The Africology range of prod-ucts

The Next 48hOURS • What’s Hot

By RoxyKEmail: [email protected]

Summer is practically on our doorstop and this is the time to pamper your body with nourishing body butters, re-

freshing shower gels and exfoliating body scrubs. We also need to get in shape to wear a swimsuit and that means a lot of work to be included into your beauty regimen. As the weather warms and the humidity rockets, you would need products that are packed with nutrients that tone and firm the skin, giving you optimal results.

I searched for products that are natural and gentle on the skin and the Africology range is considered the leading natural, eco-friendly and holistic skincare option. To prep the body, the range has a body scrub

which is a blend of walnut and marula shell powder that provides a gentle, chemical-free exfoliator. The tiny micro beads are infused with geranium, neroli, sweet orange and lemon essential oils. This gently ex-foliates and removes dead skin while nourishing and replenishing moisture and oils back onto the skin, leaving it smooth and moisturized. The vi-tamins and minerals such as linoleic acid, vitamin A, calcium, potassium, iron and phosphate are penetrated into the skin and this contributes to the general well being of the cell membranes. This body scrub buffs away dry skin and impurities and preps the skin for moisturizing and polishing. The body gel contains yuc-ca to increase cell growth and soothe irritation. Extracts of gentle soapwort cleanses without stripping the skin of its natural oils. Aloe ferox soothes and moisturizers the skin, leaving it soft and supple.

It is recommended for all skin

types. The easy pump action bottle ensures that there is no wastage and just the exact amount is needed to give the body an overall cleanse and hydrated feel.

The body butter is rich in cocoa butter and shea, which work to sof-ten and protect, while the canola oils heal and repair barriers while sooth-ing inflammation. This thick, quick absorbing cream promotes cell re-generation and blood circulation, which in turn rejuvenates dry and aging skin. I would recommend that you ditch your ordinary body lotions for this super rich body butter, which leaves your skin feeling moist and silky. The smell of the body wash is also uplifting and invigorating, aid-ing in feeling relaxed and calm.

If you really want to prep your body for the summer, then you should try the Africology slimming detox cream. This thick formula con-tains a botanical blend of seaweed, ivy, horsetail (Equisetum), queen-

meadow and biting clematis, which are all chosen for their effective slim-ming and firming action. The cream is also enriched with guarana extract, cysteic acid and pantetheine sul-fonate, which trigger cell processes that stimulate the mitochondria to burn excess fat. This detoxing cream is most effective after body brushing or exfoliation.

Since all africology products are fragranced with pure essential oils it is safe to use every day. which should make every bath time feel special. Your body will feel polished, moistur-ized, smooth and toned after use.

WIn!To stand a chance to win some of these fabulous skin hydrating products, send your name and “africology” in the subject line in an e-mail to [email protected] before 10am on Monday, Septem-ber 21. Good luck!

The Next 48hOURS • What’s Hot

Restaurant review by Bianco Coleman

The seasons, they are a-changing and along with them, Hemelhuijs has once again reinvented itself.

Since it opened in 2010, creative and culinary genius Jacques Erasmus has transformed the space and the menu…not so much that you walk in and think “what the heck?”, but in subtle ways that retain the sophisti-cation, style and elegance to which we have become accustomed, as well as the divine food, which puts a contemporary twist on traditional favourites like ouma used to make.Whether winter, spring, summer, or autumn, the emphasis is on comfort and familiarity, but without any old fashioned stodginess or dowdiness. Breakfast is served all day – old fash-ioned sago, or “melkkos” or a mos-bolletjie, as well as the more modern poached eggs with artichoke hearts and hollandaise sauce among the of-ferings.

This is not the first page of the menu; that belongs to a list of de-lectable cocktails like ginger brandy with rosemary, lemonade and fresh lemon, or quince and saffron ratafia with soda and freshly pressed apple juices. You can have virgin juices too. Naturally there is a superb wine list, and hot drinks include hazelnut dark

hot chocolate ganache with steamed milk or vanilla dulce du leche with thyme steamed milk.

