and observanceof the Law of the Lord,

and to teaching its decrees and laws in Israel.

The development of leaders – a look at the ministry of Jesus



1. Come and follow me!

Matthew 4:18-2018As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his

brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 19 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of

men.” 20At once they left their nets and followed him.



2. Pray and care for others

Matthew 9:35-3835Jesus went through all the towns and villages,

teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease

and sickness. 36When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were

harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37Then he said to his disciples, “The

harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out

workers into his harvest field.”



3. Go and learn by doing

Matthew 10:1, 5-81He called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out evil spirits and to heal every

disease and sickness... 5These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Do not go among the

Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans. 6Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel. 7As you go, preach this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven is near.’ 8Heal

the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received,

freely give…”



4. You have been given incredible authority!

Matthew 16:13-1813When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man

is?”

14They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

15“But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I

am?”

16Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ,the Son of the living God.”



4. You have been given incredible authority!

Matthew 16:13-1817Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in

heaven. 18And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. 19I will give you the keys of the kingdom of

heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” 20Then he warned his disciples not to tell anyone

that he was the Christ.



5.Humility is Key for the leader of the church

Matthew 16:21-2321From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples

that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be

raised to life.

22Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to you!”

23Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind

the things of God, but the things of men.



6. There is no plan B… We are God’s plan!

Matthew 28:16-2016Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the

mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the

Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded

you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

1 Timothy 4:9-169This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance

10(and for this we labor and strive), that we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, and especially of those who believe. 11Command and teach

these things. 12Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the

believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity. 13Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of

Scripture, to preaching and to teaching. 14Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through a prophetic

message when the body of elders laid their hands on you.

them, so that everyone may see your progress. 16Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them,

because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.

2 Timothy 2:14-1514Keep reminding them of these things. Warn them before God against quarreling about words; it is of no value, and

only ruins those who listen. 15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the

word of truth.



2 Timothy 2:20-2620In a large house there are articles not only of gold and

silver, but also of wood and clay; some are for noble purposes and some for ignoble. 21If a man cleanses

himself from the latter, he will be an instrument for noble purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared

to do any good work.



2 Timothy 2:20-2622Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness,

faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. 23Don’t have anything to do with

foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels. 24And the Lord’s servant must not

quarrel; instead, he must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. 25Those who oppose him he must

gently instruct, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth,

26and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do

his will.

have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, 15and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you

wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching,

rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped

for every good work.
