Update of the End Hunger Campaign Power to End Hunger

Highlights 2011–2012

Last year Foodbank SA launched an End Hunger campaign aimed at ‘all people at all times having access to safe, affordable and nutritious food’.

Data collected from Foodbank SA agency customers by Deloitte Access Economics highlighted the growing needs of individuals and families for assistance with food requirements.

Their report showed:

Demand for food relief is rising. An increase in the number of individuals seeking food assistance is being experienced in almost 60% of agencies and across all welfare groups. 4 in 10 agencies reported constant demand while more than 1 in 5 agencies reported a 15% increase in demand over 2011.

It’s not who you think. Agencies are now providing food relief services to more low income households than unemployed households, while the percentage providing assistance to single parent families is also high. Some households with an income are still seeking help with their basic food requirements.

Food relief agencies are not able to meet demand. Over 80% of agencies reported not having enough food to meet potential demand. 5 in 10 agencies require at least 25% more food with almost 3 in 10 agencies requiring double the food.

Food is often the first step towards a longer term solution. Many agencies agree that food is a significant reason why people seek their services, and the provision of these services builds trust, enabling the agency to offer other services such as housing or education.

Foodbank SA is providing a valuable service to hunger relief agencies. Some 97% of agencies were satisfied in their evaluation of Foodbank SA’s service provision. However, there is more that Foodbank SA can do.

Port Adelaide Football Club got behind the End Hunger campaign in a major way in 2012:

+ they placed the campaign logo on the player’s guernseys;

+ hosted the campaign launch involving the Premier;

+ coordinated a citywide No Breakfast Friday fundraising event;

+ showcased the campaign at the game against Carlton; and

+ facilitated the Cans of Opportunity donation collection at the game.

The profile, energy and genuine commitment by the players to the campaign has resulted in tangible benefits enabling Foodbank SA to source, warehouse and distribute more food to our community.

The 2012 financial year was another busy and successful year with increases in the delivery of staple foods to those in need. Unfortunately the need continues to increase across South Australia and indeed Australia.

In 2012, Foodbank SA released its first national End Hunger Report which highlighted the increasing demand for emergency food relief.

During the year, the Board and Management undertook various actions to increase our professionalism, to improve our financial strength and implement actions to focus on greater marketing, fundraising and governance support to achieve our strategic objectives.

On behalf of the Board I thank all of the staff of Foodbank SA and our volunteers for the substantial efforts put in by them to the cause. They are a wonderful, talented and caring group of people.

Again we thank the Governor, Mr Kevin Scarce for his patronage and all of our donors and sponsors for their continued support, without which Foodbank SA could not exist.

In particular, the support for our work arising out of our new partnership with the Port Adelaide Football Club has been tremendous. We are committed to maximising the benefits for both Foodbank SA and the Port Adelaide Football Club arising from the partnership over the coming years.

The 2012 year continued the work of delivering food to over 600 community customers; including school breakfast programme operators, kitchens for the homeless, large and small welfare groups like Uniting Care, Anglicare, Salvation Army and St Vincent De Paul.

We strengthened our financial management with the employment of a financial manager, the introduction of a new computer system, and the Riverland Foodbank branch was completed.

Our first End Hunger Report points to an increase in the demand for food given the increasing costs in rent, utilities and groceries, with the working poor being the fastest growing cohort of people in need.

Our wonderful partnership with the Port Adelaide Football Club has built awareness of hunger in our community and the role that Foodbank SA plays in alleviating hunger. It has involved corporate partners in a new and exciting way and we are very grateful for their enormous effort in supporting and promoting this partnership.

We will continue to drive new food delivery projects with the goal of Ending Hunger by making nutritious food accessible and affordable for everyone. Surely an indicator that we live in a fair and just society.

I would like to thank the board for their ongoing efforts as well as all of our financial, food and pro-bono supporters without whose support Foodbank SA would not exist.

As a charity that supports over 600 charities, schools and other community services, and receives the support of so many donors, sponsors and volunteers, we believe this is essential.

The Foundation Programme – Sourcing of Key StaplesThese staple pantry foods provide immediate relief for those in need and underpins all of our work. Having a greater range of these foods in 2012 saw supply double from the previous year through targeted purchasing of required foods to complement food supplied through donations and collaborative supply initiatives.

Distribution Programmes

Our major distribution programme is to provide core staple foods to welfare and community groups that in turn deliver food to those in need. This is at the heart of our work and that which drives our endeavours.

“St Luke’s Church provides emergency food parcels to over 100 people per month. Many of these are socially disadvantaged, either transient, living in boarding houses or transient accommodation. We rely on Foodbank each week to provide a real service to those in need.” Shaun McGrath, St Luke’s Church

Support of Welfare and Community Groups

Children going to school hungry is not acceptable at Foodbank SA and this year saw us team up with Kickstart for Kids to start weekly deliveries of food to schools. Foodbank SA also partners with Red Cross to support food for their School Breakfast Programmes. In total we now support more than 100 schools with their SBP.

School Breakfast Programmes (SBP)

OBJECTIVE:

Lift distribution of fruit and vegetables to 1 million kilograms by 2016

An estimated 20 million kgs of fruit and vegetables are left in the ground or on the tree because the specification is not quite right or there is no market demand. We aim to capture as much as possible of this wonderful resource for delivery at the lowest possible cost. In 2012 distribution increased by 30% during the year.

Fruit and Vegetables

OBJECTIVE:

Continue dialogue with community leaders from country and indigenous areas to coordinate food distribution efforts on behalf of the needy in their communities

We have visited a number of indigenous communities and are developing ways for Foodbank SA to offer support to these communities over and above the food delivered to schools as part of our School Breakfast Programme deliveries. We are excited at the prospect of being part of community initiatives that create sustainable, low cost food security solutions.

OBJECTIVE:

Maintain our 10,000 Christmas Hampers annually

Foodbank SA continues to provide great value Christmas Hampers that brought Christmas cheer to more than 20,000 people (an estimated 12,000 children) at a time when they are most likely to feel the opposite, without hope, love or a sense of being cared for.