The next page offers “Humble Beginnings”. From this I chose the slow-cooked onion soup, topped with brioche and baked with Klein-rivier Gruyere. A generous portion, it could easily be a light meal on its own. Another soup option is cream of roasted cauliflower and chestnut with hints of truffle. They say “hints” but we could pick up that distinctive aroma from several tables away.

My friend started with a salad

from the “Life Is Beautiful” sec-tion – roasted cauliflower with soft poached egg, avocado, croutons, and a lemon-anchoïade dressing, which is made with anchovies, garlic, and ol-ive oil. Fabulous presentation, fabu-lous flavours.

For main courses we turned the page to “Warm the Heart”… pan-fried lamb kidneys with mushrooms, mustard and Marmite toast soldiers, an open burger of slow roasted beef brisket with prune and peppercorn cream… The first thing I saw was farm style beef and cabbage fri-kadelle served with truffled bean and potato mash, which was the perfect dish for a typical Cape Town winter’s day. My friend had one of the restau-rant’s specialities: white pepper fried calamari dressed with radish, green apple and miso mayonnaise.

We didn’t actually have space for dessert, which can be ordered from the divine selection of pastries and cakes, but I did ask for a sliver of pear and white chocolate tart, because it was, quite simply, irresistible.

This season’s décor at Hemelhuijs has walls painted a river clay ter-racotta shade accented with muted delft tones of blues and whites. Mounds of quinces, when available, are artfully displayed because at Hemelhuijs seasonal produce is visu-ally celebrated as well as deliciously offered on a plate. Against one burnt

orange wall stands the multitude of gold-labeled brown laboratory bot-tles filled with flavour compounds developed by Jacques and known as Flavour Intense. These were intro-duced last year and have proved so popular as small gifts or self-indul-gent purchases that they are now an integral part of the Hemelhuijs col-lection.

Taking his cue from the Victo-rian botanists who first collected and preserved a diverse selection of flora for later identification and study, Jacques has introduced The Botanicals, a visual celebration of our own flora. The ever-changing collection of leaves and flowers are lovingly collected and meticulously prepared, pressed on acid free paper

or pure linen. Each piece is a natural masterpiece - a perfect capturing of a very specific (and fleeting) moment of beauty.

Besides the lovely environment in which you will enjoy a fabulous meal, the staff are well trained, and Jacques himself is a gracious host. Highly recommended.

Hemelhuijs: Delectable twists on traditional favourites

mother city fine dining

Rock legends Iron Maiden, whose new studio double album ‘The Book Of Souls’ debuted at No 4 in South Africa, will make a much anticipated return in May, 2016, to the country on their enormous Boeing 747-400 jumbo jet Ed Force One, piloted by vocalist Bruce Dickinson and carrying band, crew and stage production and equipment.

Maiden will play two shows: May 18 in Cape Town at the Grand Arena, fol-lowed by May 21 at the Johannesburg Carnival City Festival Lawns.

“We cannot wait to get back out on tour. Maiden thrive on touring and getting out to our fans - it’s what we do best - so it will be a great feeling

to board our new Jumbo Ed Force One with the crew and the gear and head round the globe and get back on stage for you guys,” says Dickinson.

“I’m especially delighted to be com-ing to South Africa, as although the band has played here before, it’ll be the first time that Adrian Smith and my-self will be touring here as part of Iron Maiden, so we’re really looking forward to seeing all our fans,” adds the singer.

The band hasn’t decided on the set list for the tour yet, but Dickinson says that fans can look forward to lots of cuts from the new album, which the band is very excited about, but also plenty of the older favourites. “I think

the fans will be delighted by what we have in mind. We are in the middle of creating the new show and rest assured we are working hard to bring you all something spectacular; something with a lot of heart. You certainly deserve it for your patience,” adds Dickinson.

