FOLLOWING THE MONEY
Say something stupid and see what happens
PLUS John Diehl Collects Another $200,000 in 3-weeks for the race against No
One.
Chesterfield and Town and Country Election Newsletter
November 1, 2012
By John Hoffmann
Most reasonable people know when Todd Akin spoke the memorable words “legitimate
rape” on the August 18 Saturday afternoon Jaco Report interview show on KTVI, he
really meant to say “forcible rape.” Too many people latched on to the “legitimate rape”
aspect of his statement and ignored what followed…how a woman’s body shuts down
making conception difficult to occur.
To me it is what he said after “legitimate rape” that makes many people mutter, “This
guy is in congress?”
A few weeks ago I crunched the campaign contribution numbers supplied by the
Federal Election Commission. I looked at what money was rolling into the Claire
McCaskill and Akin campaigns before Akin became a national figure in late night TV
monologues and in editorial cartoons.
I get curious. I was wondering what the effect national publicity over Akin’s comments
had on fund raising. It took a week to go through about 45,000 contributions. My eyes
were getting blurry after 40-hours of staring at numbers on my computer screen as I
2
again decided to look at the big money and keep track of any contribution at a $1,000 or
more to either campaign.
This from the Huffington Post is typical of the national lambasting Akin has taken.
In the first seven months of the year Akin had gotten a noticeable number of
contributions from doctors, as he was clearly against Obamacare. He was also getting
a lot of money from the coal mining industry. Our research showed the money from both
the docs and the companies in the coal regions dried up after the Jaco Report.
However with the national publicity he had tapped into a new conservative source of
people who have not been familiar with him. In the first seven months of the year he got
$192,400 of big donations of $1,000 or more from out of state source. That is a period
of about 32 weeks. After the Jaco Report interview he collected $189,000 from out of
state contributions of $1,000 or more in just six weeks.
McCaskill had been getting money from typical Democratic areas such as show biz,
labor groups and east coast blue bloods. That continued in spades.
After the controversy Akin asked for any contributions including some as small as $5. It
was interesting to note that while Akin was successful in getting the small donations,
3
McCaskill was more successful. But what was astounding was all the large contributions
that McCaskill started getting.
Two factors were also in play. The Democrats wanting to hang onto to the majority in
the Senate were steering some contributions her way. Secondly after the interview
there was a reversal in the polls. Suddenly she went from trailing to leading.
Sportswriters may root for the underdog for the sake of their story, but people throwing
money at politicians prefer to invest in likely winners.
NEW YORK, NEW YORK IT’S A WONDERFUL TOWN! McCaskill collected more
large donations from just New York City six weeks after Akin’s Jaco interview
($221,950) than Todd collected in the State of Missouri ($216,859). He had no large
contributions from New York City and only three $1,000 donations from the State of
New York.
HOORAY FOR HOLLYWOOD AND THE SILICON VALLEY: Claire collected more
money in the six weeks after Jaco than Akin did in Missouri or nationally, when she got
$1,000 or more from 130 Californians totaling $217,933. Movie people from Disney
animators to major studio directors and producers were sending money to Claire in fly
over territory known as Missouri. Women geeks working at Google on the West Coast
and Facebook on the East Coast sent big money.
A third thing was hard to ignore. There are a number of women pissed at Akin and his
remarks. Suddenly the doctors who were not giving money to McCaskill in the first
seven months were now. Plus lots of women! Women from out west who were listing
their occupations as “rancher” or “farmer’
One group that stuck with McCaskill was lawyers. 25-percent of big dollar contributors
from Missouri over the first seven months were lawyers. That did not change. It was
again 25-percent of large Missouri contributions that were coming from attorneys in the
six weeks after the Jaco Report aired. One change was a noticeable increase in out of
state large donations that came from women law professors.
WEST COUNTY STILL FOR AKIN…BUT THAT WAS IT:
Chesterfield had 30 people hand over big checks to Akin from January to July
($59,200) compared to just 15 for McCaskill ($17,750). After Jaco nine people making
large contributions with Chesterfield addresses gave Todd $13,750. Claire narrowed the
difference getting $1,000 or more checks from seven Chesterfield people for $9,750.
