Science News

It is getting to that time of the year when Science is even more dynamic in the run up to the festive season. Our students have been busy developing their problem solving skills by undertaking several projects. Here is a round up of our week in Science. GSK Malaria Competition Final Preparations Lewis Low and Richard Paterson in Year 7 have been busy preparing for the malaria competition final to be held at the Science museum on Tuesday 29 November. The boys, under the supervision of Year 12 mentor and Deputy Headboy Lewis Thorton, have improved upon their initial project entry by focusing on the use of plants in feeding and mortality inhibition of mosquitos. Their GSK mentors Namrata Taak,Director, R&D and Pipeline External Communications and Gary Davies- Director, Investor Relations visited last week and had this to say about the project: “We are very impressed with Lewis and Richard’s proposal! It’s clear that they have put in a lot of effort and thought into it. Gary and I really enjoyed helping with their presentation and we look forward to seeing the finished project.” We wish Lewis and Richard all the best at the finals next week!

Cell cycle cake competition in A Level Biology

This week Year 12 biologists were tasked by Mrs Sangar to model cell cycle using cake. The task challenged the students to fully grasp the importance of modelling in science and the limitations of scientific modelling in replicating cellular processes. Well done to all for great cake models but in particular to Lewis Thornton for a fantastic representation of anaphase stage of the cell cycle.

Year 8 Eye Dissection

Miss Banda's Year 8 students have been looking at types of lenses and to complete the topic, they carried out an eye dissection in order to identify and extract the lens, retina, optic nerve and iris. Well done Year 8 for great practical skills, with Alana Vaseri and Tahlia MacDonald getting the prize for best teamwork.

Year 9 Hydraulic and Robotic Arm Competition and Year 8 Artbot Challenge

Year 9 are preparing for SATS exams by undertaking one of the more challenging topics on the course

and designing hydraulic arms to investigate factors that affect hydraulics in machines. Well done Year

9 for showing resilience when undertaking this project and we look forward to seeing your end

products!

As part of the electricity module, Year 8 students were challenged to build a working Artbot- a robotic artist that makes patterns on paper. The teams were being scored on Teamwork, scientific detail, originality of idea and willingness to take on challenge (and innovation). Well done Year 8 with particular mention to Suzanna’s team for best Team work and originality, Tyler’s team for most innovative Artbot and Frederick’s team for scientific detail.

Supporting Learning

Thank you for the positive responses we have had with our introduction of Firefly to boost learning. We are still in the process of rolling this out across the school, but we are pleased that it is helping parents support students with their learning. Please remember that students are still also using exercise books with DIT sheets for clear next steps to learning. The planner is also a useful tool should you wish to communicate with your child’s form tutor, as this gets signed regularly and messages can be passed on if necessary. We are looking forward to launching the parent portal aspect of Firefly early in the New Year – we will keep you informed about when this will happen. Ms Rebecca Poole Senior Deputy Headteacher

Year 8 and 9 Rewards Weekend

Wishing all our students and staff an adventure filled weekend and we look forward to hearing all about it next week. The Rotary Club of Teddinton and the Hamptons is organising the Santa’s Sleigh around the local streets and this year, it will take place Wednesday 14 December. The Rotary Club obtains the necessary permissions, arranges for Santa to attend and provides the sleigh, music, towing vehicle and driver, whilst Helpers are tasked with scampering around with collecting buckets, knocking on doors and encouraging householders to be generous. If Teddington School participates, the Rotary Club gives us 80% of the monies collected, retaining the rest for other Rotary charities. Previous years have raised between £180 and £460. It would be a lovely way for our students to get involved in the local community, whilst helping to raise funds for both Teddinton School and the charities supported by the Rotary Club. Please contact [email protected] if you would be willing to help.

Sporting News

The Year 7 Rugby Team faced a strong Christ’s School team on Tuesday 22 November, losing 5 v 45. The team showed great integrity and endeavour to keep playing to the very end. The team now look forward to the Middlesex U12 Tournament on Friday 2 December at 10.00am at Staines Rugby Club. The team qualified for the tournament back in September with a 65-0 win over Uxbridge High School. They will be looking to bounce back at this weeks result and put in a good performance. The tournament will have Cup, Plate, Shield and Bowl tiers with the boys having at least 6 matches through the day. There will be further details on the school and PE department twitter and website. Please come down and support the boys through the day.

Mr Ross Fowles PE Teacher

It will be a lovely opportunity to come and do a little bit of Christmas shopping, from our local business as well as buying some bespoke craft items from some of our students. Stalls cost £10 each and Students or Charity Stalls are £5 each. For further information or to book a stall, please contact Laura Newbould on 07811 292579 or [email protected]

PTA Request for Help With the Teddington School Christmas Tree sale approaching, we are looking for families who would be willing to have an estate agent board to advertise the tree sale. Road Safety Week

Teddington School is taking part in the UK’s biggest road safety event, Road Safety Week (21-27 November), coordinated by Brake, the road safety charity. This year, thousands of organisations, schools and community groups are backing the Make the Brake Pledge campaign, helping to spread awareness about six simple things to save lives and the planet. The Road Safety Week 2016 theme, Make the Brake Pledge, is about people all over the country understanding six key things they can do to protect themselves and the people around them, and reduce emissions and pollution from vehicles. The six Brake Pledge points are: Slow, Sober, Secure, Silent, Sharp and Sustainable. Every day, five people are killed and more than 60 people are seriously injured on UK roads [1][2]. There are an estimated further 29,000 deaths from particulate matter pollution in the UK [3], 5,000 of which are attributable to road transport [4], and an additional 23,500 deaths from NO2 [5]. Brake is asking everyone to help end this needless suffering by spreading the word in Road Safety Week about the life-saving importance of the Pledge. To mark the start of Road Safety Week, Brake will be releasing the results of research revealing what people perceive to be the biggest threats on Britain’s roads, and what dangerous habits they admit to having themselves. Dave Nichols, community engagement manager for Brake, said: “We’re delighted Teddington School is getting involved with Road Safety Week and strengthening Brake’s campaign for safer roads. We’ve designed this year’s theme to be action-orientated. Everyone – individuals, businesses, schools and community organisations – can make and share the Brake Pledge. Brake is working for safe, sustainable, healthy and fair transport. Brake supports a vision zero approach, which places the emphasis on systems to save lives and the planet, such as 20mph limits in towns and segregated routes for people on foot and bicycles. We know it is challenging to change road users’ behaviour and humans make mistakes and some knowingly take risks. However, the deaths and injuries are happening right now, this week, and everyone can do their bit today by spreading awareness of the vital importance of the Pledge rules: slow down; never drink or take drugs or use a mobile when driving; always wear a seat belt; get eyesight tested; and minimise driving.”