The support band on The Book Of Souls World Tour will be The Raven Age.

* Tickets go on-sale on Thursday, Sep-tember 17, at 9am from bigconcerts.co.za; or Computicket. There will be an exclusive pre-sale for Iron Maiden Fan Club members, details of which can be found on www.ironmaiden.com. Ticket prices range from R510 to R905.

‘Orpheus in Africa’ returns by popular demand

After a sold out “try out” season of David Kramer’s ‘Orpheus in Africa’ that played to capacity houses

in February earlier this year, the hit musical will return to the Fugard on Tuesday, September 22, and will run until October 31. To celebrate the Fugard Theatre is offering all tickets for the first week (only) at R130 per ticket.

Audiences were enthralled by this little known and unusual story about Orpheus McAdoo and the Vir-ginia Jubilee Singers who came to South Africa from the USA in 1890. Their tour began in Scotland where Orpheus met Lady Loch - the wife of the British Governor of the Cape - who invited them to Cape Town. It was here some 125 years ago that the Jubilee Singers became an un-likely overnight sensation.

Kramer’s young company recre-ate the unique vocal style of that period, singing some of the well known jubilee spirituals, such as ‘Swing Low Sweet Chariot’ and ‘The Gospel Train’ as well as new songs composed by Kramer.

The creative team includes set designer Saul Radomsky, costume

designer Birrie le Roux, choir master Alistair Izobell, music director and arranger Charl-Johan Lingenfelder and lighting designers Daniel Gal-loway and Benjamin du Plessis.

“It’s always exciting for us to pre-sent musical theatre,” says Galloway, who is also the Executive Director of

the Fugard Theatre. “But to be able to nurture and produce a new South African work is the most rewarding challenge of all. Unlike other shows that have been tried and tested on stages overseas, an original work like ‘Orpheus in Africa’ had no pre-dictable outcome. So we were espe-

cially thrilled at the overwhelming critical and box office response to its first ‘try-out, work-in-progress’ season in February. For those who weren’t able to get a ticket we of-fer an opportunity to see a work that David Kramer has ‘fine-tuned’ for the return season.” Virtually the

whole original company returns to reprise their characters: Aubrey Poo (‘Muvhango’, ‘Scandal’, ‘The Wild’, ‘Rent’, ‘Dreamgirls’) will again lead the production, as Orpheus McA-doo, alongside Lynelle Kenned (‘West Side Story’, ‘Blood Brothers’, ‘Showboat’), who also returns to the production, as Orpheus’s fiancé, Mattie Allen.

Also returning are: Jill Levenberg (‘Blood Brothers’, ‘Nancy’), Jes-sica Sole (‘Beauty and the Beast’, ‘Annie’), Dean Balie (‘Kat and the Kings’, ‘Blood Brothers’), Sne Dladla (‘The Joke’s On You’), Sanda Shan-du (‘Presenter Search on 3’), Bianca Flanders (‘Blood Brothers’, ‘Dig’) and Edith Plaatjies (‘Slick Swing’, ‘Blood Brothers’).

Carlo Daniels (‘Kat and the Kings’, ‘Blood Brothers’), Robin Pi-eters (‘Vocal Mania’, ‘Kaapse Musiek in Colour 2’), and Jarrad Ricketts (‘Boy Band Mania’, ‘The Standards’) have joined the company for this run.

* Tickets are available through the Fugard Theatre box office on 021 461 4554; or via Computicket.com.

A scene from ‘Orpheus In Africa’

Dalin Oliver

Dalin Oliver ditched the chalk board and assemblies for a microphone and the stage. The ex-high school mathematics and history teacher can be seen in ‘I Came, I Taught, I Left’ from Monday to Saturday, September 21 to 26. Directed by Stuart Taylor, this is a comedy about following the path less travelled and discovering that the real learning starts when school ends.

140 characters with Oliver

Describe yourself in the Twitter format.Tall, dark & handsome. Why did you double check my photo? Mild-ly balding. Awkwardly good look-ing. I struggle to give straightfor-ward answers.