4
LADUE: The first seven months of the year saw 14 people from Ladue give big checks
to Todd totaling $44,500. McCaskill had more large contributors from Ladue but less
money, taking in $31,400 from 18 people. After Jaco, Akin got $31,999 from 12 large
amount contributors. Claire only managed $22,500 from 11 people living in the 63124
zip code.
TOWN AND COUNTRY: In the first seven months of the year Akin got $27,100 from 14
people writing four figure checks. McCaskill beat him with $28,300 from 12 contributors
of big bucks. After Jaco Akin got $12,500 from seven people writing the word
“thousand” on their checks. McCaskill only got $8,150 from four generous contributors
over the six week period
THE REST OF ST. LOUIS : But Claire’s money pumps in the City of St. Louis and
Clayton were still working. From January to July she took in $125,351 from 57 large
money contributions in the City of St. Louis. Akin had four people with city address
cough up $5,000. The six weeks after Jaco Claire got $38,178 in big checks from St.
Louis. Todd gathered only two checks over $1000 for $5,000.
It was worse in U. City. $38,150 of large checks came McCaskill’s way from University
City from January to July. Akin got one for $1,500. In the six weeks after legitimate rape
hit the airwaves Claire $19,000 in large donations from 12 people in U. City. Todd got
one for $1,000.
CLAYTON wasn’t any better for Akin. McCaskill grabbed 65 big checks for $116,950
through July. Todd got three for $4,700. From the Jaco Report to the end of September
Claire got another $67,300 in large checks out of Clayton. Todd didn’t get any.
FRONTENAC went with McCaskill in our January through July survey $14,825 to
$3,400 for Todd, showing not all rich people are ultra conservative. After Jaco Akin
didn’t fare any better. He got one $1,000 check and McCaskill got five big checks for
$10,500.
TINY Village of Country Life Acres with just a few dozen houses and surrounded by
Town and Country on Clayton Road had two contributors after the Jaco report, one for
each candidate. Akin got $1,000 from a man and McCaskill got $3,000 from a woman.
KC If U. City went for Claire in a big way in the contribution race, in Kansas City it was
as if Akin did not exist. Lawyers led the way with $246,813 for the former Jackson
County prosecutor over the first seven months. They followed that up with $75,000 in
5
large donations from August 19 to September 30. Akin had $12,750 from 12 big KC
spenders for the first seven months of 2012 and five $1,000 donations after Jaco.
A FEW CATCHES Spending a week of eyeballing campaign finance records for eight
days a few things did catch my eye.
For instance Mr. Charles Drury, the president of Drury Inns, gave large contributions to
Akin. Joseph Pereles, a vice-president of Drury Inns gave a hefty check to McCaskill.
A. Alfred Taubman founder of Taubman properties, a company building a Chesterfield
Outlet Mall gave $2,000 to the McCaskill campaign on September 4.
Ward Lein, the CEO of Town and Country’s Energizer gave $2,500 to Claire.
Kevin O’Keefe one of the top dogs at the law firm that does Town and Country’s legal
work gave McCaskill $500 after the Jaco interview.
Chesterfield’s city attorney Bob Heggie gave McCaskill a $1,000 in 2011. He followed
that up with another $1,000 for Claire on August 1, 2012.
Kansas City area Republican Teresa Loar, a former KCMO city councilwoman gave
McCaskill $900 in 2011 and another $50 after the Jaco Report.
August Busch III made a large contribution to Akin, while other members of the family
sent money to Claire.
We found one person who gave Akin $1,000 in 2011 and McCaskill $2,500 after the
Jaco Report.
We could not included fashion designer Donna Karan’s $1,000 contribution to Claire,
because it came after the July finance report was closed and before the Jaco interview.
You would think that maybe Donna could send Claire some hipper threads if she wins.
Of course McCaskill wants to keep it a Midwest “conservative look” up to Election Day.
