We are well into the championship season, with only the senior meets
remaining. Overall, we have had a good season despite the practice time
challenges. Again, a big thank you to everyone for your patience!
We will begin scheduling practices at MHAC, effective April 1. The dome is
off, which will allow us the opportunity to train through the spring without
re-scheduling practices to take the dome down.
We have re-evaluated the lesson program at Reynolds and will be making
some changes this Spring to improve our entry level programs. We haven’t
been getting the expected number of young swimmers entering the
competitive program from our instructional program. We are making changes
with the program structure and emphasis, and will be able to utilize
scheduling opportunities at Reynolds to introduce some new activities.
Many thanks to our parent board, which remains enthusiastic, diligent and
proactive. You get an A+ in my book!
See you on deck!

MHA MEET
OFFICIALS
SWIM-A-THON
MHA welcomes Coach Sandi Healy to the team! She
will be on deck mid-March and will be coaching the
Reynolds group.
Sandi began competitive swimming at the age of 5
and grew up swimming in Oregon. She spent time on
the David Douglas Swim Team, and later moved to
MAC to swim with Coach Skip. After high school, she
spent summers working for Portland Parks teaching
lessons and lifeguarding. She eventually moved into
coaching at both the age group and the high school
level as an assistant and head coach.
She coached her way through college at PSU and in
1993 received a Bachelor's in Exercise Physiology with
a minor in Athletic Training. Sandi has been in the
fitness industry ever since, as a personal trainer,
coach, and triathlon coach. In 2016 she added the
certification of Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, from
The Nutritional Therapy Association. She currently
has her own personal training and nutrition business,
NW Body By Nature. She specializes in functional
movement with an emphasis on restoring ideal
muscular tension to allow for proper joint movement
and durability. Her clients have ranged from athletes
to grandmothers! She and her husband also coach
swimming for The Portland Tri Club.
Five years ago she and her husband adopted three
sisters and life was forever changed. Last year she was
able to return to her roots and with much excitement
to excel, rejoined Masters swimming with Mt. Hood
and Dennis.
With a strong background in technique and
training principles, she is ready to jump back into
the coaching arena with Mt. Hood.
It’s time……… for the 2019 MHA Swim-A-Thon!
The kick-off party date, and other important
information will be announced soon. Start making
your list of family, friends and businesses you want to
contact to sponsor you and the team.
The exciting benefits: Swim-A-Thon is more than an
excellent fundraiser. It is an opportunity to boost team
spirit and increase community awareness of the team.
By having the swimmers reach out into the
community, we are also raising awareness of the
importance of swimming as a life-saving skill and
conveying the lifelong benefits of our sport.
Swim-A-Thon is also the MOST important fundraiser
that we hold each year and the best way to meet your
team fundraising commitment. This fundraiser helps to
support our outstanding coaching staff and the use of
the top notch facilities in which we swim.

SWIM-A-THON
The 11-14 OSI Championships is always
an exciting meet, and this year was no
exception. Our team qualified 11
individual swimmers and 14 relays. We
finished 17th in combined team points
out of 46 teams, which doesn’t tell the
story of our entire weekend. Kaitlyn
Logue came away as our top scorer, and
set 5 new team records: 11-12 girls 100
free (57.19), 200 free (2:04.35), 500 free
(5:34.09), 1650 free (19:18), and the 50
fly (29.12). Sophie Roemmich (100
breast, 1:10.60) and Devan Oliphant (50
free, 23.30) set the second all-time
fastest MHA swims in the 13-14 girls and
boys category. All 11 of our individual
qualifiers cracked at least one of their
events on the top 10 team board for their
corresponding age group, which is
something we have never done before in
one meet.
It was great to see the kids step up and
swim fast on relays. Our 11-12 girls
finished 7th in the 200 freestyle relay,
which was a big move up from our seed
time. The 13-14 girls also stood out,
finishing 6th in the 200 free relay, 7th in
the 400 free relay, and 7th in the 800
free relay.
Several coaches from other teams
approached our coaching staff to
acknowledge how fast our team
swam. It’s always a good sign when
other coaches start asking about our
program, and recognizing our kids.
GOGGLES - TIPS TO
MAKE THEM LAST!
Goggles fog up when
war, wet air condenses
on the lenses. If your
goggles are made with
an anti-fog coating, they
will remain clearer for
longer period of time, if
you take care of them.
Read the instructions for
your particular pair of
goggles as to the type of
coating and care
required. Keep touching
of the lenses to a
minimum.
Wash goggles after your
swim – Spend a minute
cleaning the lenses after
swimming. Gently wash
them in lukewarm water
to remove chlorine or
other chemicals that may
shorten their lifespan.
Don’t use detergent or
soap.
Store them carefully –
Keep your goggles in a
protective pouch, to avoid
scratches. Also, if you
store them in a wet in a
bag, they can grow mold
or bacteria. Keep your
goggles out of the sun
when not wearing them.
Over time UV light can
damage the lenses.
Sophie Roemmich, Kaitlyn Logue and
Devan Oliphant all qualified new events
for Age Group Sectional and will be
joined by Madison Logue when they go
to compete in Federal Way at the end of
March. The kids will be representing our
team against the fastest swimmers from
Oregon, Washington, Hawaii, Alaska,
Idaho, and several other states. Our 13-
14 Girls also qualified the 200 freestyle
relay which will consist of Elle Moir,
Sophie Roemmich, Lauren Kenoyer, and
Sidney LeFranc.
I want to acknowledge all of those below
for their commitment and great swims
participating in the meet!