What can audiences look forward to with ‘I Came, I Taught, I Left’?“Prepare yourself for some home truths about South African culture, schools & teachers” - Review from CUE. Clean cut family comedy. Pull in.

At which point of your life did it become apparent to you that you could crack people up?When my neighbour caught me playing “tok tokkie” (knocking on his door). I said it wasn’t me, it’s the guy behind you. He Looked. I ran.

Your biggest inspiration in life...My parents. They are legends. They’re probably reading this. Brownie points for my next home cooked meal and clean washing.

The most nervous you’ve ever been on stage...Nerves kick in before I’m on stage. So every gig. I’m a nervous wreck. Can’t hold proper conversations.

Question why I put myself through this.

“Last night a show changed my life.” Which show?Watching my first live club comedy show, before I started, at Obz Cafe in 2010; a Sunday evening. I wrote maths finals the next day. No re-grets.

If you could be anyone else for 24 hours...Hashim Amla. I’m an avid cricketer. Did you know: each strand of his beard represents a bowler’s career he’s ruined. Legend.

Drinks are on us. What are you having? My mother told me not to talk to strangers. We haven’t met so I re-spectfully decline. Ok fine. Banana and peanut butter milkshake.

Easiest way to your heart...Buy a ticket to my show. That’s such a blatant punt. Seriously though, you need to come to my

show.

Favourite place in the world...The section in the Woolworths fridge where they store the caramel swiss role desserts.

Book(s) and/or movie(s) you can read/watch over and over again...So many. For now, let’s go with the following...Movies: ‘Step Brothers’; ‘Madagas-car’Books: ‘Michael McIntyre – Life and Laughing: My Story’; ‘The last Lecture’

You’ve been reincarnated as a pizza...which toppings should we expect? Why on earth would I be reincar-nated as a pizza? I would just get eaten and then die again. What do I return as? Bacon Avo and Fetta.

Ex-teacher is out to make you laugh The stage comes alive with ‘The Sound of Laughter’Alan Committie is (still) alive with ‘The Sound Of Laughter’, which did so well over December that he has been per-suaded to return for some Springtime performances. Catch the funny man at Theatre On The Bay until October 3 for 17 performances only of raucous laughter.

As a 40-year-old comedian with slightly greying hair, Committie is try-ing to be a little more serious about his comedy. Which essentially means new material, but the same suit.

The comedian will be covering (amongst a lot of other things):• Selfies to Mordor-onic Elfies• Banting whilst bunting• The weighty issues of gym and health• The final say on the Pistorius trial• Economy class bread rolls• A powerful, if ineffective examina-

tion of ‘War Horse’ and why it cannot solve the Middle East Crisis

There’s also an aerial silk act, while the dangers of unitards will be explored in full, not to mention a special appear-ance by Committie’s alter ego Johan van der Walt on behalf of Eskom.

It promises to be an evening you don’t want to miss. Unless you do, in which case, you can come to another night.

If you book now, Committie will throw in an interval somewhere in the middle of the show for free. Except for the drinks. And snacks.

* Performances will take place from Tuesdays to Fridays at 8pm; and Sat-urdays at 5pm and 8.15pm, with only one performance scheduled for Satur-day, September 19 at 8.15pm.Book at the Theatre on 021 438 3300.

After a nationwide search George Baloyi (52) from Soshanguve, Gauteng, was voted the winner of the pres-

tigious 2015 Championship Boerewors competition.

His boerewors recipe will now be used for Championship Boerewors sold in all Shoprite, Checkers and Checkers Hyper stores where the equivalent of 8220km boerewors – the distance be-tween Cape Town and Mumbai (India) – was sold during the group’s previous financial year (ended June 30, 2015).

Baloyi’s name was revealed in the sky over Cape Town shortly after 12pm on Tuesday, September 15, as well known South African personalities Marc Lot-tering, Corné Krige and Tol Ass Mo sky dived to promote #SAsNo1 Champion-ship Boerewors.