I have to admit that some of the people giving large checks to Claire had a slightly more
interesting sense of humor than those of Akin supporters. The FEC requires donors to
list employers and occupations. Here are a few examples.
Elizabeth Theiss of Ballwin gave a $1,000 and listed her occupation as “domestic
engineer.”
6
Kim Marie Graham of Liberty, Missouri sent McCaskill $1,000 and listed her occupation
as “domestic Goddess and attorney.”
Ellen Steis of Sterling Virginia wrote her occupation down with her $1,000 donation as
simply “woman.”
Farmer Barry Aylock of Parma, Missouri gave McCaskill $2,400 and listed his line of
work as an “agri-business entrepreneur.”
My favorite was the occupation given by Walter Wilke of Austin, Texas who gave Claire
$5,000. He listed his occupation as “self- employed leisurist.” I might have to steal that
one. Wilke later asked for half of his contribution back. Apparently he needed more
funding for his occupation.
Here are a few occupations that you saw on McCaskill contributions that you didn’t see
on ones for Akin: Actor, Artist, Musician, Director, Animation Director, Producer, Opera
Singer, manager of Ballet Company, New York City Theater Manager, Writer, Editor,
Literary Agent, Publisher, Actor Agent, employee of actor’s labor organization, Film
Curator, Horse Breeder, Architect, Law Professor, Assistant Prosecuting Attorney and
Songwriter.
In our last newsletter about this Senate race, I wrote how it was interesting to see that
Tom Lehr, the Harvard Math professor, who had several hit musical satire albums in the
1960’s and appear on David Frost’s parody TV Show, “That Was The Week That Was”
was alive and gave big money to the McCaskill campaign.
Going through these new campaign records, I found a $500 donation from a familiar
name from 1960’s music and television, Nancy Sinatra.
Another person who we all of likely heard sing, but might be unfamiliar with his name
was also on the McCaskill donor list. James Ottaway gave money to the Missouri
senator. He has performed as a vocalist on Fresh Air and Manheim Steamroller
Christmas albums.
The October Quarterly Reports from Akin and McCaskill that included the “After Jaco”
period up to September 30 showed that McCaskill collected $5,344,764 to Akin’s
$1,600,728.
7
For the 2011-2012 election cycle up to September 30 McCaskill had collected
$15,008,018 to Akin’s $3,825,304.
AMAZING! If you look at the campaign contributions you’d swear McCaskill would win
in a landslide. She had more money coming in from more people, from more towns and
cities in Missouri and more States than Akin. While Todd would get a $1,000 from a
PAC, Claire would get $150,000.
However the latest polls taken well after the Jaco Interview showed McCaskill’s lead on
Akin had dropped from 10 points to 2 points.
You have to wonder if too many Missourians who now favor Romney by eight points are
remembering photos like these connecting Senator McCaskill and President Obama.
The latest lists of big money contributors to both campaigns are listed at the end of this
newsletter. The Jan. 2012 to July 2012 list of big buck donors is on the website
http://johnhoffmann.net

LET’S MAKE A DIEHL. JOHN DIEHL CONTINUES HIS ELECTION CAMPAGIN
FIGHT AGAINST NO CANDIDATE…HE COLLECTS ANOTHER $200,050 in October
and spends most of it. Can State Rep. John Diehl ever get enough money?
State Representative John Diehl, who now serves parts of
Frontenac, Town and Country and Chesterfield has never had any
opposition in a primary or general election. That certainly hasn’t
stopped him in raising money. It is apparently very expensive to
run unopposed.
We have reported for over a year now how Diehl is collecting
money from sources outside of his district and in fact outside of
Missouri, with large contributions coming in from special interest groups from the East
Coast to the West Coast. It appears as if Diehl is most interest in John Diehl and not the
residents of his district.
Three weeks in October up to eight-days before the general election Diehl has collected
another $200,000 in three weeks and dispersed most of it.
His biggest contributor in the three week period was Rex Sinquefield of Westphalia,
Missouri who donated $75,000. Westphalia is just under a 2-hour drive on twisting and
winding roads from the edge of Diehl’s district.
