Friends of Music February Newsletter

Please take a minute to review the CHS Music Department's upcoming activities, performances, and fundraisers. It’s shaping up to be an exciting and busy spring!

Save These Dates!

Upcoming FOM meetings Listed below are planned dates for the FOM meetings to be held in the Student Services conference room at 7PM. Any changes will be announced by email and the monthly newsletter. The May meeting will include a vote on the slate of officers for next year.February 19March 12April 12May 14June 11

Florida Trip Information

Mandatory trip meeting- Tuesday, April 1, 7 pm

The trip is planned for April 2-6th. Remaining payment balances will be due by mid-February. More information to come when the final payment amount is determined!!

Chamber Choir Master Class:

The Madrigals will participate in the Chamber Choir Master class on Monday, February 10 at Wilde Lake High School. Chaperones will be needed. They will

perform three pieces for the other Chamber Choirs in the county and will have a clinic with Dr. Stephen Holmes, who is the Artistic Director of the Maryland Boys Choir.

Choir Adjudication:

The Howard County Choir Adjudication will be at Howard High School on Wednesday, March 12, 2014 with performances at 5:10, 6:40 and 7:40 pm. Centennial Madrigals, Women’s Choir and combined Concert Choir will perform three separate pieces and will perform two sight-reading examples. Their performances are open to the public.

Band adjudication:

The Howard County Band Adjudication will be at Glenelg High School.--The CHS Wind Ensemble will perform at 5:50 PM on Friday, March 14,

2014.--The CHS Symphonic Band will perform at 2:30 PM on Saturday March

15, 2014.

The Centennial High community is invited to root, root, root for our home team Friday, April 25, when the Baltimore Orioles take on the Kansas City Royals. Game time is 7:05pm. Lower reserve tickets will be on sale starting mid-February for $15.00 each. A portion of each ticket sold will benefit the CHS Friends of Music. Music Department Auditions for 2014-15

2014-2015 Choir auditions:

Interested in Madrigals or Women’s Choir for 2014- 2015? Sign up for an audition time on either February 5, 6 or 7. Audition sign-ups are listed on the choir door (703). Be prepared to sing a song demonstrating your voice (a solo song or a song sung in a choir class this year) and be prepared to sight-read a melodic and rhythmic example.

2014-15 Band auditions:• Increased enrollment may require an additional (3rd) band. Therefore all

band students are required to audition scheduled February 18-28, 2014 • Save the date: Marching band camp (required for all marching band

members) is scheduled for August 11 - 22, 2014. Marching Band requirements for a three band format will be determined, stay tuned!

• Audition Repertoire will include:o Chromatic Scaleo Major scales (all 12 keys)o Prepared piece i.e. band music, all-state audition material, solo or

etude o Sight-reading

In January, the Friends of Music (FOM) Nomination Committee (Nom-Com) was officially initiated. The FOM Nom-Com is comprised of representatives from Orchestra, Choir, and Band. Their purpose to prepare the 2014-2015 slate of FOM board positions, committee chairpersons, and a vast array of coordinators for events and tasks that support our music directors to keep our music programs running smoothly and effectively. This year we have many positions available. FOM Board Positions include: President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Recording Secretary. FOM Committee Chair positions include: Volunteers, Nominations, and Communications/Publicity. FOM Coordinator positions include: Orchestra Concert Coordinator, Madrigals Costumer, Giant Gift Cards, Business Sponsors, and the individual fund raiser events. FOM needs you, your time, and your talents to be successful! Please consider taking that extra step to support the CHS Music Programs and volunteer for a FOM Position.