In the process they raised R100000 for charity and to show his support for this worthy cause, rugby legend Naas Botha even came out of early Twitter retirement.

This was Baloyi’s fifth entry into the

competition, but the first time he made it into the final. Baloyi started mak-ing boerewors 25 years ago when he worked at a butchery in Pretoria. Years of practice finally paid off yesterday when he received the grand prize of a new Hilux 2.7 Double Cab Raised Body L45 following an extensive voting pro-cess by the South African public.

Baloyi’s recipe will be on sale in all Shoprite and Checkers stores nation-wide from Friday, September 18 – just in time to celebrate Heritage Day or be enjoyed whilst watching the Rugby World Cup.

The other two Championship Boere-wors finalists were Phinah Maimela (37) from Lydenburg, Mpumalanga, and Ayanda Dyanse (28), from Humansdorp, Eastern Cape. All three finalists received gift hampers from sponsors Coca Cola, All Gold and Simba, as well as vouchers from Shoprite and Checkers stores.

Shoprite and Checkers celebrates SA’s boerewors tradition every year by hosting the Championship Boerewors competition.

Gong Li in ‘Coming Home’

FILM: MAXCAST: JOSH WIGGINS, LAUREN GRAHAM, THOMAS HADEN CHURCH, ROBBIE AMELL, LUKE KLEINTANK, DEJON LAqUAKE, MIA XIT-LALI, CARLOSDIRECTOR: BOAZ YAKIN

A precision-trained military dog, Max serves on the frontlines in Afghanistan alongside his han-dler, U.S. Marine Kyle Wincott.

But when things go terribly wrong on manoeuvres, Kyle is mortally wounded and Max, traumatized by the loss of his best friend, is unable to remain in service.

Sent stateside, the only human he seems willing to connect with is Kyle’s teenage brother, Justin (Josh Wiggins), so Max is saved when he is adopted by Kyle’s family. But Justin has issues of his own, including living up to his father’s expec-tations, and he isn’t interested in taking responsibility for his brother’s troubled dog. However, Max may be Justin’s only chance to discover what really happened to his brother that day on the front, and with the help of Carmen, a tough-talking young teen who has a way with dogs, Justin begins to appreciate his canine companion.

Justin’s growing trust in Max helps the four-legged veteran revert back to his he-roic self, and as the pair race to unravel the mystery, they find more excitement - and danger - than they bargained for. But they each might also find an unlikely new best friend…in each other.

“When people connect with an animal there’s a primal bond that often goes be-yond what we experience with other peo-

ple,” says Boaz Yakin, the co-writer/direc-tor/executive producer of ‘Max’. That was the initial inspiration for the movie, which follows the journey of a military working dog (MWD) whose U.S. Marine handler loses his life in Afghanistan. Traumatized, the dog is adopted by the family the Ma-rine left behind.

Yakin, a self-proclaimed dog-lover at-tests, “I wanted to tell a story that was emotional and heightened, while still keeping it rooted in reality.” He turned to long-time friend Sheldon Lettich, who co-wrote the screenplay.

“Sheldon is a Marine Corps Vietnam Veteran and brought in the idea of using MWD’s. These dogs risk their lives, or have

their lives put at risk, going far ahead of their units in order to literally smell out danger,” he adds.

That instinct was reinforced when Yak-in and Lettich watched one of the many viral videos of MWDs lying mournfully beside their handler’s casket at their fu-nerals, loyal to the end and beyond. Such videos have touched a deep chord in mil-lions of viewers around the world.

Lettich shares, “When we saw the vid-eo of the MWD grieving over his partner, we knew that was the core of our canine hero.”