SAY IT WITH A CARD We mentioned in a recent newsletter how at the same time
Hallmark Cards was shutting down a production facility and laying off workers, they
gave Diehl a $1,000.
The Hallmark money continued to flow this month. On October 3rd Hallmark of Kansas
City gave Diehl a $1,000. That was followed on October 4 by a $1,000 campaign
contribution from Donald Hall of Hallmark Cards and a $1,000 from Donald Hall, Jr. of
Hallmark Cards then came another $1,000 from Donald Hall, Jr. on October 5. The
sincerest way to say it may be with a Hallmark Card but for Diehl it is with cash from
Hallmark Cards.
Here are a few out of state contributions received by Diehl in October:
$1000 Pinnacle Entertainment Las Vegas, Nevada
$500 Swedish Match (Tobacco) Richmond, Virginia
$1000 BNSF Railway Co Ft. Worth, Texas
$1000 Union Pacific Railroad Omaha, Nebraska
9
$200 Edison Learning Inc Knoxville, Tennessee
$250 K12 Management Herndon, Virginia
$1000 NRA Political Vic Fund Fairfax, Virginia
$250 Southern Wine & Spirits Miramar, Florida
$500 Waste Management Houston, Texas
$1000 Advance America Spartanburg, South Carolina
$2500 Forrest Lucas (Lucas Oil) Corona, California
$2500 United Healthcare Minneapolis, Minnesota
$500 Tenet Dallas, Texas
$1000 Check into Cash Cleveland, Tennessee
$2000 QC Holdings Overland Park, Kansas
$4,000 Advantage Capital New Orleans, Louisiana
$2,000 National Processing Overland Park, Kansas
$1200 Astra Zeneca Wilmington, Delaware
$500 ARDA ROC PAC Washington, DC
$750 Aetna Hartford, Connecticut
SPECIAL ORDERS DON’T UPSET BURGER KING AND SPECIAL INTRESTS DON’T
UPSET DIEHL…Diehl continues to get money from the pork industry after selling
Missourians down the road by voting for special legislations that limits how Missourians
can sue large hog operations run by Smithfield Farms of Virginia for polluting
neighboring property in west central Missouri. Diehl has accepted thousands in
contributions from Smithfield and the Missouri Pork PAC, including from both in the last
quarter. The money and Christmas Hams started rolling Diehl’s way just before the vote
taking away landowner rights adjacent to huge hog farms. It continues as the Pork PAC
tossed in another $500 in October. Beside Railroads Diehl is also accepting large
donations from any and all Missouri utilities.
THE DEBT: Diehl normally makes a $25,000 payment to Chase Credit Cards each
quarter. Now in October he upped that. Perhaps he is trying to get out of debt…by
making a $30,000 payment on October 1 and a $30,000 payment on October 25. How
can you be hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt to a credit card company when you
never have an opponent?
Diehl paid campaign worker Charles Hinderliter of Maplewood $2,500 on October 22.
What does Hinderliter do? Is he going door-to-door in T&C and Chesterfield getting out
that Diehl vote? These were also $1,500 to campaign consultants. I guess that is a
bargain, after all he doesn’t have to worry about going negative.
10
As in other quarters Diehl has travel costs and all are outside of his district in West
County. He spent $285 at the 54th Street Grill in Independence, Missouri. He dropped
another $126 at J. Bucks downtown. There was also the airfare. Who knew his district in
West County was so big he needed to buy commercial airline tickets to cover it. Then
there were also the Kansas City and Springfield hotel rooms.
GENEROUS TO A FAULT: John also handed out over $100,000 to other candidates,
mostly in $500 payments with notable exceptions of $10,000 to Cole McNary, running
an uphill battle for treasurer, $3,000 for Kirkwood state rep, Rick Stream and $2,500 for
severely ethically challenged Ed Martin running for Attorney General.
THE EXPENSIVE BUT QUIET RACE: It is amazing that Diehl has collected close to a
$1,000,000 and always seems to have over $250,000 in the bank for this expensive
race against no one, but hasn’t even put a yard sign out at his house located on Clayton
Road.
