkcraft Instruments be Scattered throughout the world? Hmmm...

Folkcraft CSH Series Appalachian Dulcimer

First, a little background info...

What we're doing now...

Courting, party of 2, please...Sit face-to-face with your fellow dulcimer player and jam some tunes on a Folkcraft courting dulcimer! Or, use it as a "chaperone" and give it to a young dating couple (making sure you hear both fingerboards being strummed).

Tone Wood

Folkcraft Custom Series Appalachian Dulcimer

The professional's choice...

So many dulcimers, so little time...

These go to "11"...Need a little more volume? Once again, Folkcraft is more than happy to help out. With the addition of a Prefix Pro preamp and pickup from Fishman (the leading name in acoustic amplification) you can adjust your volume and tone a little or a lot so you'll never be drowned out again! Whether jamming with a small group or with a full band, your dulcimer will be crystal clear. Go ahead and plug in. We don't mind (in fact, we encourage it).

Accent Wood

Accent woods are used for the fingerboard, heel cap and center inlay strip along the instrument's back. They are also laid over or into our flat peghead designs.

When We Say "Custom," We Mean Custom

? ?

Headstock market...Peg heads for Folkcraft Appalachian dulcimers will have three different design options. Pictured here (starting from the top) are the scroll, traditional flat and contemporary flat head designs. Scroll heads can accommodate either open gear or planetary tuners. Flat heads are made to fit our closed gear tuners.

Dulcimer back2Named after the county in Virginia, the galax back is essentially two backs in one. One of the backs is raised, and does not come in contact with the dulcimer player's legs. This creates more vibrating area for the instrument, enhancing the acoustics and increasing both volume and resonance.

FolkRoots D Series Appalachian Dulcimer

The FolkRoots history...

Where we come from...Pictured here is a little piece of folk history. Look through the heart tone hole and you'll see the printed label, reading "Capritaurus. Handcrafts, fine and applied arts." Then next to that, handwritten in ink, "#13". Built in June of 1969, this is the 13th instrument to carry the Capritaurus name. Plywood body, hand carved scroll head, friction tuning pegs, 3 strings, no half frets... and the strap button doubles as the strings' lone anchor pin. We've come a long way!

What we're doing now...

Dog day dulcimer...Folkcraft owner Richard Ash is proud to call a FolkRoots custom his main Appalachian dulcimer. Whether promoting the instruments at a trade show or festival, demonstrating dulcimer music for seniors at the local church, or simply relaxing with Kira and Murray (pictured), a FolkRoots custom is his instrument of choice.

Appalachian Dulcimer Accessories

Pickin' green...Introducing the world's first compostable dulcimer pick! These FolkRoots brand 3-point picks are made entirely of wheat. You can wear your pick down playing "Greensleeves" and then throw it into your garden (it'll biodegrade into plant fertilizer in about 90 days). Who says you can't strum your dulcimer and be environmentally friendly at the same time?

Acoustic amplification...Fishman's Loudbox line of amplifiers delivers the tonal quality that has made the Fishman name the standard for great acoustic sound. Pair one with a Folkcraft dulcimer with a Fishman preamp and pickup, and you've got a match made in musical heaven.

The Great Debate: Pick Your Side

Appalachian Dulcimer Sheet Music

We're photogenic...The First Jam series has simple, common songs for the dulcimer. And a Folkcraft teardrop is smiling pretty on the cover! A "must have" for any music library!

DAD is A-OK...Play With An Ensemble In Your Own Home! As the front cover aptly states: "It doesn't get any easier!" This instruction book starts off with the basics and gets you playing your dulcimer right away. Each lesson is explained and demonstrated on the CD included with the book. It's like having your own private teacher at your side, helping you master the mountain dulcimer.

Appalachian Dulcimer Kits

Yes, they work...The best cardboard dulcimers we've ever heard! Folkcraft cardboard kits come standard with a hickory fingerboard and classic "F" tone holes. Glue is all you need to put the cardboard parts together. The "No Tools Required" kit will already have the frets, machine heads and anchor pins installed. They're great for the beginner, and perfect for student programs.

What we're doing now...

The best of the best...The 2011 NAMM Show promotional video featured giants of the music industry including Bono of U2, Bob Taylor of Taylor Guitars, Slash of Guns 'N Roses, and Richard Ash of Folkcraft Instruments. Folkcraft displays its instruments annually at the music industry based NAMM Show.

The joy of stringing...When it comes to stringing a hammered dulcimer, Folkcraft offers two options: coils of wire or loop end strings. Having the loop end already made adds ease and convenience to installing hammered dulcimer strings. Either set will have enough of each gauge string to bring life back into your hammered dulcimer.

First Lessons...Step-by-step instruction that will help you tune, play and master your hammered dulcimer. Each step is explained and demonstrated on an accompaniment CD.

Folkcraft Kantele

First, a little background info...

What we're doing now...

What's inside...If you were to take the top off a kantele, this is what you'd see. The back, sides, pin blocks and bracing are cut from a single piece of wood! Our unibody design enables the kantele to resonate freely, with a natural, clear bell-like tone quality.

Folkcraft Bowed Psaltery

First, a little background info...

What we're doing now...

Play A Bowed Psaltery... Today!

Psaltery package...

Psaltery versatility...The strings on a baritone or bass psalery are wound with phosphor bronze, and produce a unique droning sound when a bow is drawn over them. When plucked or strummed, these thicker strings give a deeper, warmer sound not necessarily characteristic of traditional psalteries. Definitely a unique addition to any folk music repertoire.

Bowed Psaltery Accessories

It's easy to play...Psaltery artists lead you from beginning through advanced playing techniques, and show you how to care for and maintain your instrument on this helpful DVD.

Multiple bows...This DVD gives a step by step guide to tuning, scales, slides, simple 1, 2 or 3 bowed tunes, and improvisation. To get the most out of this DVD, 2 bows are recommended.

Music Accessories And Gifts

Music in a box...Our deluxe music boxes are handmade with the same woods used for our instruments! We offer a variety of tunes, from Beethoven to The Star-Spangled Banner. The perfect gift for any occasion!

Druid Moon Ukuleles

What we're doing...

The next chapter...Pictured here is the first prototype Druid Moon ukulele, a veritable cornucopia of wood. One side of the body is black walnut, and the other is koa. The back is butternut, with western red cedar for the soundboard. African mahogany is used for the neck, headstock and bridge. And finishing off the fretboard is walnut. We started our ukulele journey with this prototype, and got a handle on how certain woods worked. Plenty of design changes followed, but this soprano ukulele symbolizes the spirit of Folkcraft, and our dream of providing the world with the best instruments possible.

A Renaissance tradition...Folk music and Appalachian dulcimers are always a favorite at Renaissance faires and festivals. Seen above in proper attire are Neal Hellman and Michael Rugg, exhibiting and demonstrating FolkRoots dulcimers at a 1981 faire in California. Below (in full costume), Nick Young and Richard Ash pause from demonstrating Folkcraft and FolkRoots dulcimers at the 2010 Renaissance Faire in Fishers, Indiana.