The decision to make Max a Belgian Malinois, instead of a more familiar breed such as a German Shepherd, was informed

by the fact that the Malinois has become the breed of choice to serve as MWDs for military forces and law enforcement agencies across the United States and throughout the world. Leaner than a Ger-man Shepherd, the highly focused dogs, when trained, can smell drugs and bombs and find bodies. They can be deadly and are trusted to guard the White House and the President of the United States.

Before writing, Yakin and Lettich ob-served the dogs in action at the Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base K9 Unit in California. Driven to hunt and capture prey, the Malinois has a 270-degree field of vision and the force of its bite equals 1400 pounds per square inch. It can run 30 miles per hour and withstand the heat of the desert.

But what happens when a MWD is unable to work anymore due to injuries, stress or trauma, which can cause Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)? Thanks to Robby’s Law, which went into effect in 2000, MWDs are no longer simply eu-thanized. They can be adopted by their handlers or other former handlers.

They also found that some MWDs have also been adopted by the civilian families of dog handlers who had been killed in either Iraq or Afghanistan. That interested Lettich, who has also owned several Bel-gian Malinois, and knows from personal experience that the breed is highly en-ergetic, intelligent, and extremely task-oriented. “It’s like a human coming back, it’s an adjustment. We wanted to follow a fictional dog home stateside after his handler’s death and see where that took the dog - and the family,” he explains.

FILM: EVERESTCAST: JAKE GYLLENHAAL, EMILY WAT-SON, JASON CLARKE, JOHN HAWKES, JOSH BROLIN, KEIRA KNIGHTLEY, ROBIN WRIGHT AND SAM WORTHING-TONDIRECTOR: BALTASAR KORMAKUR

Based on the real events of the 1996 Mount Everest disaster, this thriller focuses on two different expeditions that go on a mission to climb the world’s highest moun-tain. Due to the amount of people attempting the climb at once and the lack of fixed ropes placed at strategic points in advance, the climbers find themselves in a bot-tleneck as they try to summit, de-laying their journey, and causing disastrous consequences.

The summit of Mount Everest, the mightiest mountain on Earth, is more than five miles above sea level, close to the cruising altitude of a 747 jumbo jet. Its fearsome

and unforgiving peak has hosted thousands of daring climbers who have felt compelled to rise to the greatest challenge in mountain-eering. The tragic events in May 1996 represented, at that time, the deadliest climb in Everest’s history. The world’s media were transfixed by this story of human endurance, which became the subject of best-selling books and documentaries, often with contradicting accounts of the events.

Working Title producer Tim Bevan first became interested in the story when he read Jon Krakau-er’s ‘Into Thin Air’ soon after it was published in 1997. Krakauer, a journalist who had been part of Rob Hall’s Adventure Consultants team on the mountain that May, had first documented the events for an article in Outside maga-zine. Bevan’s producing partner, Eric Fellner, shared his enthusiasm for the project; they discovered

that Universal Pictures, with which Working Title has a long-term dis-tribution agreement, coincidental-ly owned other properties relating to the events.

These included Beck Weath-ers’ ‘Left for Dead: My Journey Home from Everest’, from which the film draws inspiration, as well as the transcript of the final satel-lite phone conversation between Rob Hall and his wife, Jan Arnold. While the families of the climb-ers involved had remained mostly quiet about the tragic events over the years, they maintained an on-going dialogue with the filmmak-ers, working toward an appropriate time for a feature-film reimagin-ing of the events to be made.

Considering the lofty goals that director Baltasar Kormakur and his producers set for those who would be cast in ‘Everest’, they knew there was no better way to achieve them than to take the actors on that journey themselves.

The director explains what was important to him in looking for the ideal talent: “I needed the cast to face the elements and deal with their fears. To pull all this off it meant that there was no easy way out. To shoot in the foothills of Everest in high altitude we had to trek up there ourselves.”