SENIOR 3
SENIOR 1
Gold squad's swimmer of the month is Ellie Schmidt. Ellie is will be moving up to the Sr1 group after this season. She has shown in practice she is ready for more challenging sets and has become more of a silent leader in our group. Ellie has made the commitment to work hard at each practice and is consistently dropping time in all of her events at meets.
She had a couple of amazing swims at the Coast Range qualifier, dropping 25 seconds in her 200 free and 15 seconds in her 500 free.
We are very proud of you Ellie, keep up the great work!
GOLD
Trenten is our most improved
Not only did he
qualify for state in the most
challenging and longest events swam
at the meet (500, 1000 & 1650
freestyle), but he finished top 8 in
both of the long events at state. He
did this after swimming meets for
three weekends in a row where he
qualified for the 4A High School State
Championships and finished 7th in
the 500 freestyle. A key factor to his
success this season has been his can
do attitude. He comes to practice
every day and challenges himself to
race his friends with a great attitude.
Keep it up Trenten

Swimmer of the month for the senior
team is Katie Simon. Katie capped of
her High School career with two big
wins at the District Championships,
winning the 100 breast and 200 IM.
Her 200 IM victory was a lifetime best
by 5 seconds! Katie has been running
our lesson program at Barlow as well
as coaching the Barlow Race Club.
Katie will compete at short-course
state this weekend!
In the 1948 Olympics, the US won every event in the
swimming competition.
For Swim-A-Thon 5% of the money raised goes to USA
Swimming to help support national initiatives while 95%
stays with Mt. Hood Aquatics.

at the start of the
season and also
hadn't swam a

distance event.
Olivia WeatherFord is 8 years old
and she is on MHA Red Squad.
Olivia works very hard and makes a
lot of practices. She listens really
well and is a leader. She competes
and meets and is not afraid to
swim hard events.
Oliva will be a future standout for
MHA!!
Great job Olivia!!
Healthy Snacks for Athletes on the Go
Youth athletes are busier than
ever. As the parent of a young
athlete, so are you. You might
find it difficult to always have
prepared healthy snacks for your
athletes, but nutritious foods to
fuel their busy lifestyle are crucial
to performance and adolescent
growth.
When planning healthy snacks for
your young athlete, some things
to keep in mind are:
Keep it simple. Be sure the
snacks are quality food with
limited artificial ingredients
and other pollution.
40/40/20. As a general rule,
think 40% protein, 40%
carbs and 20% fat. This
protein/carb/fat ratio will
keep your athlete full and
energized.
The following ideas are great
healthy snacks for athletes on the
go.
Protein Shake with
Banana & Peanut Butter
Protein Shake and PB&J
Sandwich
Protein Bar
Hummus with Veggies &
Pretzels
Greek Yogurt & Fruit
Trail Mix
Apple & Peanut Butter
with Protein Shake
Packing healthy snacks for
athletes on the go doesn’t have
to be difficult or time consuming.
Find a few options that your
athlete loves and be sure to
always have them on hand for
those particularly busy days.

BARLOW The Swimmer of the Month for
Barlow is Lydia Wilson. I continue to
be impressed in how Lydia has
improved. She is very quiet and in
many cases reserved, but when it is
time to race, she has a competitive
spirit like no other. She continues to
challenge herself during each and
every practice and this shows, as she
continues to decrease her times in
almost every meet. During every
practice Lydia rises to the challenges
of each set and practices as if she is
racing. Lydia currently swims on the
Red level, but will soon be moving up
to the Gold level over at Mt. Hood.

attends a lot of practices, as well
as competing at meets. She

Volunteer Opportunity
A question we have been asked…. “If I time at an away meet does it count
towards my MHA service hours requirement?” It does not. We host many
meets and need everyone to assist to make those successful.
When we are at an away meet, part of our responsibility as a participating team is
to provide timers. Usually, teams are assigned a lane to cover for timing during
the sessions. We request the same of other teams when we host meets. Visiting
teams are assigned a lane to cover for timing. We always want to make sure our
lane is covered.
Sometimes it can be a challenge to get invited and accepted to a swim meet. We
increase our odds, when we provide officials, cover our timing duties and are good
participants!