The challenges included shoot-ing -30 C in the Val Senales, 12 to14 hours a day for six weeks, as well as creating a giant freezer on stage so real snow could be blown on the actors. “These are only few of the things we did to give it our all. But if you felt sorry for your-self, all you had to do was to re-member the real people and what they went through in reality,” adds Kormakur. He reflects, “Ultimately, all this struggle wouldn’t be worth much if the story of Rob Hall and Jan, Beck, Doug, Scott Fischer, Anatoli and all the others was not handled in a truthful manner.”

The Next 48hOURS 9www.48hours.co.za18 September - 24 September 2015

The Artscape Theatre Centre is coming alive with stories in September, in celebration of Heritage month.

“We are stories that we tell our-selves.” So says Nigerian poet Ben Okri. While Heritage Month means different things to different people, Artscape will be celebrating herit-age by telling stories and considering how narratives are reflected orally, written and in creative forms.

Through various disciplines, Artscape are setting forth to ques-tion identity, with a focus on “who we are, what we are and what we have been”, encouraging young and old alike to reclaim and restore the important stories of our heritage, to challenge misappropriations and find healing.

One of the undisputed highlights of the festival (which started in late August) is the musical showcase ‘Zoid. Zolani.’. Fans of more contem-porary sounds will be thrilled to hear that Freshlyground’s Zolani Mahola and rock queen, Karen Zoid will be bringing their hit show to Artscape on Wednesday and Thursday, Sep-tember 23 and 24, as part of the festival.

Back by popular demand, ‘Izity-hilelo Zobuze’ by Lingua Franca will explore the concept of circumstan-tial inheritance through poetry and music from Thursday to Saturday, September 17 to 26, while ‘Words of War’ by Anele Rusi will tell stories of our heritage and history through

inspiring poetry and songs of cel-ebration, on Thursday and Saturday, September 24 and 26.

Much of South Africa’s heritage is tied up in the stories of our neigh-bouring countries, a point proven by ‘Born Around Here’, a production by Botswana’s Company@Maitisong. The piece tells the often unknown story of Botswana and other neigh-bouring countries’ contribution to the struggle for freedom in South Africa through the eyes of Botswana family.

Away from the stage, Artscape will host a dialogue titled ‘Con-necting Creatives’ on Heritage Day while Artscape’s Tunnel (mural area between Artscape and Civic Centre Parking) will become the backdrop for ‘Ngokomzekeliso Wakhe (In His Image)’ – a performance art instilla-tion by a multi award winner Chuma Sopotela, on Thursday and Saturday, September 24 and 26.

Bantu Biko said: “History works through people, and we have availed ourselves for history to work through us.” With their Heritage Festival, Artscape hopes to inspire theatre-goers to unearth their hidden stories and embrace their diverse identities.

Directed by Mbongeni Nomkonwana and Lwanda Sindaphi, ‘Izityhilelo Zobuze’ is an exploration of the con-cept of circumstantial inheritance committed to a personal and inti-mate poetic memory and interroga-tion. A journey with Lingua Franca spoken word movement, the produc-

tion is a narrative that fuses the com-plexities of opposing realities and the inevitability of newness that is and is yet to be.

‘born around Here’WHERE: Artscape ArenaWHEN: Thursday, September 24, at 10amTICKETS: Invited Guests Only

Many South Africans are unaware of how other countries helped South Africa and its liberation movements during the Apartheid struggle. This production, created by Botswana-based Company@Maitisong high-lights the contributions of Zambia and Botswana in the struggle for freedom, through the eyes of Zake, a South African refugee who marries a Botswana citizen and undertakes underground operations between Gaborone and Lusaka. The presence of political refugees posed grave dangers to nationals who were often harassed or killed for “harbouring terrorists”. Their stories are told while the play interrogates human vulnerabilities and fears, while shining a light on love, com-passion and the spirit of Ubuntu.

‘Words of War’WHERE: Artscape ArenaWHEN: Thursday, September 24 (2pm) and Saturday, September 26 (1pm)TICKETS: R80 (R50 for students, pen-sioners, scholars and block bookings)

‘Words of War’ is a collection of inspiring poems and songs of cel-ebration woven together with instru-mental music. The production is a collaboration of thoughts and visions by Anele Rusi, Anele Kose, Nomakres-tu, Masixole Mali and Aviwe Kalolo who call themselves “servants of the art and soldiers of the heart.”With live sound by DJ Andre, ‘Words of War’ tells the story of a child haunted by voices and visions from “the other side”. It is a celebration of our scars and history.

‘Raising Superheroes’, the follow-up title to ‘The Real Meal Revolution’, is a “real food” cookbook that pro-vides parents with the right dietary and nutritional advice and recipes to raise the healthiest, brightest kids possible.

‘The Real Meal Revolution’ was all about taking on the global obe-sity epidemic with a revolutionary approach to eating; it challenged ingrained beliefs, it sold (and still sells) in record-breaking numbers throughout South Africa, and it

changed people’s lives. With ‘Rais-ing Superheroes’ the authors have now set out to revolutionise the way we feed our children. It’s time, they believe, to challenge the kids’ food industry and our old assumptions; it’s time to give our children the best nutrition possible, and the best start in life.

‘Raising Superheroes’ is not a Banting cookbook, and it doesn’t of-fer no-carb eating for kids. But – in advocating low-sugar, low-refined-carb, “real” food eating – it is the ‘Real Meal Revolution’s’ next step in its attempts to change the world.

Professor Tim Noakes is currently the most high-profile scientist in South Africa, and the figurehead of the original ‘Real Meal Revolution’. Jonno Proudfoot is the driving force behind the brand. Bridget Surtees is a registered dietitian specialising in paediatric nutrition, with 20 years worth of experience in major South African, London and Sydney hospi-tals.

Let’s cook!

Chocolate quinoa with yoghurt and buttery pears

Ingredients:• 1 cup quinoa• 1 cup water• 200 ml coconut milk• 2 pears, peeled and grated• 1 tsp orange zest• 2 tbls cocoa• 1 pear core and thinly sliced

• 2 tbls butter• Yoghurt to serve• Method:Rince the quinoa well under running water; if you don’t it will have a bit-ter taste. Drain in a sieve.Place the quinoa and water in a saucepan and simmer on low heat for 15 minutes.Watch that the water doesn’t cook entirely away, in which case the qui-noa can burn and stick. When quinoa start to open, add the coconut milk, grated pear, orange zest and cocoa and simmer for a fur-ther 5-10 minutes. You will know it’s ready when the quinoa grains are puffy and opened up.While the quinoa is cooking melt the butter in a pan and lightly fry the sliced pear until cooked through and slightly golden.

Serve the chocolate quinoa with a spoonful of yoghurt, scattered with the buttery pears and a sprinkle of cocoa.

Get up close and personal with Mother Nature for mahalaIn celebration of spring and in a bid to stoke Mzansi pride, South African Na-tional Parks (SANParks) kicked off its annual week-long campaign on Mon-day, Friday, September 14, that affords South African residents free access to nearly all of the 19 national parks. This offer will last until Saturday, September 19, so make sure to get out there and breathe in the fresh air.

In the Cape Region, Bontebok Na-tional Park, Garden Route National Park, Tankwa Karoo National Park, Ta-ble Mountain National Park (excluding Boulders Penguin Colony and the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway) and West Coast National Park are waiving their costs and ushering in visitors for less than even a pretty penny.

This year is extra special as it marks

the tenth SANParks Week – the initia-tive’s formal title – and as in the past, organisers will look to better acquaint locals with their culture and heritage, draw attention to conservation issues and cultivate more of a knowledge base about the country’s wild and wonderful natural spaces.

To qualify for this seasonal offer, it’s merely necessary to present an official, green barcoded or smart SA ID at the time of entry. Though, as the campaign particularly looks to drive adolescents to the parks, young persons under the age of 16 will be granted free access even without proof of identity.

* Visit www.sanparks.org for more in-formation on activities that are lined up for this period.
